TV hardware, convert a windoze XP media centre to a Linux os system. Windows XP Media center , a nice box but need to move on, the motherboard fried on the piece of S HP box but after replacing it my TV tuner card will not be recognized by Linux. MythTV doesnot or will not see it.

Up until now it had a windows XP and (besides the fact that it had windows) it work with the correct resolution - 1920x1080. I've installed Ubuntu (the latest available) after to many crashes during hd movies...
I installed the nvidia restricted drivers (the display is plain black otherwise) and my tv is being recognized as a CRT monitor. Guess it's because I'm using the vga connector instead of the dvi one. The problem is that the highest resolution it let me choose is 1024x768. I tried to mess around with the xorg.conf but i discovered it doesn't exist.
I search a tool to convert my media files to ogg-files. I've managed to to do so with VLC - but only file by file. Is there a way to just convert whole folders to ogg. Even if the files contained are in a lot of different formats?

I've been shaking my head these last few days trying to VNC into my Linux machine from my Windoze 7 machine using SSH. Here is what I've currently done so far:I have SSH configured using port 8567, and have opened the tcp port 8567 in my firewall. From what I gathered from other postings is that I don't have to open anymore ports for VNC in the firewall, because I'm going to "tunnel" using SSH and port 8567, that's what I needed to add localhost.Now I've set up putty for tunneling with the source port of 5901, and a destination port of localhost:5901.Ok, now when I connect, I can ssh just fine, log in and navigate through all my files. However when I start Real VNC and type in localhost:1, and click connect, I always get the error message: The connection closed unexpectedly. Do you wish to attempt to reconnect to localhost:1?
I just tried to download f14 onto a windoze box, because my Linux (F11) box is not connected (Cant get wireless usb to work)! After over an hour, I have a loose collection of files, when I thought I was downloading an 'ISO' file! Where Do I go to download an earlier version (F12 or F13), maybe they will give me a 'true' single 'ISO' file? (Fedoraproject only shows F14, no other options.)

So I downloaded Opensuse 11.2 onto a dvd. I then installed it.Ran/Started Opensuse for the first time... Wow. Beautiful, amazing, fast, etc etc. So.. Okay so far, except for one or 3 niggles, one of the main ones being that I could'nt connect to the Net.Anyway, I rebooted, and when the Startup (?)-Screen came up, it had 2 versions of Opensuse on the 'list' (one of them a Safe Mode), and ....3 versions of Windoze. Yeah.. Three. First bit of confusion.
I clicked on "Windows 1" and got a black scree with the words "Boot Mgr missing" (or similar), 'Press Ctrl Alt Del"..... Great, I thought. So I did that, anyway, and upon reboot tried "Windows 2" instead; same thing. Tried a third reboot, and "Windows 3". SAME. Now I'm P****d off.......Apparently, when it was installing, it said it would be 'Shrinking' Windows to make space. Would this have anything to do with it? How on earth do I get Windoze BACK, at least until I can try out another version of Opensuse OR a different Linux Distro????
How can I install software that comes as a .run file in a way that it is accessible at the command line and under the applications menu or the equivalent? I am aware that root privileges are required and know how to get them. The publisher of the software does not publish .rpm files.
The distribution I am using now, which will remain nameless other than it is not Fedora, is very secure, but nobody seems willing or able to tell me how to do this. There is an old version of the software for my distribution available, but it is three releases and likely a couple of years old. I looked around the file system, found the executable, but it was a small file that probably calls the real executable under another name.
The software in question is a electronic circuit capture and printed circuit board design program. I have numerous projects and a library I need access to.As for installing the Windoze (Quattro Pro) software, I couldn't get it to install at all, even with root privileges. (WINE complained I didn't have root privileges when I invoked it at the # prompt. I have recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 JJ on several ex-windoze/dual boot machines for my family. All has gone well apart from one niggle with email. We have used Eudora for years and been quite happy with it. Having looked at the Linux offerings I found the Evolution packaged with Ubuntu offered the most similar feature set (correct me if I'm wrong - I have not looked at a huge selection). All is well except for one or two little problems importing Eudora mailboxes -
1) all 'sent' mails seem to lose the date/time information - I have tried the import feature on Evolution and also manually moving the mailboxes. In both cases the messages are fine but no date information is carried over. Received mails are fine in both cases. This makes proper archiving very difficult.
2) mails lose the 'replied/reply' flags. Now the second is no big deal and may be a 'feature' of Eudora not implementing the Berkeley format correctly (or the feature doesn't exist anyway). The first however is a bit of a devil - if it is incorrect format by Eudora then shame on them.

As I understand, Truecrypt is compatible with both linux/windows/OSX, and has an option for a "hidden operating system."I want to Install both win7 and ubuntu, with ubuntu as a hidden OS. I have watched tutorials on ..... showing the method for creating a hidden OS for Windows, in this tutorial the second volume was created from the first volume and was effectively a clone of the original OS. View 2 Replies View RelatedMy old Creative Zen MP3 player has just gone titsup - it's gone into recovery mode and attempts to reload the firmware come up with device not connected errors (even under Windoze XP) So I'm looking around for a replacement and the Cowon D2 looks good as it takes SD cards like the zen (and I'd just bought 2 new 8Gb cards). The Zen used mtpfs which worked under linux but not well an I believe the D2 just connects as USB memory. Anyone out there using a Cowon D2 under Linux?

View 2 Replies View RelatedHere is my system: I have dell poweredge 1950 PERC 6 with 300 GB raid system. It has two disks of each 300GB RAID mirrored system. I have few applications and data that reached around 280GB. As you know, poweredge 1950 we can have only two disk.
They are not mission critical. Hence, I wanted to remove the raid system and use as a non-raid system. By doing it, The applications and data can grow upto 600GB. I do not want to loose the data and setup. I am not so clear about RAID system and its conversion.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up a Backup & Media server, which will be running debian. I will setup a small HD or SSD/CF card for the OS, and a MD raid for the data drives.The total size of the raid will be either 3 or 4TB, depending. Now, I need to figure out what filesystem to use on top of this raid.My criteria is as follows:
1. Support for large files. I can't imagine anything larger than about 1.2TB, but the 4GB of, say, fat32 just isn't enough.
2. Robust. I don't want it falling apart on me; nothing too unstable.
3. (and this is most important): Good Undelete support. I got burned recently when a software glitch managed to rm -rf my EXT4 drive. All the file data is still there, but all the metadata is gone. I *DO NOT* want that happening with this. I want to be able to do a "RM / -RF", immediately unmount it, and then recover *all* of the deleted data. Obviously, when data is overwritten it's overwritten, but I don't want to lose all my metadata if a "RM -RF" happens. FAT-32 is the model I'm looking at: You can usually recover deleted files if anything happens to the drive.
So, what are my options?EXT2 looks like a possibility. EX4 is *clear out*, unless there's some nice utility/mode that keeps a backup of all deleted metadata etc.
I tried installing F14 and F15 but display resulted in freezing. The display would work upto "Check Media/Skip Test" for media during installation and the system freezes immediately after that. So I did a VNC installation from another system. But the initiation of X would always result in hanging of the box. After googling and trying various solutions, I found a ray of hope in one solution which suggested adding "vesafb:mtrr,ywrap vga=0x318" to the kernel arguments. This resulted in displaying successfully the boot-time flash (Fedora logo being filled with white color) during booting. But "startx" or "inittab 5" result in hanging of the system.

I've installed a standalone system (no internet connection), and now I would like to add more software from the 7CD I used for the clean installation. I've enabled the 'media-repo' and disabled any other, but when I go to the main menu '->remove/install software' the System shows the message 'Can't find repomd.xml file...' and stops.
What can I do to enable this method?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was recently requested to try and convert a running system to RAID level 1. I did not succeed in this task. However, I am still interested in accomplishing this task in a test environment.What I did was create a RAID device with a device missing e.g.
mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 missing /dev/sdb2
Once the RAID was up and running I created the /etc/mdadm.conf file so that it would activate the RAID device on boot. Once the device was created I copied all the data from the running root filesystem to the /dev/md0 device. The only directory that I didn't copy was the /proc directory. When I rebooted the machine I had a kernel panic and the system couldn't find /dev/root. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could provide some information/tips regarding the problem.
