Server :: Older Distributions Won't Recognize Newer Mother Board IDE DMA
Aug 25, 2010
I run an ISP with various servers such as mail servers.Once something works I let it run forever. Thus I have a mail server running FC5 on a Mach Speed pm400 via chip set motherboard.Recently the motherboard died, and I had to use a back up board to get it going again.I am now out of back up boards and need to purchase a new set for the future. However the mail server software will not activate the IDE DMA on these newer boards because the chip set drivers are not in the last kernel package that yum would download for FC5.
1.) Is there an easy fix to this problem to get the DMA working?
2.) Do I have to download and compile a latest kernel (2.6.x) to get the right drivers?
3.) Since FC5 is fully modularized, is there an easy way to create a similar kernel from a download without having to manually turn all the modules on?
4.) CAn I simply use the original .config from my existing kernel in the new one?

I have installed Fedora 14 on Intel's DH67BL mother board, which has a on board LAN port, Fedora 14 does not detect on-board LAN. Unfortunately, intel does not provide any driver support for linux OS :-(. However, if I install an additional LAN card, Fedora 14 detects it and everything works fine.

I am trying to switch from the video device built into the mother board, to a card i just put into my machine. I'm using gnome and don't know where to start. I shouldn't need new drivers (based on a possible misunderstanding) because I am going from a nvidia 6100 to a 8600. I have looked in various places like the control center but haven't had any luck. I just started using linux and have very little experience in the terminal. Issues with the current card are stopping me in my learning process.

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04
uname -r
2.6.28-11-generic
Checked cable/network with 386Box running Ubuntu 8.04 all OK. Could not get Realtek 8168 on mother board to work on Gigabyte H55M-S2H motherboard. I tried to install r8168 driver but no luck ... so I bought another Linux compatible card which turned out to be a RTL8139c (eth1) and the driver I am using on this is card is 8139too.
[Code]....
My preference would be to get the motherboard ethernet working but perhaps the card may be easier to get working. Anyway after searching the net for ideas and trying different things I've just about given up. I have reinstalled Ubuntu today so eth0 is back to using the r8169 driver. I'm no expert so my attempts at following other recipies have so far failed. From what I have read the 8139too driver should have worked with the RTL8139C chip so I have run out of ideas. I must be doing something wrong.

I'm trying to troubleshoot some strange networking problems. The pattern seems to be that only newer distributions are affected. CentOS 5.4 and Ubuntu 8.04 work fine out-of-the-box. But Arch, Sidux, AntiX, Fedora, etc. show the same pattern of errors.Certain websites cannot be found unless I disable ipv6 in Firefox. And certain addresses cannot be resolved using various terminal commands (wget, apt-get, yum, etc.). What I would ideally like is a permanent solution, perhaps changing some settings on my router, so that I don't have to deal with this each time I test-drive a new distro. I have a hunch the issue has something to do with my DSL provider (Fairpoint) filing for bankruptcy.
One more piece of information that may or may not be relevant: I recently switched a website from one hosting company to another. I noticed there was a delay of several days where I saw the old version at the old host, but viewing the site at a friend's house or the coffee shop showed the new site on the new host. This leads me to suspect DNS issues perhaps, but this is not an area of expertise.

I'm writing a story for LWN on Slackware 13.37 this week. I'd like to hear from current Slackware users: How are you using it, and why you're using it? What appeals to you about Slackware Linux instead of Ubuntu, Fedora, openSUSE, Debian, etc.? Slackware tends to move a bit more slowly than other distributions to adopt newer features (like, say, GRUB) -- is this a pro or con for you? How long have you been running Slackware?
Any other thoughts about Slackware? If you respond, indicate in the post how you'd like to be attributed if I use your response in the story. (e.g., sign your name or indicate that I should use your forum username, etc.)

I just been given a project to compile code to run under Red Hat Enterprise Desktop 5.3.
Does anyone know if Red Hat sells older versions of Red Hat Enterprise Desktop? RHEL 6 was just released last month. As I understand it, code compiled under RHEL 6 will probably not work under 5.3 due to difference in glibc.
Can I compile code using a Fedora distribution and run the code under Red Hat Enterprise Desktop 5.3 without recompiling the code? If so, does Fedora offer older versions of their distribution?

I would like to add latest tc+esfq functionality to machines running older distributions, FC3, FC5 etc. I am told I should down load the latest kernel and recompile with the proper patches which I can do. Are there problems with using latest kernels with older distributions, they are all running 2.6.x, but the x has of course gone up since FC3.

Is there a way to use the diff command between an older and a newer version of a file and only display the lines that have been added to the newer file and not the ones that have been removed without any of the explanation formatting, just the new lines. I'm trying to bypass the process of putting both files into a database and running an SQL "left join where old data is null" as I will need to do this on a regular basis.

Is removing previous older kernels "vmlinuz", when updates do get a newer version an easy task, or do the more recent Linux like Ubuntu 9.10 do that automatically, and only keep a few older previous kernels ?

I have HandBrake 0.9.4 installed from Slackbuilds.org, but a new version came out yesterday that I want to install, but it isn't up on slackbuilds yet. Can I install it from source without doing anything to the old install?
When I installed it from slackbuilds, the slackbuild script also installed all the external multimedia libraries that I need. If I use removepkg (or whatever the command is) to remove the old HandBrake before installing the new one, will that also remove the multimedia packages that were installed along with handbrake? They were all built into the same .tgz
On my work computer so I can't do anything with it right now anyway, so maybe a slackbuild will be up when I get home.

Specifically, I want Clementine player 0.6, but the guy that installed Ubuntu on my laptop put natty narwhal alpha 1 on it (don't ask me why. I wanted maverick since its stable but he never really asked. The whole thing was kinda a surprise), and Clementine only offers downloads for Ubuntu distros up to maverick. So. Can I/is there a way I can install it anyway? Or am I forced to just use Banshee until the official Update comes out and Clementine is updated in....

I have a server running ESXi. I want to know if it supports AMD-V for hardware-based virtualization. Is there any way to check it from one of the guest os running (centos 5).
Also, I tried rebooting the box and I can't see an option in the bios to turn on/off Virtualization. Although from Asus site they say it supports is:
[URL]
The motherboard is an ASUS KFN4-DRE and has 2 Dual Opteron 2216 2.4GHz processors.
Also, on a side note, I have another box with HDAMA board and 2 Dual Opteron 275s. Do these support AMD-V as well? No option in bios as well.

I tried to install Ubuntu Server on an Alix2d2 board: [URL]It has a CF card connected with an IDE interface and no vga output. The processor is a AMD Geode. I'm aware that I need a 386 kernel as described in the german wiki:
[URL]
What I did so far:
Installed imedia linux PCengines Alix build [URL] on an other Ubuntu machine with usb cf interface. This worked but I don't know how I can install Ubuntu from imedia linux.
Installed Ubuntu Server on the same Ubuntu machine. Installed the 386 kernel and changed the grub config file to enable the serial output to a terminal and updated grub[URL]. I created the file /etc/init/ttyS0.conf that the serial interface still works after the bootloader [URL].Unfortunately the alix board writes only "GRUB loading." and some empty lines.
Tried to boot with Tftpd32.exe by Ph. Jounin following this guide: [URL] So I set up a TFPT server following this german wiki: [URL]As advised changed /etc/inetd.conf and /etc/default/tftpd-hpa, prepared the boot image and the DHCP server. This should be enough on the server. I have to write N over the serial port to the board while it performs memory test to enable PXE boot. This was partly successful: it gets an IP adress but afterwards nothing happens. I can't find any error message in the syslog.
I attached my configuration files. As boot image I used [URL] and used the following commands to bring it into the right place:
Code:
sudo tar -xvzf netboot.tar.gz -C /var/lib/tftpboot/
sudo chown -R nobody:nogroup /var/lib/tftpboot
installing Ubuntu Server with PXE or from the other machine to the CF card or even directly from imedia linux.

My machine is:
Intel Celeron, 2000 MHz (20 x 100), 400MHz FSB, s478 Northwood core with 128 KB L2 Cache
768 MB RAM: 3 * 256 MB PC133 SDRAM (3.0-3-3-6 @ 133 MHz), DRAM:FSB running as 4:3
Intel Havre D845HV (3 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 SDR DIMM, Audio) (latest BIOS, HV84510A.86A.0050.P15.0305252001)
Western Digital 60GB hard disc, WDC WD600BB-75CAA0
SONY DVD-ROM DDU1612, and some generic floppy
[code]....
all in all this was a pretty good machine to run Windows XP SP3, MS office 2000 (or 2003), and some mozilla-based browser (Firefox can work OK, but with "K-Meleon 1.5.4" it's fast as lighting). It has enough horsepower to run CounterStrike at 1024*768 and play MiHD movies with just a few ocasional glitches. Plays DVDs or XVID and MP3s without any problems, and they don't seem to use much resources in Task Manager. Sound, graphics and network subsystem work very good, but this will always be a PC133 SDRAM system hence memory bandwidth problems, and not much can be done about that. Machine was used as office + internet box, with some Winamp music playing in the background and as such it was great.
Now I turned it into (dual boot) CentOS 5.4 development server for developing a nonprofit PHP site.Joomla-based contents load slower from this machine on the intranet then on the regular server online. It's not crazy slow (like pentium 1 @ 166 mhz) but it's definitelly not good either. I think it should be able to run much much better, especially when I remember the Athlon T-bird at 1 GhZ with 512 MB PC100 RAM used to be much more responsive while running web apps on Mandrake 9 (when it came out) with KDE WM, while this cellery runs just server in init 3 (no Xorg or Gnome, just command prompt).
Please advise me how could I enhance the speed of the system. CentOS 5.4 was installed with all settings on default. Everything worked plug'n'play, didn't need to install anything extra. Machine primarily runs Apache2 with PHP and MySQL, SSH and SFTP daemons, not much else I guess. No GUI, mostly it runs headless anyway. I'm mostly annoyed by the way it serves pages, it's like it takes up to 6 seconds to precache some complex PHP page and then poof! whole page appears at once. I'd much rather if it served the contents of the page part by part, gradually filling in the details. I'm not sure if (and how) that can be achieved though. I'd like to optimize servers (mostly Apache) and maybe net config to run smoother and faster.

I installed Ubuntu Server 8.10, 9.04, 10.04, until I discovered that the packages of these versions to upgrade and install graphics settings are not available, then install the current version is 11.04 and there I found that repositories responded and set me right. Then the repositories of previous versions are not available? When I install the current version on all packages that I need to back packs and save it for if I need it later.
How do I get the packages and put together a repository itself if others were dashed this is still operating, and maintenance would be needed?

I have set up a simple find and delete script for files older than X days. The problem is that some of the files that are send in this share are transfered from an archive server and creation/modified date remains the same when copied and the age of them could be a year ago or older and they get deleted over night by the script. For performance reasons the raid is mounted with noatime in fstab.Do you see any solution to this problem except enabling atime?I'm thinking at some more advanced script that writes the list of added files once a day and marks them for deletion after some time.
