I need to run a GUI on my server (To be able to run an Code::Blocks or Lazarus) and then access the server GUI via a terminal window on Windoze XP. I have SSH running on the server and PuTTY on windoze, which is fine for a shell but I need the GUI.So... which is the best GUI for the server and which terminal software on XP?

I am new to Samba.I'm running Fedora 10 and I've just download samba successfully and have the smb service running on my system.I'm in GNOME and select System and then Administration and Samba does not appear in the drop down menu.I have an NFS menu selection but no samba selection.I ran yum install and it installed successfully. If I can't get the samba config window is there a way I can configure in terminal window?

Here is what I've currently done so far:I have SSH configured using port 8567, and have opened the tcp port 8567 in my firewall. From what I gathered from other postings is that I don't have to open anymore ports for VNC in the firewall, because I'm going to "tunnel" using SSH and port 8567, that's what I needed to add localhost.Now I've set up putty for tunneling with the source port of 5901, and a destination port of localhost:5901.Ok, now when I connect, I can ssh just fine, log in and navigate through all my files. However when I start Real VNC and type in localhost:1, and click connect, I always get the error message: The connection closed unexpectedly. Do you wish to attempt to reconnect to localhost:1?
When I VNC into my CentOS server I am always met with the usual GUI and an annoying terminal window. If I try to close the terminal window it reappears immediately. I can only minimize it to the taskbar. Am I missing a simple setting to disable this?

In windows using remote desktop connection you can press Ctrl+Alt+minus to copy the current window on the remote desktop to the clipboard. How do you do that in Ubuntu's terminal server client? I have not found any key combination that works

I need to be able to monitor what users are doing at any given time and be able to pull up each users activity history. Essentially I need to be able to pinpoint who modified a file at what time. Also what is the best method to monitor things like nmap probes?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've created a brand new CentOS 5.4 (Final) 64bit machine AMI on Amazon EC2. This was based off an existing image. I was able to follow the wiki to add NX server. I am using WIN XP desktop for NX client.
I can connect to the EC2 machine and get the GNOME desktop fine. I see the usual CentOS desktop and poke around.
Q/Problem:
I expected to open the Terminal window and get a shell prompt to su into root user (I need to be root to install some software that needs GUI). I do not want to install this from my plain SSH connection to EC2 (hence the NX server etc.).
When I open the Terminal window, all I get is the NX>105 prompt. I need to get to a shell prompt so I can su into root. For life of me, I cannot get around this prompt (I looked at NX documentation too). Note that this is a prompt NOT on client but on the remote machine. I do not need this as I'm already authenticated and logged in to remote GNOME desktop.
Obviously the TERMINAL is running some NX start up script (I've no idea which one). If there is some other way to sudo into root?
i'm not sure for using the correct channel here but i hope someone out there can answer my little questions. 1st in older version i was able to change the settings of the terminal look as the font color, background color and so on. I was also able to define a default window size of a new terminal window. But since after upgrading to to the first release this year and a complete new installation of the current release Maverick i do not find this option anymore. Is there a way how to set up the terminal default window size?

View 9 Replies View RelatedNewly installed Debian system from years with Fedora. Ran system update and system got hosed, booted but no Gnome. Got Gnome back after MANY 'aptitude upgrade's. Xemacs disappeared! Along with other things I installed. Tried to install Xemacs but it is broken and will not install, complains about dpkg TOO current(?). So downloaded Xemacs for Xemacs.org and compiled source, installed.
Now when I start Xemacs is does not run in an X window but runs emacs in a terminal window. If I run it from a script, it complains about 'not in tty window'.

My question is: will i be able to access my company's Terminal Server site [URL] from browser in Linux, and be able to launch the applications? (Outlook, etc.) Seems to connect to Windows Server 2008. If this works in Linux, that would make my life a lot easier..

View 1 Replies View RelatedI find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
Clean install of 10.04 Server 32 bit.Only services OpenSSH Server and Print Server.Machine boots and can be accessed through ssh.Virtual terminals (cntl-alt-1,2,3,4,... do not result in video to the monitor (no sync) or a display.If I type blind, I can log in, ssh back to my other machine, and create a file. So the virtual terminal is there and listening to the keyboard and running, just not creating a display.
This machine has been working fine with 08.10 for quite time up until yesterday, so I don't believe it is a hardware problem.Any ideas why the video on the virtual terminals would not work?
my laptop seems to have a bad HDD, and I was thinking of trying to make it a "thin client." However since it is a laptop obviously I want to take it places. Is it possible to make a terminal server and "thin client" connect through the internet and not just LAN?The reason I quote thin client is because in my mind I am still going to need to use some HDD so I can connect to the internet and find my server.

I am at a loss. I can not access my work remote desktop via the terminal server client on my wired box running Ubuntu 10.10. My wireless laptop is able to connect right away once I established the VPN connection. The VPN connection is established on both boxes with no problems.
When I tried the Terminal Server Client on my wired boxed, it says it can not establish a connection. Yet my wireless box gets connected immediately!
I check the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and the /etc/resolv.conf to see if there were any differences, but they are essentially the same. When I have the vpnc connection, they both recognize it and I am able to ping the IP address shown when I do a "ifconfig" on the terminal.
What can be the problem? Anything I need to configure on a wired computer versus a wireless one? What else can I check?
I have an ubuntu fileserver and an ubuntu laptop both running 10.10.For some reason I can't connect to the server (file or remote terminal) from the laptop, even though I can access ssh through terminal on my mac and have been able to mount the filesystem on another computer running the ubuntu liveCD. I just get the error 'no route to host'.I've tried turning off the firewall on the laptop and re-installing ssh on both computers, but I don't have a clue what to do next!

I'm new to Linux and have taken over at a company where the linux admin walked out. he has several older linux based servers running version 8.1 i tried running the command sudo apt-get install swat xinetd to setup swat but i get an error that it can't find the package. in addition, this directory xinetd is no where to be found under the etc directory. i've verified that samba is in fact installed on these servers but for some reason the xinetd and inetd directories are not on these servers.
Could it be possible that this older version of linux does not support Swat? i'm considering upgrading very soon to the latest but my main problem right now is i need to copy all web server html files that he had on the web Server i know there are different ways to copy files from linux systems but need the best way to copy all the files so none of the website links get broke off this linux server over to my windows server.
Since i don't have access to anything of the directories nor files on the web server, what is the best way to copy these files and folders off this server?
Is there a way to set a default terminal window size when I click on the "Terminal" icon? I need my terminal to be of a certain size every time I click on it?

View 3 Replies View Relatedi have setup Open VPN on Ubuntu 9.04, generated the key and have it running successfully on the server end. I download the open vpn client for windows, copied over the key ca and cert file and connected to the erver. All went well and the open vpn gui said its connected to the server (green comp icon in taskbar) and it said in a ballon it assigned me an ip of 10.8.0.6 it all looks good... BUT i have no vpn access... The virtual adapted in windows is not able to pull an actual IP/gateway and such...

I have a few issues after setting up Openvpn. At work i just setup a new Ubuntu Server 10.4. The server itself is working Great. I ended up getting Openvpn installed and working to a point. I have searched online and done as much reading as i could find but i keep running into the problem of not understanding. So here is the problem.
The server is set on a static IP address. At first i tried to have the config file listen on a virtual ip address i setup up in /etc/network/interface but that ended up not working so i set it to its specific ip address. I kept running into the error about script security while trying to start Openvpn. I tried to add into the config file "script-security 2" that way the up.sh and down.sh scripts were allowed to be run. That didn't help and then i kept trying to run Openvpn manually running the command

So once this was done i connected form a client machine and was given an ip address like i should. The only issue is that i was not able to actually comunicate with the server. I should note that this is a web server that i can view from the outside. (actually get to the webpage) but i tried to access the website and share via the Openvpn gateway. I also tried to access the website portion using the hostname with no luck.

I'm using vsftpd to setup an ftp server, but whenever i attempt to connect, it asks me for a user name ( which i enter and it accepts) but it then asks for a password, which i am clueless as to what it is. I'm certain that i havent specified a password in any config file. Is there a default password i should know about?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm thinking about some ways to limit access to my web-server. It runs Nginx and php in FCGI. The server contains a large amount of information. The data is freely available and no authentication is required but other companies might like to mirror it and use on their own servers.
The requests could be limited on different levels: IP, TCP, HTTP (by nginx) or by the php application. I found some solutions (like Nginx's limit_req_zone directive), but they do not solve the second part of the problem: there's no way to define a whitelist of clients who are allowed to use the data.
I thought about an intellectual firewall that would limit the requests on IP basis, but I'm yet to find such device. Another way was to hack some scripts that would parse the log file every minute and modify the iptables to ban suspicious IPs. It would take days and I doubt this system will survive, say, 1000 requests per second.
Perhaps, some HTTP proxy, like Squid, could do this?
I have no idea what is going on here and this is the second time it has done this but. I just installed Lucid Lynx Desktop Edition for my Server. I have installed apache php5 mysql binarys. I have 3 ips on the machine 10.0.1.30, 10.0.1.37, 10.0.1.38. .30 is the main ip 10/100 the rest are 10,100,1000 ports. I can only access Apache 2.2 over .37 or .38 but not .30
I have not used Ubuntu alot but I am starting to and this really pisses me off since all my computer have aliases to the machine through .30
I just finished setting up my small server, however I realized that no one can connect to it from the outside. The reason being is that my router is assigning internal ip's and dyndns is linked to that. I need port 80 for the Apache server, but if I have the router forward that port to my particular ip, won't it screw with everyone else's internet too?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure is this is possible or not, but what I would like to do is take my public address mydomain.com and configure a virtual host something.mydomain.com only instead of having the content on the same server I would like it to point to the IP of my virtual machine that is in my private network and display that page publicly. Does anyone know if this is possible, or how to do it? I have done this with port forwards, but would like them both to be on the same port.
