When something happens in firefox, the window is flashing in the taskbar, and if the window is on another desktop, then it appears in the current desktop taskbar. I would like to avoid this. I tried a way to change this flashing behavior, or to remove completly taskbar flashing whitout success.
View 1 RepliesOn boot into new 11.04 32bit system, the desktop background came up and nothing else, no panel no icons. Right clicking brings up the dialog box for create folder change background, etc. but it is flashing on and off, after a bit of effort used it to change the background, but still no panel and same thing with further mouse clicks! This was a semi-clean install from a LiveCD with download updates checked and a separate /home partition.

This happens with both aMSN and pidgin. So as far i am aware its not a problem specific to the application.
I'm using lib notify for now so I don't miss incoming messages all together.
Im running compiz with extra visual effects.
I just ran memtest86 on my pc to check for any bad ram for a problem i was having and when i restarted ubuntu after the splash screen loads i just have two panels (top and bottom) and they flash rapidly. i can't seem to do anything except ctrl alt del and restart.
i kept trying to press esc to enter safe mode but it keeps bringing me to the splash screen and ubuntu loads up.
i'm currently using a knoppix cd to type this msg.
My wallpaper, regardless of what is chosen, flashes to blue/green (like an old Win95 desktop color) every 10-15 seconds. It stays that way for a second, then goes back to what is set. Also, it seems to 'fade in' to the blue/green, then fades back to the chosen wallpaper (albeit a very fast fade). Icons on the desktop are unaffected.I've tried disabling all desktop effects, and it still does it. The only way to stop it is to reboot, which seems to fix the problem for 24 hours or so, then it starts again.

After upgrading and rebooting, the flashing login screen appears and it is not possible to use the GDM.
I have tried to install KDM and it works, but when trying to load gnome I get the blinking bars again.
I have also tried this (and got the same problem); installing the Nvidia driver (manufacturer), installing the Nvidia driver (repositories) and installing no screen driver.
I think the problem is with GNOME, and not with the graphics card.
Now I have installed windows xp :-/, for the first time in a whole year, cause it is not possible for me to use Ubuntu 9.10 at all.
i am trying to instal kubuntu 9.10 on my desktop. i have an ati radeon hd 4600 with a hdmi cable going into the 22" lcd. The problem is i cant view the whole desktop, like i can only see a part of the corner, and all of the icons are massize. The search bar at the bottom comes to half my screen size, making installation impossible to see. Plus i can only use live cd mode using safe graphics mode. i am new to linux finding this quite confusing.

View 3 Replies View RelatedUpgraded from Karmic to Lucid (no clean install so to speak). Changed the visual effects to normal, but I somehow can't move a window to my 2nd desktop.
Changed the window manager from Compiz to metacity using the compiz fusion icon, but no result.
Since I installed Lucid I have found that when I drag a window to the top of the screen in KDE, unless I do so very carefully and gently, it maximises and fills the screen. How do I stop this pointless and annoying behaviour?

But how do you get rid of it permanently? What if I just want to have a normally functioning desktop with icons like Ubuntu or Windows, but I like the look of the Kubunu theme and such? I want all those ever present, weird windows to go away, and for the desktop to function normally like you would think a desktop should. With icons, and a lower taskbar. That weird thing is kinda getting on my nerves.

This causes untold frustration since I flip amongst numerous computers with Windows windows and other levels of UBUNTU windows. is there some way to configure where the window close button is (some way to put it back in the upper right corner)?

The tragicomic chain of events which leads to the question is as follows. Community group, short of cash, want to equip lecture room. Pull-down screen is set up permanently on one wall. Contractor sets up old data projector via ceiling mount. Data projector is just too far away from wall, such that image cannot be reduced sufficiently by the data projector to fit on the screen.
Annoyingly the image, as displayed, is only slightly too large - just enough to lose the top and bottom panels, Applications menu, File Menu on full-size windows, Indicator applet, Trash, and restore desktop button. The data projector is hooked up via VGA cable to a recycled PC running Ubuntu 10.04 with proprietary NVidia driver (version 173) for GeForce 8400 GS. I'll give anything to be able to do this on the PC, rather than having to move the projector!
when i move a window around on my desktop its splited up into two where the bottom half sluggishly follows the top half i.e. the top half of the window is leading as i move the window around the desktop rather than moving around smoothly(i.e. moving the say vlc around without the window splitting[moving it around as one]. this issue also persist in fire fox where when i scroll down a web page, the page is split in two where one half of the webpage overlaps the other dependant whether i scroll up or down.

View 3 Replies View RelatedLet's say I have a program open on another virtual desktop. Is there a way I can bring that program to the current desktop through a script? The following command is the closest I can get:
wmctrl -a program This will switch to the desktop where the program is open and make it the foremost window. However, instead of going to the desktop where the program is, I want to bring the program to the current desktop. There is also this command:
wmctrl -R program The documentation says that this will do what I want, but it just does the same thing as the former command.
i have just done something silly. I have Xubuntu installed and i opened Window Desktop Tweak i think and stupidly i enabled Composting and slid all the sliders the wrong way and now i cant see any of my windows .
What do i do or how can i correct this as i cant see anything ?
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
The issue is that Gnome will not "remember" the size and location of the window in which an app was last run. For example - I run Disk Usage Analyzer and stretch the window to be the full height of the screen and about half the width of the screen and move it to the far left of the desktop. I then close the app. The next time I run it the app comes up in a "default" window size, not the size I last used, positioned randomly on the desktop.
p.s. I should add that some apps seem to remember their prior window size/position. For example OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Nautilus.
Since I have upgraded to to 10.10, I've noticed that I can no longer drag programs to another desktop. Somehow this setting must have been disabled. How does one reactive this setting? (I'm guessing its Compiz related...)

I've been looking for a similar way to accomplish this in (KDE) Kubuntu. I know that you can right-click on a window in the Task Manager and use "To Desktop" to move a window, but I'm just curious if the same thing can be accomplished with the keyboard.

I am running a 800x480 desktop with Gnome, many windows are cut off at the bottom and I cannot click on the buttons. The standard reply to this problem seems to be hold alt and left click drag the window up.
That works just fine, the twist here is I'm accessing the desktop through a touch-screen (via vnc on an android phone) and I don't have an alt button to hold, dragging is also kind of tough.. I realize it may just be the limitations of my device, but it can't hurt to ask!

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is a new, two days since release 11.2 install on a freshly formatted drive. I lost the KDE 4.3 default semitransparent Desktop Window with all the desktop folders. I believe what happened was when the mouse went across this window, the window side pop out with the X at the bottom appeared, the mouse pointer continued onto the "old style" desktop far away from this pop out and I clicked on blank "old style" desktop. This window appears to have treated this as selecting the X in the pop out, which I probably went over without clicking on my way past it and this window is gone. I have changed to "folder view" since I can't figure out how to restore this window for the "default desktop view".
How do you restore the semitransparent default Desktop Window when its no longer in its own "view"? The jury is still out on the obviously improved, but still not ready for prime-time KDE 4.3. I feel like a Microsoft OS user being forced into using a "new" burdensome/buggy interface I don't want or need at all. Even the KDE 4.3 manual admits some things (only some?) will not work as expected. The KDE 3.5 interface did everything I "needed" quickly and without problems. I've already had enough abuse from MS, please stop emulating them.

View 1 Replies View Relatedwhen using desktop effects windows seem to get stuck in mid-animation and produce ghost windows which will disappear and go back to normal if i click on a blank area of the desktop.Its not a huge problem, everything else works really well and the issue goes away when i turn the desktop effects off. was wondering if anyone else has seen this?? I am running SLI on quad nvidia gpus so maybe this is a driver issue??
