I wish to update the drivers for a printer which is being shared using samba - can I just upload the new drivers and overwrite the old or do I need to delete the old drivers before uploading the new ones

I have installed Canon ImageRunner 2018i on my linux box using CUPS web interface. When I try to install this as a network printer from a Windows XP machine, the windows XP machine keeps asking me for a device driver. Is there a way to configure the printer on CUPS/Samba so that when I try to install it on Windows XP machine as a network printer, it does not ask me for a device driver?

After much work, I got a PPD file for a Dell printer working - albeit not the exact one I need (5330dn), but close enough to work (3100cn). Question: when I look at the list of printers in CUPS, I see a bunch of extra printers that are on the network, but that I didn't add. How do I remove them (ie. I don't want them to be listed)?Going to Administration | Manage Printers shows me a black button named "Delete Printer", but clicking on it gives me an error message of:

(2) anyone have the .ppd file for the Dell M5330dn printer? I've spent 90 minutes on the phone w/ the Dell tech support, and those guys are clueless....
(3) I have 4 printers of the same model. the first is working - is there an easy (command line) way of adding the other printers? Ie. can I just copy the /etc/cups/ppd file 3 times, renaming it to my other printer names (and ip addresses)?
we are having new printers. At the moment we over 1000 machines on multiple sites but no print server they are manually added on the machine ( I know don't ask).
Anyway there is no way they would let use a windows server so the only option I have is to use linux however I little unsure if it is capable of doing the job I need it to do. Basically I want to add the printers on the linux server either using samba or ipp (I would assume samba would be best).
The reason i want to do this is when we have to do around the machines I just want to go around the machines and just the map the printer and it brings down the driver and config etc as we want them to duplex. The issue is I been trying to gain information on the internet and getting conflicting information apparently I can add the windows driver onto the server so when I map the printer it brings it down. However some guides state you still have through the whole process of adding the printer and then choosing the driver etc. Which kinda of makes it pointless to do the printer server since I would already have to do this anyway if we don't have one.
I just want to go be able to go around the machines and for example click star run and do something like \192.168.1.1printer01 and then it done kind of thing.

5 windows XP machines one Windows Server 2003 machine, PDC of the old domain One debian Samba PDC (of TEST domain)/print server (with CUPS installeD) running in a virtual machine hosted by the windows server One Toshiba eStudio 3511 printer
Using the CUPS control panel, I've been able to autodetect and add the printer, and it appears as an available share in SWAT for samba. However, the driver isn't perfect. CUPS could only supply drivers for the 3510c, not the 3511.
However, clients on the TEST domain are unable to access it. Doing so gives an error about a local policy preventing a connection to the print queue. I've tried googling this error and the fix that comes up in every result about changing a point and print policy setting, does not work.
however, I've been able to work around the issue. by first logging in as local administrator, navigating to the domain server, then inputting the domain root account credentials at the prompt. That allows me to attempt to connect to printers, but with a different error
"The server for the printer does not have the correct driver installed...."
I very strongly suspect that the 3510 driver actually will work, but it's just not being shared properly. The printer driver share folder is /var/lib/samba/printers, and that directory contains only a few empty subfolders. CUPS did not place the driver there as I would expect, and that is where clients are looking for it.
The thing is, I have no idea where CUPS DID put the driver.
On the old domain, the printer uses drivers for es4511, and looking on the toshiba site, this seems to be what they provide. The Toshiba Site provides a huge variety of drivers, including several windows ones, a universal driver, and a CUPS PPD. Cups asks for an optional PPD during install and I tried supplying that. It said installed successfully, but didn't change anything.
I've tried pasting the windows drivers into /var/lib/samba/printers/W32X86 too, and likewise with other drivers from toshiba's site. but this doesn't change anything either, so I'm at a bit of a loss.

THe yast test page comes out but nothing is printed from open office.I opened port 661 UDP in the firewall but still no result comes from open office.I then added the printer in cups but i still have an error and no print : ( cups-1.4.4-2.3.i586 )

Ok have setup my printer under suse 11.3 just fine and printing perfectly, and have added the printer to a windows 7 client, but had to get the disk to install the windows driver. Is there any way that i can put the windows driver on the linux machine so that when i go to a windows client and want to add the printer, i can just connect to the printer and the windows driver will be installed over the network like it does with windows servers?
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter struggling with a bad LP cable I have finally proven that the cable, printer and port all work. I booted in to another OS and was able to finally print. Now, I'm trying to get server 10.4 to recognize the printer and then I want to configure CUPs so I can run this machine as a headless print server, among other things.
Apache is running as I managed to get nagios to run and I can pull it up from another PC via a browser.
sshd is running as I'm logged in from another PC via ssh.
Problem number 1 is how do I install a driver for an NEC Superscript 870 printer? As it is lpstat returnes with :

Once I am able to print then I need to print to the server from other hosts on the network.
I need to know is there any way to record or tracking or make logging if when user samba delete files or folders i can know that, cause sometimeon samba server some users complain they lost files, though i have daily backup and i can restore their files, i just want to know if or maybe some other users in one group accidentally move or delete the files.

I would like to setup Samba so that I can just access that server (Samba printer server) and both network printers will show up on there for me to connect to. On that note, can I also load the drivers on my Samba server? Drivers for different Windows flavours and also Mac OSX drivers.

I recently changed my windows desktop pc from an XP machine to a vista 64 machine... It has a different user name. Everything went pretty smoothly - and the and the vista machine found the smba printer - and even downloaded the driver from the samba server. he printer works OK - and the file shares are fine.
The only thing which is quite odd - is that the Printer Properties dialogue takes more than 30 seconds to come up - and every action you attempt with the dialogue takes a similar amount of time.

I'm having a problem trying to set up my HP OfficeJet 6310 printer with Fedora 12. This is with a clean install, SELinux disabled and Seems to be some issue specific to Fedora, as I've used the same setup with the same hardware without problems in other distributions. I have installed all the HP files I believe should be installed. Anyway, my printer is on my wireless network. I can see the printer on the network, as is the case with my other computers.
I followed the standard setup I use with any other distro....open a terminal and enter "hp-setup." The HP Setup utility opens and I go through the standard procedure of choosing /Network/Ethernet" as my means of connecting. Moving on, the HP OfficeJet 6310 is found without a problem. When I attempt to "Add Printer," however, I am then getting an error. The error shows, "Printer Queue Setup Failed. Restart CUPS and try again." Looking at [URL], I get to CUPS but can get nothing there so far as a printer goes.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been at this mess pardon my french for a few hours and i'm still going nowhere, original thread posted over at archlinux forums:Since my printer isn't visible on my server (works just fine on my client) I tried to manually add various URI (tried em all) and I went from "printer location not found, waiting for jobs, to printer isnt running".
In my opinion it should be working but it's not, i've read the linux printer database/various linux forums/#cups on freenode (idled for 2 days no response)/gentoo wiki/forums and the old tool "google" but most of the "hacks" I tried didn't work.There's a lot of google links with issues similars to my own and alas they are all unresolved, is this a typical problem with unix/CUPS over servers/network?Why is it so difficult for CUPS to detect my printer over my server?
Is it possible to use CUPs to share an already networked printer using IPP? The printer itself uses IPP.I know at first look this may seem like a silly thing to do, however I have a special case to set up a "print proxy server" due to security compliance reasons
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to install a new printer I can't get the samba to show under the network printer list. I even tried the "localhost" method & it still doesn't show. Samba is running fine & I can navigate to my shares. Even running the printer config. in the terminal result in no errors & no list.
Anyone have any ideas? This is the first I've encountered this... not even to sure what to google.
This post is for an HP parallel printer but I think it should work for at least "some" other parallel printers.I am sure that someone smarter than me will follow up this post with a "well, just do this and that" and you will have your HP Laserjet 6P printer ready to go, but since questions litter the forums of MANY distros on how to get "at least" an HP parallel printer to work, I'll post this anyway.This may or may not work for you if you do not have an HP but you can try it.The install printer box will let you do an install for an HP Parallel and it asks for how it is to talk to it, through CUPS sock or "local host'. When we get through what I recommend you should chose "local host".

I am probably going to get blasted for this statement which is a result of four days of frustration.There are many people on here who are having problems getting their printers to work with Ubuntu. In my case it is version 10:04. I have been reading and trying fixes for four days. Nothing works.Surely this has got to the attention of the people who know what they are doing and design these programs. I sure don't know how to fix this, along with a lot of other users. We are not being lazy or arrogant. Nothing seems to work.Surely someone in the hierarchy can put in a patch that fixes this problem.The fact that Ubuntu won't print for so many people surely must be a priority inhe development of this software. So, please will one of the program developers fix this problem and send out a patch.

I have the server set up and the printer added and have gone through all of the steps the tutorials suggest to get the printer to be viewed on the network (set it to shared, allow other machines to view shared printers, etc). However, I can't find this printer on any of the other machine on my LAN (one machine running mac os x the other running Ubuntu 10.10).
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy setup is like this: i have a small office network and i bought yesterday a new multifunctional printer Samsung SCX-4521F. It is shared with samba and connected to the server with USB. In the network everyhing works well, users can log on to the domain, print from windows to the new shared Samsung printer and i even managed to enable network scannin. But when i try to print from MS DOS i wont get a single page. We have an accounting program in dos. All the other computers are XP Pro SP3. My server is running for 2 weeks the newest CentOS with all updates. I'v maped the network printer in windows witht the command "net use LPT1 \ServerSCX-4521F. I get a message that maping was completed succesfully. If i start a print job nothing happens. "Printing" or "warming up" flashes several times on the printer and thats it.

I have found that there are certain things on the web that I need to print, that simply refuse to work under linux. I have a samba printer server on one of my Slackware boxes and an M$ XP vm under Vbox that can access the server and see the printer. The only problem that I have is that it expects to download a driver from the server which isn't available and the HP driver installer won't install if it doesn't detect the printer. Short of relocating the printer to install the driver, does anyone know how to get the driver installed on the XP host? This is so much easier with my Slack boxes and CUPS!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been able (with some hair pulling and gnashing of teeth) to print from outside the LAN to the printer connected via USB to the desktop computer at home, until the last upgrade. The laptop will forst say the printer may not be connected, but eventually (usually) after a while says the job was sent to the printer. The log files on the desktop - serving as the printer server have an error message in cups/error_log that I am not familiar with, and don't believe I have seen before. I am sure if I could decipher that error and figure out how to change the behavior to get rid of it, it would once again work. Printing from within the LAN is a no-brainer as it has been for the last several releases. The error that I get when trying to print outside the LAN (via the internet) is:
cupsdAcceptClient: 12 from <WAN IP>:631 (IPv4) Unable to encrypt connection from <WAN IP> - GnuTLS internal error. I am missing something as far as authentication from the laptop to the desktop. how to fix it.

Here's my problem:I have a foomatic hpijs cups-driver for a HP Inkjet (Non-PS printer) installed. Printing from UNIX-hosts works. I have cups configured not to allow raw-printing (/etc/cups/mime.types: #application/octet-stream, /etc/cups/mime.convs: #application/octet-stream).I have now installed samba-printing, the cups PS-drivers plus the Windows PS-drivers are populated to /etc/samba/drivers/W32X86/ and get pushed to the WIN-Client.Problem is that when I print from a WINXP client, the printer outputs heaps of Postscript-text instead of my page.I have tried to debug this a bit but fail to find anything really useful. My observations so far:
- The samba-pushed HP_Photosmart_3300.ppd (in both /etc/samba/drivers/... and in the resulting dir on the WINXP client) reads:
