I have Bind on the machine at present, but I was wondering how much disk would be needed to make it a full DNS server that could act in place of a dead upstream service.
View 3 RepliesFirstly I've never (successfully) upgraded before using update manager -d but I've only tried once. I'm on 10.10 at the moment but I want to make a full disk backup using Acronis and try out 11.04 beta 1 so if I can't boot (like with the 11.04 Alpha 3) I'm ok.
What I want to know is if I upgrade to beta 1 it will install new things and settings, if beta 2 is released and I upgrade to that (after having beta 1 installed) will it overwrite all the settings again? Or will I be able to spend time set beta 1 up nice how I want it (if it works) and just smoothly upgrade gradually to final 11.04 keeping it pretty much exactly how I want it?
Also with the software sources, I understand I need to disable the ones I manually added before updating from 10.10 then to re-enable them, but how do I re-enable them for Natty as they are currently for Maverick? Do I just change the word Maverick to Natty, or is it better to remove and re-add them for natty? And do the authentication keys need updating or are they ok? I don't really know a lot about the keys.
1 more thing (sorry) will an upgrade overwrite any settings I have e.g. etc/fstab, sudoers, things like that? I know when you upgrade it gives you an option for some things e.g. keep or replace, if I keep old settings from maverick does it matter? Or does 11.04 add new lines/things to these files if I choose replace?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm pretty new been using ubuntu as my only OS for couple months now and most of my time has been spent tweaking settings and I don't want to lose them, or do a clean install when 11.04 final is released as I won't ever be able to remember them all.
So i just installed ubuntu server 8.04. Got everything set up and started putting my files on it. 6 Hours of copying later I get a message saying that my Disk is full. This is a 1.5TB HD and it stopped copying at 269GB. fdisk shows the drive as 1.5TB, and ls -sh shows that only 269GB have been used. Yet I cannot add any more files. The other weird thing is that df doesn't show the hard drive, yet I know it is mounted and accessible. If it makes a difference I have it formatted to ext3.

For our workgroup I set up a server which is basically 10.04.2 with kernel 2.6.32-32-server on a SSD and all the data on a RAID 5 consisting of 4 2TB hard disks, thus a maximum of 6TB space for data on the RAID. Having multiple users with different amounts of data from different scientific data source I set up an lvm on top of the RAID

Here is the problem: The volume Genomes (or /genomes) is half full
sudo df -ah
/dev/mapper/home--data-Genomes
1,9T 850G 920G 49% /genomes
but the system states it as full whenever I try to add more data (tried cp and rsync). There is no quota set to the volume (I have quotas in place for users home folders. These are only for max amount of disk space, not max file number, and I am still able to move/add files elsewhere so there seems to be no interference).
How much resources are needed to run a mail server with approximately 75 boxes?

I try 'rm' various log files but the space I free up lasts less than a minute before the disk reports as being full once more.

There's nothing enormous in /var/log and my trash and the root trash are empty.
why size and used fields are not the same despite 100% usage being reported on sda1..
I have a total of 4 hdd's, 500gb 7.2rpm that I would like mirrored using raid 10. As you can see from the image, ubuntu 9.10 server isn't recognizing the full 2tb's. In fact, I'm not even sure about the configuration as I was thinking the HDD's would come up as four 500gb hdds. Instead I have the configuration above set and ready for Ubuntu to be installed on.
1. Is this typical of a server pre-configured from Dell(perc6 raid controller.
2.Why is ubuntu not recognizing the full capacity of the drives especially when it's a server install?

The LDFLAGS specifies the library path, which is specified as -L$(PROJECTPATH)/myproject/libs/liburl/ When I check this directory on my machine I see that the file: liburi.so.1 is indeed there.
I am thinking about setting up a local Debian Repository mirror. I want it to mirror just the Debian Repo at [URL].. Anyone have any idea how much disk space I might need to do it?

I have to get a complete backup (partitions, MBR, all data files) of my server without bringing it down to do it. I want to have a backup that, in the event of a system failure of any sort, I can quickly restore onto a new, bare hard disk and have the system back up and running. The windows equivalent of this would be something like Drive Image XML, this is the functionality I am looking for.

I have just one gripe about running Hardy on this VPS: PHP 5.2 is horribly outdated!! It has 5.2.4 in the repos, whilst 5.2.14 was released a while ago. As an LTS server distro you would expect these kinds of packages to be updated to ensure security? Please don't tell me I can use Dotdeb, it was never meant for Ubuntu and I have had problems with it in the past.

I have it set up with a static local IP, and I've configured DynDNS to link up with my router and allow my server to go live to the internet. I have all the appropriate ports unlocked, with the exception of port 80. This port is blocked by my ISP (Charter) and I can't use it. Due to this, I configured my router to listen on port 81, and direct it to my server.
So, In order to view it, you need to go to the IP XXX.xxx.XXX.xxx:81 Today, I registered (www.online-self.com) in hopes of getting around my current mask (provided by DynDNS.com (omegame.selfip.com). So here is my dilemma, When I go to the host of my domain name , I want to redirect my DNS to my server IP.
I can't seem to do it though? They want a strict IP address, no port extensions. How do I get around this so that my domain name and IP address link up? I'm thinking I may be missing a step, or maybe I needed to register a domain name that simply redirects? I'm starting to get confused on what I should do next. Can I even do this?
For the last couple of days I've been building on a server built from an old (well, not too old) computer. My goal is to use it for multiple purposes like a webserver, home automation, and possibly a future media center (if I get my TV card to work). But perhaps the main reason is to get wireless access to the internet for my laptop, and to connect it to my other (stationary) computer. When I'm done I'm also planning on writing a guide for setting up an access point with the rt61 chipset, as there seems to be many people looking for this. First I just need to get through this problem though .
For this I use two wired NICs, eth0 for the local interface to my computer, and eth1 as an external interface for the internet. Moreover I use a wireless NIC (DWL-G510 using the rt61pci driver) in conjunction with the daemon hostapd to provide a wireless interface for portable computers to connect to. eth1 gets its IP through DHCP from my ISP, while eth0 and wlan0 have static IPs on two different subnets like this (copied from /etc/network/interfaces):

I'm setting up an ubunutu server (tomcat, mysql etc) which has been going very smoothly I must say. I plan to do manual updates over ssh using "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get upgrade" but I believe sometimes these update will need a complete machine: how can I tell if I need to reboot the server after an update _using the command line_?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got a new Ubuntu 10.04 server install with a new 3 disk RAID 5. The boot disk is separate, not part of the RAID. I was trying to practice what I would do if a disk died to recover the RAID, so I unplugged one of the three disks. The machine now just hangs on startup. It shows fsck at the top of the screen but doesn't got anywhere from there. If you press a key it shows the Ubuntu splash screen. If I plug the disk back in, everything boots up normally. So, my question is, how do I get the machine to boot with one of the RAID members missing? I know I can recover it using the Live CD, but it would be nice to be able to get back into the machine without the CD.

(I have tried a bunch of other ips too and none outside its network are pingable) I'm not sure if this is a problem with my server or a problem with the networking outside the server. I have been emailing my server provider and they keep on insisting the problem is with the server and that their network is working fine. Apparently all of their other servers work and they can login into the gateway and ping 8.8.8.8 from there. So they just want to reinstall the OS, but I thought I'd post here to see if anyone has any ideas.
Here is some info I have gained while troubleshooting: I haven't changed any settings at all on the server for months. I haven't done any updates for about a week. The strangest thing is that this is intermittent, there have been a few times in the last 24 hours where I have been able to ping 8.8.8.8 or other ips, but 98% of the time I can't. I have also tried rebooting the server, which had no effect. I can ping the gateway, and I can ping other servers on the same subnet. I can ssh onto the server from my home internet connection, and I can view webpages on apache, so incoming connections work.
I just recently made a server using Fedora 10 and i was wondering if it is possible to set it up so that i don't need a GPU for fedora to boot properly. Since the GPU isn't being used i was hoping to save on a little bit more electricity.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI run a website that a very steady flow of traffic and Im seeing recent issues that I just dont like. Server is 10.04.2 on a supermicro i7-950/6gb RAM with two 500gb Samsung F3 drives in a software RAID1 (1x5400, 1x7200) and for several weeks, its been running very well. Recently, Im seeing the server hang for 5-20 seconds. IOwait goes through the roof, nothing can write to the disk. Apache logs stop, redis fails to rebuild caches, mysql errors and then it continues and moves back to normal operation
/ is ext4, the kernel was 2.6.32-server-x64 but since updating to 2.6.38-server-x64, the issue has dropped from maybe once per 10 minutes to once per 15 minutes. 3 IOstat copy/pastes show this when it hangs.

i'm having issues in trying to copy files from one hard drive to another. The destination disk is not full yet I get the message "Error creating directory: No space left on device".

Then "not permission" (I was the root then).
So, sudo /etc/init.d/iptables.cf start
Then, "command not found".

A File Server with accounts. That when you try to access the file server in explorer you need to provide a username and password.And that you( as the administrator) manage the privileges for the server/folder/file. so with different permissions.
