I also have a Canon LBP2900 printer which is compatible with Linux, and I can use it with the proprietary driver if connected directly to my computer. As the NAS doesn't have this proprietary driver, it doesn't detect the printer as such when plugged in. How can I install this driver on the NAS?

View 1 Replies View RelatedFor years I have used a Slax live CD on a laptop to clone internal HDDs to USB HDDs. I recently purchased a Sony VPCF136FM laptop with Intel Core i7 CPU. It apparently has USB 3.0 ports. The problem is the USB ports are dead with Slax. There is a USB devise driver available for Windows 7 from Sony but nothing for Linux operating systems. Can this driver be ported to Linux? It is an exacutable (XXX.exe). The chip for the USB Host is from Renesas Electronics (no help there, either). Where can I find a device driver to use with Slax and how would I install it?

It's plugged into my router, but i don't know how to find the dang thing from my laptop.I got a configuration sheet printed out with tcp/ip settings, but it's all greek to me.I had it set up on another computer and was able to print from my laptop, but i don't want to turn on the desktop and have to login everytime.

Everything is working fine now. However, something that confused me is that whenever I tried to ping the printer _before_ I got it working, it would fail with a _different_ IP address. That is, the command 'ping x.y.z.3' would fail with a message saying it was unable to contact 'x.y.z.2'
Now I am looking at my router - for something unrelated - and I've noticed that rogue IP address shows up in the list of connected devices. It has a MAC address but for the device name it lists "<unknown>". Should I be concerned about this? how to figure out what this device is?
Linux and I have trying to get my Fedora 15 (x86 64bit) on my laptop to print to an Epson Stylus NX515 printer/scanner. I have the printer connected to a router through a wireless connection. I have other computers that are on the network that are Windows based and they of course are printing/Scanning just fine. The printer is located in a different room. I have been searching for a solution but non that explains how to install a printer driver for one that is connected to a router wirelessly.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Centos 5.3 server with Samba file shares and a shared Samba printer. I am not running a domain.
I recently changed my windows desktop pc from an XP machine to a vista 64 machine... It has a different user name. Everything went pretty smoothly - and the and the vista machine found the smba printer - and even downloaded the driver from the samba server. he printer works OK - and the file shares are fine.
The only thing which is quite odd - is that the Printer Properties dialogue takes more than 30 seconds to come up - and every action you attempt with the dialogue takes a similar amount of time.
I will include below the essence of my smb.conf:

A MySQL or similar database is preferred, but flat file is okay as long as it does not limit content/structure too much.We would probably have about 15 to 20 content authors/editors. No workflow, authentication (except authors/editors) or secure content areas are required.
The only limitation would be that the content could only be accessed from a particular range of IPs. (I assume that would be set in Apache.)
I have Bind on the machine at present, but I was wondering how much disk would be needed to make it a full DNS server that could act in place of a dead upstream service.

According to various sources, this should mean that applications have priority over file chaches, and swap should only be used when the applications themselves need more memory than is physically available. So I naively took the value free provides in the '-/+ buffers/cache' line as 'free' as the amount of memory to be available on the server. Unfortunately this is not even close to true: On a server with 20GB RAM, memory utilization by this measure never reached 50%, yet the system swaps.
I then figured out that I could use 'sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches' to drop cached stuff. I was very surprised to still have 12.5 GB cached data after doing that. I am figuring that it's those 12.5 GB which force the system to start swapping. I also tried to use /proc/meminfo to figure out how that cached memory is used (by comparing its content before and after dropping caches). However, I don't see the correlation between the numbers provided there and what part of the cache can be dropped.
The closest match seems to be the 'Mapped' line, which was 10GB. I am pretty sure that being mmapped keeps the kernel from dropping cache. However, the value is 2.5 GB less than the cache which can't be dropped. So it is not the whole answer. What I am looking for is some way to determine how much memory the kernel could provide by dropping stuff if he needs to because of memory pressure. Is there maybe a way to simulate drop_caches without actually doing so?
The amount of potentially available memory does not have to be scientifically correct, but the number should at least be always in the right ballpark, which right now, it ain't... The point here is that it's a productive system. Sy doing stuff like dropping caches or filling memory until the system starts to swap is not a permanent solution to figure out the value. By the way, it turned out that postgres was the culprit in this concrete case, stopping it made dropping all caches possible, but that does not answer the general question of how to estimate available memory...
1. Is my assumption correct that I can subtract 'Mapped' from the freeable cache memory completely?
2. Where could the other 2.5 GB be used?
3. Is there a way to get a better guess of how much memory the system can free if necessary, before swap has to be used?

I retrieved the driver from the lexmark site, to be specific the debian version. Once I had the driver unzipped I was able to run the program to start installing it. However the problem is that it requires root privileges in order to install. So I input my admin password to allow the install. Apparently the password I use is not correct even though it is the admin/root password on my system.
