General :: Using Samba To Share A Folder From A Guest With A Windows Host In VirtualBox

Mar 15, 2011

I would like to share a folder from a Linux Guest with a Windows host (with read and write access if possible) in VirtualBox. I read in these two links: here and here that it's possible to do this using Samba, but I am a little bit lost and need more information on how to proceed.

So far, I managed to set up two network adapters (one NAT and one host-only) and to install Samba on the Linux guest, but I have the following questions now: What do I need to type in samba.conf to share a folder from the Linux guest? (the tutorial provided in one of the links above only explains how to share home directories) Are there any Samba commands that I need to run on the guest to enable sharing? How do I make sure that these folders are only available to the host OS and not on the Internet? Once the Linux guest is setup, how do I access each of the individual shared folders from the Windows host? I read that I need to mount a drive on Windows to do this, but do I use Samba logins, or Linux logins, also do I use localhost? or do I need to set up an IP for this?

Is there anything that I should do different or anything that I should be aware of? Also, once this is set up, how do I transfer files between the two machines? General :: Copy Files From System To Machine To Share On Windows?

Jun 30, 2010

I need a command-line method of copying files from a Linux box to a Windows machine that is in a domain and requires authentication. I cannot install additional software or services on the Windows XP machine. I can install any software on the Linux machine. I've tried scp, but the connection failed and if my understanding is correct it is because scp requires that the target (windows machine) be running an ssh service. Is there a command-line linux utility that can pass Windows domain user and password and then copy a file from the linux machine to a share on the windows machine?

pretty comfortable at the command line and in kde. found 2 'supplementary kernel drivers' for virtualbox at slackbuild (thank you heinz!). followed the how-to at slackbuild and built and installed both packages, but additions weren't working. (i thought they were standalone) noticed the 'supplemental' in their description, and so installed the guest additions for linux from vbox site. additions still not working. at this point i start restarting my slackware vm, and redoing everything in various sequences. finally, additions work! but i'm not sure why! critical pieces and sequence for getting guest additions working once i have slackware installed?

Ubuntu Networking :: Way To Share Folder From Machine To Windows Machine

Aug 28, 2010

I am trying to establish the easiest way to share a folder from an Ubuntu machine to a Windows machine. In the past I have added things to smb.conf and that has all worked fine but what I am trying to do is to figure out what the "new user" way of doing this is so that when I am helping other people I know I am getting them to do the simplest thing.I completely removed samba and reinstalled it so that I didn't have any configuration. Right clicked on a folder and selected "Sharing Options" ticked the "Share this folder box" gave it a name and a comment and ticked the other two boxes.

When I went to the windows laptop then it kept asking for a username/password and nothing worked.Back on the ubuntu machine I did sudo smbpasswd -a [username] and created a blank password. Now from the windows machine I can access the shared folder. Is the smbpasswd step still required? It's very confusing for a new user as there is no suggestion that anything other than right clicking on the folder and choosing the options you want would be required. Is it something to do with the fact that this is an ubuntu machine that has gradually been upgraded through versions and this problem wouldn't have been there from a new install?

Slackware :: VirtualBox Guest On Win7 Host - Folder Sharing?

Jul 13, 2010

I have a Win7 laptop with the latest version of VirtualBox installed. It's a dual core proc with ram to spare. So, I installed Slack64-13.1 and it rocks! I'm really impressed that Slack is running at what appears to be native speed, but in virtual machine. Hardware response is normal, WIFI and LAN are both working great for my normal tasks. So, I downloaded a few much needed patches, and new ISO image for one of my old desktop PCs. Now, my problem is I can't connect my USB cdwriter to my virtual slackware or share folders in the Win7 install with the virtual slackware. I read a few of tutorials on the Oracle VBox website, and several of the ones here on LQ, and none of them seem to solve my problems.

Installation :: Use XEN Or VirtualBox To Host Windows 7 On It Or It On Windows 7?

May 17, 2010

Should I use XEN or VirtualBox to host linux on windows 7 or windows 7 on linux? Since I've read about the problems of reading/writing NTFS disks with linux usnig the Linux NTFS driver, I thought it would be better to host windows on linux. I think the problem is that you never can be sure if the linux NTFS driver is going to corrupt your disk because Microsoft does not publish the format for linux developers.

By running windows on linux, I could read and write EXT3 from windows. I think there are EXT3 drivers for windows. Then I got to thinking: If I am running Linux on Windows, am I going to be using SAMBA or the linux NTFS driver? I think I'm going to be using SAMBA to read and write the linux partitions -- correct? Are there other considerations when deciding to host linux on windows or windows on linux? I'm going to using both the linux and windows partitions for software development with java/eclipse and various databases including oracle.

Fedora :: Virtualbox Error 'Failed To Open Session For Virtual Machine Windows 7'

Jun 6, 2011

When i try to create a virtual machine using the Windows 7 Enterprise Evaluation iso file, everything goes as planned untill i click on the start button. when i click on it i get two error messages. the first: Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows 7. The virtual machine 'Windows 7' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1. Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908). The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. reinstall the kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. i have installed the DKMS package, but when i try to run the command stated in the error message, i get another error message in the terminal:

[code]...

i have to install the driver that is specified (vboxdrv) but i do not know where to find it.

Networking :: Can't Access Ubuntu Share From Windows 7 Machine / Resolve It?

Oct 8, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop right now. I have an external western digital terabyte drive plugged into it. I am able to see it and view it fine. Let's work with my music folder for example. I want to be able to access this music from my Windows 7 laptop so that I may add it to my itunes. However, when I enter the \servershare from the windows 7 laptop it says that the "server" is found but the "share" seems to be invalid. I've checked this 20 times and setting the share name to "music". I've rebooted 2 times on each computer yet to no avail. If I make a share on the Ubuntu desktop I can access it from the laptop. So it seems like it just gets lost when looking inside the external. This was just working last week, then I had to blow away they win 7 lappy and now it just won't work!
