Once I installed it I've been having a problem where the screen flashes black for a split second. i looked up the problem and found this:I navigated to the directory it said, but I don't have an "options" file. What should I do? Are there any other fixes for this? It's quite an irritating problem.
View 1 RepliesAfter succesfully installing Ubuntu 10.4 x32 and rebooting pc hangs on black screen with a flashing white dot in the top left corner of my screen, i've tried installing it twice with the same results.
my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

I have just wiped my whole hard drive to install a fresh copy of Ubuntu on it, and now as soon as i power it up it passes the POST screen and black screen shows up with a flashing cursor. I bliv it should say no operating system and pick the USB which has Ubuntu installation on it.I have formated the hard drive to NTFS, the system is Samsung NC10.

It has a Pentium III (550 MHz) processor, 192 MB RAM, 8 MB graphics memory, 20 GB HDD with a monitor supporting 1024x768 resolution. The problem is, after the booting is complete a blank flashing screen appears with a cross-shaped cursor in the middle. I continues and nothing happens. I tried with solutions like editing the entries with 'live xdriver=fbdev', 'live xdriver=none', and 'live vga=771'.

Installed some things, moved music over, etc. (Dual booting with windows vista btw) So I install my graphics card driver, (ATI Radeon HD 3200) and I reboot. When I open the bootloader (I think thats what it is), It starts to boot, then just has a black screen with the flashing underscore. I can type and stuff but nothing happens.

I have just recently installed Linux Lime along with windows 7 Home Premium. Before, there would be a menu asking me which operating system I would like to use. When I click linux it goes to linux and windows 7 goes to windows 7. Now when I click Linux, the black screen you get at the beginning shows a - (dash) constantly flashing on a black screen and won't boot to linux. This is normal as it does that for a second then boots. Now its stuck on that flashing dash on a black screen and won't boot.

I did try booting to a LiveUSB in order to run update-grub, but then it occured I have no idea how to do this from a LiveUSB that will affect the internal HDD installation?
So I'm currently trying to reboot from Live USB, but that just seems to have locked up the PC on the white ubuntu logo. I'm afraid to hard reset it (been doing too much of that lately). How long should a Live USB take to shutdown? (been about 10 minutes so far ). It's not a persistent LiveUSB as far as I know, and I basically just booted to the desktop and then start the reboot cycle as soon as I realised I didn't know what I wanted to do .
I deleted both the partition with archlinux and the swap in order expand the windows xp partition. I am now unable to boot, just as gparted warned me. When I turn my computer on, it just goes to a black screen with a flashing underscore.
I cannot type anything, but cntrl-alt-dlt does restart. I have been attempting to restore grub and/or windows's boot method for the last 24hrs. The main things I've tried were the instructions here and using super grub disk. However, I have not been successful. I am running an Ubuntu live disk. At the moment, I just want to be able to run windows, but do not have an xp disk because this laptop was issued from my old college.
After installing Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS, I restarted my machine. I removed the disk, but now when it starts, it never gets to GRUB. Instead, it just takes me to a black screen with a blinking cursor. I can't type in anything and holding shift doesn't take me to GRUB.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy computer keeps having some kind of meltdown. i really cant explain it other than the screen will go black, and then it will start flashing like white bars, or different colored bars. this happens at such random times i cant exactly pinpoint what sets it off.
the only thing i may have a clue to is that in my update manager, there is one thing that is a distribution update that i cant check to have it installed or anything like that. its then "Gij" and its description is it is "the gnu java bytecode interpreter" i just dont know if i should just go back to an earlier form of ubuntu because these problems didnt start happening until i upgraded to the new ubuntu
I have installed F12 on the remaining space on my disk and now Windows does not boot anymore. I get to Grub and choose windows and then just get black screen with flashing cursor.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an old machine running Ubuntu 9.10 and XP.t is a P4 and Nvidia FX5200 card.Yesterday all of a sudden the screen started flashing black, the same type as when you install new graphics drivers and the resolution is changing. Only here it keeps happening over and over, the mouse isn't usable fully, the icons and menus are distorted, and I basically can't do anything.
I ended up reinstalling 9.10 and everything was working fine until I installed EnvyNG to get my nVidia drivers. It required a restart, and once I logged in the same thing started happening. So I said screw this, and installed 8.04. Yet even in 8.04, once I used EnvyNG to install the drivers, the same thing happened.A few other detailsP works fine, although one time a similar thing happened on XP (not as bad), and was fixed with a reboot.- This PC runs through a KVM switch, but I connected it directly and the same thing happens.I've found no help via Google. Sounds like a possible hardware problem, but it seems to work fine in XP and only acts up in Ubuntu once I install drivers.
i thought i would give ubuntu 10.04 a try. So i downloaded the iso twice from two differant sources and burned to 2 diff dvd with diff burners and get the same problem. When i boot off of the disk i get the menu but whether i choose install are run live cd it just sits there for a sec are 2 then goes to black screen with flashing white bar in upper left hand corner and thats all it does. even tried my 9.10 disc which i know works. but it does the exact same. I have purchased a new video card since i last ran ubuntu and its the nvidia gtx 260 core 216. would that be whats causing my problems?

And when I start up my computer, Windows Vista is an option in the Grub menu. But when I use the grub loader to load Vista all I see is a black screen, with a flashing underscore character (it looks a lot like a terminal screen, waiting for input). The screen just stays like this, too - I timed it once, and 13 minutes later it was the same.

Could it be something I had installed? Also, whilst using it, on the third install, a few times a message appeared telling me there was a kernel error, could this be linked to the problem? I was running Fedora in GNOME, but I had KDE installed too.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 using Wubi. Everything works well, but randomly while I am working my screen will go black and say out of range or no signal. My monitor is a Planar, I have resolution and refresh rate set at factory specs and most of the time it is clear and working well. It seems to be completely random, sometimes it happens while surfing the web, other times I am using gimp, and sometimes I am not near the PC at all. I assume the problem is also the reason I can not use Compiz as well. (Graphics card is a intel 845).

There seems to be no way to enter the graphical linux environment. I was forced to wipe the hard drive clean twice because of this and both times I reinstalled lucid lynx.

I'm not an expert, but I've used Ubuntu for several years, and I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything stupid... Here's what happens when I boot with the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD: I get a purple screen with just an accessibility(?) symbol at the bottom (this lasts 15 seconds). The screen goes black, with a flashing cursor, then changes back to purple, this time with an Ubuntu logo, with 5 dots acting as a progress indicator (this lasts about 1 minute). The screen switches to standby. The CD drive continues to make noises for another minute or so, then stops.
I physically removed my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5770), and plugged the monitor straight into the VGA port on the motherboard. Now the CD boots up fine. I could try installing Ubuntu at this point, while my graphics card is unplugged, and then plug my graphics card back in, and see if it starts working then.
I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 and I have this annoying issue. it does happen very often, but enough to be a problem (atleast once a day or more).While I'm browsing the web (not really doing much of anything else) the screen goes black with some text. View 3 Replies View Relatedthis is my first time doing a custom partition, I tried to do it with only the assistance of reading as I go, but I don't believe I found enough information last night. What I am trying to do, is put openSUSE on 200gb out of 500gb space on my external hard drive, as well as on 50gb space out of 110gb on my internal hard drive. The remaining 60gb space on my internal drive is going to be for microsoft windows. The remaining 300gb space on my external drive will be storage space. It seems like what I want to do is achievable
What I want is to have my main openSUSE on the external drive (primary partition I think?), with the GRUB loader so that when the external drive is not plugged in, my little brother can use windows on my internal hard drive. I tried this last night, and when installation had finished, I rebooted my computer and the screen was just blank black with the flashing white line as if waiting for me to type, although it would not allow me to type when I tried. It would be great if someone could tell me the order in which to partition, including the terms primary partition, extended partition, and logical partition, as needed.. I don't want to permanently muck up this machine.

At random intervals the video output is turned off for 2 - 3 seconds giving a black screen. (I suspect the 2 - 3 second blank time is how long it takes the monitor to recover after a loss of input signal.) The interval between events can vary from 1 minute to an hour to more than a week, and recently more than a month. Sometimes I get several per hour; other times not for two weeks. Hmm, there was a kernel update in the last week or so.At one time the cause was pointed at a USB driver problem since a number of USB log entries occurred at the same time as the screen blanking. That is not the case here;here is nothing in </var/log/messages> (or the dmesg output) that is anywhere near when a screen event happens.
Got a new Lenovo T500, slapped 9.10 on it. Set of programmes is exactly as on my previous IBM T42, but every so often I get a random crash. No errors, just a complete freeze with a "underscore" cursor in the top-left of the screen.I think / suspect it may have something to do with Transmission running, or perhaps the recent kernel update to 2.6.31-17.Anyone else had anything similar? Maybe on a T400 or R60 / R61 / T60 / T61?

I installed a video driver and after restarting I got as far as the login screen where I saw that the driver did not work: screen is mostly black with random bars of color. I was only able to restart in recovery mode mode. I tried the fix graphics option, which did not work and also some commands that I've seen posted in other threads. So far, still cannot delete the problematic driver or boot up normally successfully.

A couple of times during installation the screen flashed black and diplayed a message for a brief second. I can't read that fast but it says something like "DRM nouveau- unknown or unsupported chipset" and one more line that I can't catch. When this happens, I see the pre-login loading screen, the one that shows an icon of a hard drive, network, and so on as each resource is secured. I can log back in, but this starts a new session- it doesn't remember what I was doing. I had to redo the install and setup several times because of this.
I can log in and so on normally, but the black screen and message will appear at random, forcing me to start all over, which is really frustrating. what's going on? Is it the video card? How do I install a driver for it? Also, the hard drive in question has been through a lot. could it have a bad sector or something? Windows didn't even want to "see" it, that's why Fedora is installed on there.
I have ubuntu on my desktop - works great. The problem is I am trying to install it on my laptop. I have the image burned, and it's booting off my cd rom just fine. The problem comes after that. It goes to the ubuntu loading screen for a pretty long time, then after that the screen scrambles in random black and white box type things, at which point I get no response unless I hit the power button at which point a linux screen pops up and tells me it's waiting for programs to close, then boots down.

I have notice this since the early Fedora 12, but the frequency increases lately.I have turned off the KMS, KDE power management, and screen saver, but it did not help. I have radeon 3450.
