CentOS 5 Server :: Installed CentOS 5.3 On A Machine, And Need A Samba Version 3.2 Or Higher?

Jul 8, 2009

I've installed CentOS 5.3 on a machine, and I need a Samba version 3.2 or higher. Since 3.4 is out, I thought I'd grab that. But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world

General :: Using Much Higher Kernel Version Than Installed Headers

Jul 18, 2010

Many here know I distribute alot of live stuff and thus many say I should try to putout as high a kernel version as possible for wireless, netbooks, etc.my questions are about using a much higher kernel version than the installed headers for instance; I use kernel 2.6.34-ZEN in my arch/slackware builds but the slackware version contains headers 2.6.33.4 from slackware and so is that a problem or no?I built the kernel from source using headers 2.6.33.4 in slackware and headers 2.6.34 in arch...now, I may be upgrading those kernels to meerkats 2.6.35-r5 and need to know if having headers 2.6.33.4 is an issue?also, after compiling kernel does it install a new set of headers when you do make modules_install?

CentOS 5 :: SAMBA Upgrade With Yum Not Finding The Latest Version?

Jun 14, 2010

I have CentOS 5.5 installed on my Dell D600. This release includes SAMBA 3.0.
Question: Is there a way to use yum to upgrade / install the latest version of SAMBA (3.5.3)?

A "yum search samba" shows there is only the "samba3x" release available - which is SAMBA 3.0

I've downloaded the SAMBA3-3.5.3-43.el5.i386.rpm package for Cent OS 5 from the SAMBA.org site, but when I try to install it, it fails due to package dependencies.

Short of downloading the source and compiling it myself, is there a better method to get the latest version of SAMBA installed on my system?

Neither yum update nor yum install seem to work with allow-downgrade. (It does not seem to do anything?). Does anyone have a working example for yum --allow-downgrade?

This is what I tried:
1) Show current yum version

I even tried setting access to the shared folder to 777 but still I can't open this share. Has anyone got any idea of why this is?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Installed Hplip Version 2.84 Or Later For An X86_64 System?

Aug 27, 2009

Maybe this should be asked on the hplip website somewhere but I will ask it here. I am running CentOS 5.3 x86_64. The latest rpm version of hplip which I can find, and which is installed, is 1.67 but I need at least version 2.84 of hplip for my printer, an OfficeJet j6480.

Has anyone installed hplip version 2.84 or later for an x86_64 system ? Do either the hplip-2.8.4.run or hplip-2.8.4.tar.gz installation methods install hplip 2.84 for an x86_64 system, as opposed to just an x86 system ? Has anyone produced on he web somewhere a 2.84 or later hplip rpm for x86_64 that I can use rather try to figure out how to do it myself ?

Fedora :: Installed CentOS 5 In Virtualbox But Can't Ping The Virtual Machine?

Mar 10, 2009

Running Fedora 10, I installed CentOS 5 in Virtualbox, but I can't ping the Virtual Machine...

From within CentOS, I can ping my laptop [known as the host?] but from the laptop I can't ping the CentOS Virtual Machine. I tried turning off the firewall on both too... CentOS was able to access the internet through my laptop right away without any configurations too.

Unless someone has an idea to resolve the above, I am also wondering about something else VirtualBox-related:

To see if it was possible to get around the above issue, I was going to install another CentOS virtual machine to see if I can get them to communicate both ways [if at all], but to do so, I think I have to install CentOS AGAIN on another allocated amount of hard disk space. This will take some time, so I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to just create a quick duplicate of the previous installation, if you wanted 2 different virtual installations of the same OS.

?CentOS 5 :: I386 Packages Installed On X86_64 Machine - Typical

Sep 26, 2009

When I installed CentOS on a 64 bit machine, I selected the 64 bit option. However, for some reason it installed many i386 packages - these were exact duplicates of installed x86_64 packages. Is this typical? How do I prevent this on future installs? If I left them installed, could this have caused a problem in the future? Due to my fastidious nature, I used yum extender to uncheck every duplicate i386 package and uninstalled them. This took some time. I am still not proficient with yum directly so I am wondering if there is a command to uninstall all i386 packages quickly.

CentOS 5 Server :: How To Upgrade Samba To PDC

Mar 25, 2009

I have a perfectly functional Samba file and print server. I will be adding several Window 2008 servers to serve as terminal server hosts running in virtual machines. I would like to convert my Samba server to a PDC (Primary Domain Controller) for these terminal servers to use. And leave everyone else as a work group (the current situation). I'd like to

1) use /etc/password and /etc/samba/smbpasswd as the source of the user accounts

2) limit what users the terminal servers can see based on a particular group (/etc/group)

So far I have tried the example howto's on the samba site and wound up having to restore /etc/nsswitch.conf in rescue mode.

CentOS 5 :: Samba Server Backup For 5?

Jul 9, 2009

I have re-installed our operating system (CentOS 5) ,what is the best way to restore our Samba server? Can it be as simple as copying the smb.config and smbpasswd files back into the /etc/samba directory? That's what I am hoping. If I just copy the smb.config and the smbpasswd files back to the samba directory will the machine trusts, users and passwords just work? If not, what is the proper procedure for restoring. Actually i want to make CentOS 5.3 as my Domain Controller, I want to test all Scenario in case of any disaster of DC before putting it into production environment. I have some queries as:

1. Is CentOS 5 is more stable than RHEL 5 etc.

2. How can i take back up of entire samba server if need it in case of any disaster. How can i restore it.

3. How can i use logon scripts like GPO in windows servers.

4. How can add users in samba server and linux at one time with one command.

5. tell me any Web based samba administration tool other than SWAT.
