I just ran memtest86 on my pc to check for any bad ram for a problem i was having and when i restarted ubuntu after the splash screen loads i just have two panels (top and bottom) and they flash rapidly. i can't seem to do anything except ctrl alt del and restart.
i kept trying to press esc to enter safe mode but it keeps bringing me to the splash screen and ubuntu loads up.
i'm currently using a knoppix cd to type this msg.
I'm having this problem with Ubuntu 9.10, it has happened the three times I have tried to install it.

After upgrading and rebooting, the flashing login screen appears and it is not possible to use the GDM.
I have tried to install KDM and it works, but when trying to load gnome I get the blinking bars again.
I have also tried this (and got the same problem); installing the Nvidia driver (manufacturer), installing the Nvidia driver (repositories) and installing no screen driver.
I think the problem is with GNOME, and not with the graphics card.
Now I have installed windows xp :-/, for the first time in a whole year, cause it is not possible for me to use Ubuntu 9.10 at all.
when I get into the login page, I can only see the background and the login box in the middle of the page just turns whole white and keeps flashing. no response for any clicks. I was force to ctrl+alt+F1 to switch to init 1 to do my work. But I still want to use my graphical desktop either KDE or Gnome is ok. I am using gnome.
View 5 Replies View RelatedRecently, whenever I restart my computer, I am automatically logged in and a rapid sequence of flashes repeats itself over and over. First a white screeen appears. Then my desktop background appears, dimmed and overlaid with the netbook-launcher's up and down arrows in the upper lefthand corner. Then my desktop background appears in full color, with my panel above it but no launcher. Rinse wash repeat. I assume it has something to do with Compiz. When escape to a tty and type "compiz --display :0--replace &" the loop ends and everything works. Any ideas how to avoid having to do this every time I restart
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed 11.04 on a machine. After installing did the reboot and logged in. The only thing I see is the background. After I wait a few I see, what I believe to be, a dialog box to finish setup but it will only appear on screen for a fraction of a second then disappear, then about 2 seconds later it will flash again. It continues to do this with out stop. When I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del twice, I am able to, for only a moment but long enough to click shutdown, see the shutdown options before it disappears and a couple of seconds later it pops back up and disappears again. It continues to do this.
What could be causing this? I have tried other things I found on this forum, but they did not work.
When something happens in firefox, the window is flashing in the taskbar, and if the window is on another desktop, then it appears in the current desktop taskbar. I would like to avoid this. I tried a way to change this flashing behavior, or to remove completly taskbar flashing whitout success.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy wallpaper, regardless of what is chosen, flashes to blue/green (like an old Win95 desktop color) every 10-15 seconds. It stays that way for a second, then goes back to what is set. Also, it seems to 'fade in' to the blue/green, then fades back to the chosen wallpaper (albeit a very fast fade). Icons on the desktop are unaffected.I've tried disabling all desktop effects, and it still does it. The only way to stop it is to reboot, which seems to fix the problem for 24 hours or so, then it starts again.

Right clicking brings up the dialog box for create folder change background, etc. but it is flashing on and off, after a bit of effort used it to change the background, but still no panel and same thing with further mouse clicks! This was a semi-clean install from a LiveCD with download updates checked and a separate /home partition.

The problem is i cant view the whole desktop, like i can only see a part of the corner, and all of the icons are massize. The search bar at the bottom comes to half my screen size, making installation impossible to see. Plus i can only use live cd mode using safe graphics mode. i am new to linux finding this quite confusing.

I'm doing diskless booting of RedHat 5.1 on this machine but I'm hoping the problem isn't related to that, and just something simple. The OS loads, and I get to the login screen (not noticing anything about kernel panics during boot), but the keyboard doesn't work and the three lights flash. It's not a GUI login screen, so I don't know if the mouse would work.

I have set up a server running ubuntu desktop, and I'm able to logon through remote desktop (win 7). The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. Is there some setting I have missed to be able to see the same from any computer (logon through remote desktop).

Today when I logged in as normal, instead of taking me to the desktop I get a white console on the top left corner with the normal login background. I typed 'sudo X' but it says the server is already active for display 0. Please advise what I can do. I am reasonablyew to Linux so apologies if this has been discussed before (but I couldn't find any info here or on google).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm new to Ubuntu, so new that in fact that this is my first install of the Operating System. I'm currently using Ubuntu 11.04. At login screen, the bottom bar is present, but after I log in it disappears and all I'm left with is just the mouse cursor and the desktop background. This happens for both the Ubuntu and Ubuntu Classic choices. But both top and bottom bars are present when I choose the Ubuntu Classic (No Effects) and Ubuntu (Safe Mode) options. Is there a reason that this keeps happening? A bad install? Hardware can't support the new version of Ubuntu?

I have observed if I wait about 5 minutes my screen saver will kick in. My setting is for 5 minutes. Once I cancel the screen saver Iḿ back to the mouse indicator circling continuously. At that point all I am able to do is restart and try again. I cannot login as a user using a web interface or client. Using the correct password, it takes a long time, then tells me that the login may be incorrect. With an incorrect password, it tells me this immediately.
I am able to login to the web admin interface, but the "System" tab will generate the following error after several minutes. code...
Just recently I noticed that I suddenly couldn't open any folders, just getting a message in my bar saying it was opening the folder, then it'd immediately close. I also could not right click on my desktop. I removed and then reinstalled Nautilus, then reboot, but now my problem has worsened.
I can no longer select a session type at the login screen, and after logging in I just get a small terminal window in the top left of my screen while the rest is the background for the gnome login screen.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10, and is the only OS installed on my system. Yesterday, my desktop stopped working - no right-click function / display of icons. My wallpaper was still intact. The last thing I did was pressed ALT + F2 and executed "gksudo nautilus". This fixed my desktop for the time being, but wasn't showing the correct icons/wallpaper.The real problem started when I restarted. I get the normal login screen, and when I enter my info, it just restarts back to the login screen. I know I am entering the correct information, my caps lock isn't on etc. If I enter my password incorrectly it doesn't reload, it just acts normal and says the pw was wrong. Only when I enter my info correctly does it go to a black screen really quick, then come back to the boot screen.
I am at work right now, but will be checking this thread again later tonight. Please help, I am locked out of my computer which I desperately need to log in to!
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 TLS from a pen-drive (running Ubuntu example). I created a new user account. When I lock desktop it correctly turnout the screen (everything go dark). When I move the mouse Ubuntu returns perfectly. My problem is that in any time I am not asked for password. I want that Ubuntu while locking ask for password to login again. I already tried configuring lock down and lock properties (application) via gconf-editor.

I can type all that in, and get into the system, but it's still in the command line. If I type startx, it will then load the GUI desktop just fine. Is there any particular reason it wont' boot straight into a GUI login screen?
I originally had Ubuntu dual booted with Windows 7, and was having this problem. When I installed Ubuntu fresh on an external hdd, the issue went away. However, I recently formatted the hdd and re-installed Ubuntu and now it's doing this again.
My ubuntu 10.10 desktop environment freezes at right after login, with the window prompt to "unlock keyring" in the foreground. The cursor still can be moved around the screen with the touchpad or mouse. Mouseover of Docky elicits the usual animation but there is no response to clicking it. There is no other response elicited from moving the mouse over or clicking anything else on the screen, including the taskbar and the hot corners i have set up. However the screen still goes dim and to sleep when left unattended and can be reawoken. The netbook also still recognises when it is plugged into a power source.
Background info: I have been dual booting windows 7 starter and ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition for about 2 months now on my ASUS eeepc1005pe netbook with no issues till now. The problem only started when i booted up into windows 7 starter without having shut down ubuntu completely. My netbook was hibernating when i mistakenly chose to boot into win 7 starter at the bootloader. Now this freeze happens every single time i try to boot into ubuntu. But i am still able to boot into win 7 starter without any problems.
The same sequence of events occurs each time i try to start ubuntu. The boot goes fine, then the automatic login occurs, then compiz loads fine then my desktop environment appears with all the same windows and programs open on the desktop as the last time i had managed to use ubuntu except that the keyring login prompt appears in the foreground and then everything freezes as i have described.
