Hardware :: Can't Find Mobo Board On Market Except Server Taking 8 Sticks?
May 18, 2010
I have a Phenom II X4 955 box running 8G RAM. Now I'm planning building a Phenom II X6 box running 16G RAM. But the 4G module/stick is very expensive, not easy to find. However most mobo can take max 4 sticks. I can't find mobo board on market except server taking 8 sticks.

Somehow Fedora 12 does not find one of my Sata drives (Seagate Barracuda 500GB) on the motherboard (Asus P5Q pro). The drive is attached to SATA_E1, which is a Silicon Image Serial ATA RAID connector. The drive currently has Windows Vista 64-bit OS which has been working fine. Fedora install loads correctly without errors, but only shows my RAID system on SATA ports 1-6.
WHAT I HAVE TRIED:
I have tried showing RAID as IDE in the BIOS, and setting it to compatible mode. Still does not detect.
I have tried setting the drives to ACPI mode in BIOS. No effect.
OTHER INFO:
I'm installing the x86_64 version of Fedora 12. I have run the Debian i686 installer and it picks up this volume without issue.

I'm trying to get sound to work on an embedded board. The boot says ALSA is present and sound chip is present. So I try to open the device with:
The hardware manufacturer assures me the device is hw:0,0 so I set device to:
This gives me:
So I'm presuming the advice that I use hw:0,0 must be wrong? So I need to find a way of working out what the device id is. I've tried default, no effect, then tried the command asoundconf list, which returns an error. I'm using a min linux build on an embedded system (busybox) so is there a way to find my sound device.

I have a 'Rackable Systems' server with an HDAMA mobo - Dual CPU Opteron 250 2.4GHz with 2x memory modules per CPU. It seems to run fine, but it hangs every hour or so! I am running Ubuntu 64-bot 10.10, which is currently a beta release so I haven't discounted that as the problem yet, but suspect it unlikely. However, I am downloading 10.04 as I type...dmesg spits out lots of awful messages like these:
[ 1314.920127] EDAC MC1: CE - no information available: amd64_edacError Overflow
[ 1315.920047] Northbridge Error, node 0, core: 0
[ 1315.920060] ECC/ChipKill ECC error.
[ 1315.920066] EDAC amd64 MC0: CE ERROR_ADDRESS= 0x1484410
[ 1315.920082] EDAC MC0: CE page 0x1484, offset 0x410, grain 0, syndrome 0x11c1, row 0, channel 0, label "": amd64_edac
(there are variations on the node, core, address, offset an syndrome etc.)I have tried swapping CPUs over and running with only CPU.I have also swapped all the memory around in almost every permutation.Another worrying symptom is that when I run memtest86+ from a boot disk, it shows zero errors up until the point where the server turns itself off without warning - it hasn't yet completed the test...

The find command is taking too long on my machine to complete. When I use time command, I find that sys time and user time are too small as compared to real time. Is my find process not getting scheduled properly?
I interrupted the neverending find command and got the following statistics:
Real time : 5min
Sys time : 1.1 sec
User time : 3 sec
I was running
find / -name ls 2>/dev/null

I have a server running ESXi. I want to know if it supports AMD-V for hardware-based virtualization. Is there any way to check it from one of the guest os running (centos 5).
Also, I tried rebooting the box and I can't see an option in the bios to turn on/off Virtualization. Although from Asus site they say it supports is:
[URL]
The motherboard is an ASUS KFN4-DRE and has 2 Dual Opteron 2216 2.4GHz processors.
Also, on a side note, I have another box with HDAMA board and 2 Dual Opteron 275s. Do these support AMD-V as well? No option in bios as well.

Anyone know of of an automated stock market end of day quote retriever? Ideally this software would be a service that automatically updated a MySQL Database of stock quotes for EOD data (probably from Yahoo).

I got a new-old notebook from ebay, a sony vaio vgn-tt11. it is working really great with slackware and I can recommend it to everyone whose thinkpad got stolen ;-)I am trying to optimize everything I can and one thing is bothering me although I might be wrong about this. "top" is showing X server taking between 4-7% of the cpu even when I am not doing anything (no apps with running in the background). I remember that x server on the thinkpad did use much less cpu. but I checked that on thinkpad at least two years ago.
4-7% is (not) much and I would like to hear whether your X server is taking any cpu power and how much. do you have any ideas how to improve this or is this something I have to live with? I am using vanilla slackware 13.1, gnome slackbuild and kernel 2.6.38. I tried playing with Xorg.conf but it did not help at all. I activated "composite" extension through xorg.conf but nothing changed.
Code:

I tried to install Ubuntu Server on an Alix2d2 board: [URL]It has a CF card connected with an IDE interface and no vga output. The processor is a AMD Geode. I'm aware that I need a 386 kernel as described in the german wiki:
[URL]
What I did so far:
Installed imedia linux PCengines Alix build [URL] on an other Ubuntu machine with usb cf interface. This worked but I don't know how I can install Ubuntu from imedia linux.
Installed Ubuntu Server on the same Ubuntu machine. Installed the 386 kernel and changed the grub config file to enable the serial output to a terminal and updated grub[URL]. I created the file /etc/init/ttyS0.conf that the serial interface still works after the bootloader [URL].Unfortunately the alix board writes only "GRUB loading." and some empty lines.
Tried to boot with Tftpd32.exe by Ph. Jounin following this guide: [URL] So I set up a TFPT server following this german wiki: [URL]As advised changed /etc/inetd.conf and /etc/default/tftpd-hpa, prepared the boot image and the DHCP server. This should be enough on the server. I have to write N over the serial port to the board while it performs memory test to enable PXE boot. This was partly successful: it gets an IP adress but afterwards nothing happens. I can't find any error message in the syslog.
I attached my configuration files. As boot image I used [URL] and used the following commands to bring it into the right place:
Code:
sudo tar -xvzf netboot.tar.gz -C /var/lib/tftpboot/
sudo chown -R nobody:nogroup /var/lib/tftpboot
installing Ubuntu Server with PXE or from the other machine to the CF card or even directly from imedia linux.

I run an ISP with various servers such as mail servers.Once something works I let it run forever. Thus I have a mail server running FC5 on a Mach Speed pm400 via chip set motherboard.Recently the motherboard died, and I had to use a back up board to get it going again.I am now out of back up boards and need to purchase a new set for the future. However the mail server software will not activate the IDE DMA on these newer boards because the chip set drivers are not in the last kernel package that yum would download for FC5.
1.) Is there an easy fix to this problem to get the DMA working?
2.) Do I have to download and compile a latest kernel (2.6.x) to get the right drivers?
3.) Since FC5 is fully modularized, is there an easy way to create a similar kernel from a download without having to manually turn all the modules on?
4.) CAn I simply use the original .config from my existing kernel in the new one?

Clamd on my CentOS latest stable box takes an age to start.s in, well over half an hour. Two clamd processes get started, each of which has a VIRT of about 220m. Load average goes through the roof, values from 6-8+.The server is a bit weedy (190MB RAM, processor I forgot), but I didn't have these problems before. They seemed to arise after running freshclam to update definitions.

When first a regular HDD boots up, the BIOS passes control over to the first 512 bytes of the disk, so long as the disk has the magic number (correct signature) at the end of this first sector. The BIOS doesn't 'care' what is in this first sector; it just passes control over to the code within it and hopefully boot-up is underway. Other boot instructions may commonly lay elsewhere on the disk, which is fine, since the boot sector code will point to them and the process goes on.
Now, what happens when you boot from a CD or a USB stick? Not quite the same thing happens, does it? What I need to know is, when booting from alternative media, what is the BIOS 'looking for' and whereabouts on these new media does it expect to find the boot code? I've looked at the directory structures of CDs and sticks and there doesn't seem to be any common factor in the files and directories there that I can identify, unlike when I examine a regular HDD and its partitions with a hex editor.

I don't want to use ext4 because of journaling, as it's simply not required for usb sticks.
