I tried to enable Compiz on my netbook, so I installed ccsm. Then when I enabled visual effects and restarted, my netbooks monitor starts flashing when I boot up. So I restarted in low graphics mode, uninstalled ccsm, and it's still flashing. Is there anything else I need to remove to get my netbooks monitor back to normal?b
View 1 RepliesMy computer keeps having some kind of meltdown. i really cant explain it other than the screen will go black, and then it will start flashing like white bars, or different colored bars. this happens at such random times i cant exactly pinpoint what sets it off.
the only thing i may have a clue to is that in my update manager, there is one thing that is a distribution update that i cant check to have it installed or anything like that. its then "Gij" and its description is it is "the gnu java bytecode interpreter" i just dont know if i should just go back to an earlier form of ubuntu because these problems didnt start happening until i upgraded to the new ubuntu
After succesfully installing Ubuntu 10.4 x32 and rebooting pc hangs on black screen with a flashing white dot in the top left corner of my screen, i've tried installing it twice with the same results.
my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

was trying to get rid of the ubuntu menu and try to change how the desktop looks. It's hard to explain but it was first the desktop you get when you first start up ubuntu on NetbookThen I somehow turned in into a desktop esque menu. With all the icons and stuff. Today my battery accidentally fell out as I moved it around and when I restarted my computer all went fine until the screen started flashing. On the upper right hand corner, was a transparent square with 2 arrows when it flashes. It still showed that I connected to my wireless and etc.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed the slack 13 in an old Toshiba Qosmio F10, and everything was ok...but then,like 2 or 3 days after,I got a display problem at boot time: the screen is flashing, in vertical lines,so I read 2 letters,and then the next 2 are flashing. And it can't boot. 'Loading the kernel' is the last message.
I tried booting from the slack cd, the huge.s, but I got the same.
The strange is that if I use an old (very old) live cd, Kurumim 4.0, a dead Debian-based Brazilian live-cd, it boots. And then I have the vertical lines in graphic mode, but the notebook works.
I think that this is a hardware problem, but since it works with an old debian livecd,I suppose it should also be bootable with Slack.
EDITED: Ok,I tried Ubuntu and it couldn't boot,but eith the 'grapfical safe mode' it booted.
Since I can't believe that even Ubuntu would boot, but not the Slack, I tried

Recently, whenever I restart my computer, I am automatically logged in and a rapid sequence of flashes repeats itself over and over. First a white screeen appears. Then my desktop background appears, dimmed and overlaid with the netbook-launcher's up and down arrows in the upper lefthand corner. Then my desktop background appears in full color, with my panel above it but no launcher. Rinse wash repeat. I assume it has something to do with Compiz. When escape to a tty and type "compiz --display :0--replace &" the loop ends and everything works. Any ideas how to avoid having to do this every time I restart
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64) and every time I boot i get a flashing screen. I didn't have any problems at all with the LiveCD. The graphics card and my wireless adapter worked out of the box. But after the install it won't work. I can choose the OS in GRUB and then there's a purple screen. After that the screen starts flashing and I can hear the login sound.
I have tried using "nomodeset" but that didn't work either. There is no flashing, just a purple screen all the time. But it was possible to enter tty. I also tried booting the Recovery Mode but it just loads and then a pink flashing screen appears.
The graphics card is a XFX Radeon HD6870 1GB.
Once I installed it I've been having a problem where the screen flashes black for a split second. i looked up the problem and found this:I navigated to the directory it said, but I don't have an "options" file. What should I do? Are there any other fixes for this? It's quite an irritating problem.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently wiped and partitioned my hard drive on my Sony Vaio Z series laptop. I set up the NTFS partition for windows, the Ext-4 partition for Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix, and a large NTFS partition for my all my media. I installed the netbook remix off of a flash drive, and I couldn't have asked for a smoother install. Everything went fine, and I proceeding to install google chrome and all the other little goodies. After that, I configured all my settings and ran the update manager to get everything just fine. After a reboot, I became frustrated and prevented maximus from running on start up because I did not want every windows I opened to be maximized. After a reboot, the screen would flash very brightly more than once per second. I could see the top bar with the processes and such as well as the correct background, but I cannot do anything because the screen will not stop flashing. I figured out I could stop it from flashing by pressing ctrl+alt+F7, but the screen just freezes where it is at and is still unusable. Desperate to start enjoying my Ubuntu Netbook Remix, I wiped the Ubuntu partition and reinstalled and did everything EXACTLY the same except instead of preventing maximus from opening, I used gconf-editor to change the setting to not maximize everything by default. Reboot, exact same problem.
I've searched everywhere for a solution, but I only find people with vague similarities or explanations. Could it possibly be a graphics problem? My laptop has 2 graphics cards in it - an Intel integrated one and an nVidia one. The nVidia one has a hardware issue so I just use the Intel one for now. It is also worth noting that I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 (desktop) on my machine before and I never had any such problem.
Also, I tried booting up in the "safe mode" equivalent, but I eventually encounter a black screen and I am forced to hold down the power button to shut it down.
(also, if it's worth anything, I know how to use windows well if there's any way I can change something in Ubuntu from my windows installation)
when I install them all goes well but when I get into the GUIs I can hardly press anything - major bug with mouse and it is really annoying. Secondly there is a big gap between the GUI and my screen's edge. Hmm, I think - it must be a problem with the GPU driver and that might be the thing also messing with the mouse clicks. I download the drivers provided by the Ubuntu community - all goes well and I restart - stuck at purple screen after the "moving dots" on boot. So I reinstall the whole OS and try with the drivers provided by NVIDIA - same thing. I try the same procedure with Kubuntu and no progress.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook to my sisters laptop (Dell Latitude C640) but there appears to be a problem with the screen going black then opening the primary window, then loading the sidebar and then going black again.
For example, I'll hover over the new bar on the left and it'll just disappear, the screen will go black then will suddenly come to life again and then disappear, go black and so on. It just cycles through that.
I installed Ubuntu 32-bit v. 10.10 on a Dell Optiplex GX270, after installation i had to reboot, but then when rebooting it just goes to a black screen with a flashing
View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning 10.04 as the only OS on a HP desktop - been running fine for months. Did an update - probably hadn't done one for a couple of months - may be a red herring. The system appeared to crash while inactive. Trying to boot - I get the Ubuntu 10.04 screen for a short while then it goes to blank screen with a flashing cursor at the top - occasionally it will give me an error that /home is not ready - skip or manual fix. I have sda1 = ext4 root
sda2 = swap
sda3 = ext4 home
sdb1 = ntfs
I removed sdb1 from fstab as initially it was complaining about this drive not being ready. The error switched to complaining about /home. I am able to mount both of those filesystems with no problem manually. I ran mke3fs on /home (I forgot the -n parameter! but no problem as I have good backups) - same error - complains about /home not being available at boot even though I can always manually mount it from live cd or manual recovery. I can rebuild this system - and I may as it was upgraded from 9.10 - I may do a fresh 10.04, but I would like to fix the boot problem in case something like this happens again when I actually care about fixing it.I recreated the grub2 configs - I don't have the command to hand, something like: sudo update-grub --root-directory=/mnt/boot/grub /dev/sda
i've installed 11.04 on an intel classmate nl1 netbook (atom n270, gma950 graphics, 1gb ram) but have a problem with flash when i visit a specific website. i don't have any other general problems with flash. e.g. videos works perfectly. the problem is a white box flashing on the flashplayer screen. i installed adobe flash 10.3.181.5 and have tried flashaid. if i select low quality in flashplayer then the problem is much less, but it doesn't go completely. i never had this problem before with windows xp when visiting this site on the same netbook.
i asked the website customer services and this was their reply! "no we have not tested the program on ubuntu personally i have never heard of it before. our it suggested downloading google chrome and using that as your internet browser as that is the recommended browser." changing the browser makes no difference. i tested firefox, seamonkey and chrome. could there be some driver issue with the graphics card?

Long time linux user, first time with centOS
I am building a basic firewall system with ssh acces only, I only occasionally need gui/gnome access so I have sent my init level to init 3 in /etc/inittab.
My problem is during startup the screen wants to run the gui startup and for some reason the driver isn't quite right so it flashes the screen every time it starts a process and says [OK] because of this I miss 90% of the startup information.
I have already disabled the splash screen in /boot/grub/grub.conf and that did disable the grub splash screen but how can I disable the "centOS" spash stuff? I only want txt at startup, I don't want the system to do anything graphical until I type startx.

After upgrading and rebooting, the flashing login screen appears and it is not possible to use the GDM.
I have tried to install KDM and it works, but when trying to load gnome I get the blinking bars again.
I have also tried this (and got the same problem); installing the Nvidia driver (manufacturer), installing the Nvidia driver (repositories) and installing no screen driver.
I think the problem is with GNOME, and not with the graphics card.
Now I have installed windows xp :-/, for the first time in a whole year, cause it is not possible for me to use Ubuntu 9.10 at all.
I've been trying to get this working for a while. On a remote server I'm running irssi in a screen session to keep my IRC client connected 24/7. I SSH to that server and reattach the screen session. irssi is able to send alerts when certain highlight words are mentioned (e.g. my nick). I would like gnome-terminal to flash in the taskbar when that happens. I was able to get this working with Putty on Windows, but I can't figure out how to get that working with gnome-terminal. Is it at all possible? The "Terminal bell" setting in the gnome-terminal profile doesn't seem to change anything.

When I turn my PC on GRUB comes up and I can select ubuntu or vista, vista works but when I try to boot ubuntu the screen goes black with a small flashing underscore in the top left and then just goes completely black, nothing else happens after this. I've tried reinstalling from the live cd but when I go install nothing happens and the screen goes black again. When I was installing I changed the boot to something like scsi?

I downloaded ISO image from official web, Then I burn it on blank CD-R using lowest speed available from Nero 6, After that I go to BIOS and change that CD-ROM will boot first; Done. After that i reboot with CD-R, and it boots! Yea!, I press "Install Ubuntu", it goes to black screen with flashing Ubuntu logo at middle of it, After 1-2 minutes i turns black, ouch!, I press "Enter", and there is a error message, something like this...

i am trying to instal kubuntu 9.10 on my desktop. i have an ati radeon hd 4600 with a hdmi cable going into the 22" lcd. The problem is i cant view the whole desktop, like i can only see a part of the corner, and all of the icons are massize. The search bar at the bottom comes to half my screen size, making installation impossible to see. Plus i can only use live cd mode using safe graphics mode. i am new to linux finding this quite confusing.

Wanted to move to years ago favourite (linux based systems), I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 for i386 and am trying to install both using CD as well as USB. After the Ubuntu start-up menu for installation, I select install Ubuntu option, turn off 'quiet' so that I can see what happens. The screen goes blank dark with a flashing cursor at the top.
In the kernel messages, the see that it has detected the processor, set the clock, assigned the PS/2 keyboard to input3 and then says:
[1.911624] isapnp: no plug and play device found
After this, the system hangs. Keyboard doesn't work.
I have just recently installed Linux Lime along with windows 7 Home Premium. Before, there would be a menu asking me which operating system I would like to use. When I click linux it goes to linux and windows 7 goes to windows 7. Now when I click Linux, the black screen you get at the beginning shows a - (dash) constantly flashing on a black screen and won't boot to linux. This is normal as it does that for a second then boots. Now its stuck on that flashing dash on a black screen and won't boot.

I installed Ubuntu on it yesterday because i was fed up of windows vista. On windows Vista i use to Plug the laptop into a 50" LG plasma and watch online movies and sports. And for the audio i used a USB cable from the laptop into a Pioneer VSA-AX10Ai Amp. My issue is.I plugged the VGA cable in today to test it on Ubuntu. I went into apps/sys/display and all of a sudden the laptop screen just kept flashing on and off. the Tv was saying in the top left 32" and because of all the flashing i could not do anything so i just turned the laptop off. I have not attempted the Audio Via USB yet . I know vista and my IMAC auto picked up the AMP but not on UBUNTU can anyone help me with the Screen issue ??????
