Everything is working fine now. However, something that confused me is that whenever I tried to ping the printer _before_ I got it working, it would fail with a _different_ IP address. That is, the command 'ping x.y.z.3' would fail with a message saying it was unable to contact 'x.y.z.2'
Now I am looking at my router - for something unrelated - and I've noticed that rogue IP address shows up in the list of connected devices. It has a MAC address but for the device name it lists "<unknown>". Should I be concerned about this? how to figure out what this device is?

Next I installed hp laser jet 2500 l that works great now if I go to use my hp p1006 it does print at all it says it is but nothing happens, the other HP printer works great.

When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. I am looking for a way to setup a Proxy Server on my Tomato-based router to use from a remote machine somewhere in the web cloud.The reason for wanting to set this up follows. I normally run Squid on a Ubuntu 8.04 box, which I use while I am away from my LAN at home to browse the net (I like to keep things between me and my ISP, as much as possible . I rely on my proxy server on a daily basis. The way it works is I SSH into my Ubuntu box, and forward squid ports. I then point my browser to the proxy on my box. For various reason, however, I would like to set it up so that I can also do this via my router. So, I would like to be able to ssh to my router (I can already do this), forward the proxy ports, and surf the nets happily via my router at home. I am happy to use existing solutions (if possible), such as privoxy or squid, and am also open to setting up a custom-based solution, as may be necessary.

"You are not the owner so you cannot change these permissions". The folder's icon on my desktop has a red box with white circle on the middle right side and a lock symbol above that. I'm the only user so I don't get why the permissions are protected from me, how do i undo this?
I'm reasonably new to Linux and very new to Ubuntu . I've just installed 9.10 as a dual boot on a Windows XP Pro Dell Inspiron 9200. I have a Samsung CLP-315 that I need to configure first as a local printer then as a wireless network printer. I found the software (.bin file) on the Samsung site and downloaded it but that's as far as I got. Can I use any of the GUI package managers or do I need to use Terminal and command line syntax? Here's the real question "what is the syntax for installing software/drivers?"

Ive found the drivers for my printer (Cannon MP 210) but i have no idea what to do with the files. The file for the scanner is a .tgz file, and the printer driver is a .tar file. When i connected my printer a few minutes ago, ubuntu 10.10 brought me to the installation and i installed and older printers driver (mp 180) but the scanner wont work and a bit of excess ink is on the test paper.
