I know the fairly straightforward and obvious answer to this question, but I wanted to get the peoples' thoughts and feedback about it.I need to use Windoze for general work and school reasons. There have been a few things, namely ActiveX controls, that I have been unable to port to Linux.My question is: would it be better to use Windoze or Linux as the host OS, and why?
View 1 RepliesI would normally consider throwing the laptop out the window but I have not done that.YetHere's the situation. I got fed up with Windoze. So I downloaded Opensuse 11.2 onto a dvd. I then installed it.Ran/Started Opensuse for the first time... Wow. Beautiful, amazing, fast, etc etc. So.. Okay so far, except for one or 3 niggles, one of the main ones being that I could'nt connect to the Net.Anyway, I rebooted, and when the Startup (?)-Screen came up, it had 2 versions of Opensuse on the 'list' (one of them a Safe Mode), and ....3 versions of Windoze. Yeah.. Three. First bit of confusion.
I clicked on "Windows 1" and got a black scree with the words "Boot Mgr missing" (or similar), 'Press Ctrl Alt Del"..... Great, I thought. So I did that, anyway, and upon reboot tried "Windows 2" instead; same thing. Tried a third reboot, and "Windows 3". SAME. Now I'm P****d off.......Apparently, when it was installing, it said it would be 'Shrinking' Windows to make space. Would this have anything to do with it? How on earth do I get Windoze BACK, at least until I can try out another version of Opensuse OR a different Linux Distro????
My old Creative Zen MP3 player has just gone titsup - it's gone into recovery mode and attempts to reload the firmware come up with device not connected errors (even under Windoze XP) So I'm looking around for a replacement and the Cowon D2 looks good as it takes SD cards like the zen (and I'd just bought 2 new 8Gb cards). The Zen used mtpfs which worked under linux but not well an I believe the D2 just connects as USB memory. Anyone out there using a Cowon D2 under Linux?
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis card has been the bane of my existence for a while. In the old days I could get it to work with Fedora using a generic video driver. A friend recommended OpenSuse because of my love for KDE.
The good news is that install went greeeeat. But after that, I once again got a black screen with a line randomly done it. Is there a way to change? I tried changing those resolution options but it didn't work. I have the Windoze driver from Dell's site. Its Dell Inspiron 5160.
I've been shaking my head these last few days trying to VNC into my Linux machine from my Windoze 7 machine using SSH. Here is what I've currently done so far:I have SSH configured using port 8567, and have opened the tcp port 8567 in my firewall. From what I gathered from other postings is that I don't have to open anymore ports for VNC in the firewall, because I'm going to "tunnel" using SSH and port 8567, that's what I needed to add localhost.Now I've set up putty for tunneling with the source port of 5901, and a destination port of localhost:5901.Ok, now when I connect, I can ssh just fine, log in and navigate through all my files. However when I start Real VNC and type in localhost:1, and click connect, I always get the error message: The connection closed unexpectedly. Do you wish to attempt to reconnect to localhost:1?
I just tried to download f14 onto a windoze box, because my Linux (F11) box is not connected (Cant get wireless usb to work)! After over an hour, I have a loose collection of files, when I thought I was downloading an 'ISO' file! Where Do I go to download an earlier version (F12 or F13), maybe they will give me a 'true' single 'ISO' file? (Fedoraproject only shows F14, no other options.)

I am aware that root privileges are required and know how to get them. The publisher of the software does not publish .rpm files.
The distribution I am using now, which will remain nameless other than it is not Fedora, is very secure, but nobody seems willing or able to tell me how to do this. There is an old version of the software for my distribution available, but it is three releases and likely a couple of years old. I looked around the file system, found the executable, but it was a small file that probably calls the real executable under another name.
The software in question is a electronic circuit capture and printed circuit board design program. I have numerous projects and a library I need access to.As for installing the Windoze (Quattro Pro) software, I couldn't get it to install at all, even with root privileges. (WINE complained I didn't have root privileges when I invoked it at the # prompt. I couldn't determine how to install the software on anything other than XP. ) I wasn't and remain uninterested in debugging multimegabyte spreadsheets a second time
I have recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 JJ on several ex-windoze/dual boot machines for my family. All has gone well apart from one niggle with email. We have used Eudora for years and been quite happy with it. Having looked at the Linux offerings I found the Evolution packaged with Ubuntu offered the most similar feature set (correct me if I'm wrong - I have not looked at a huge selection). All is well except for one or two little problems importing Eudora mailboxes -
1) all 'sent' mails seem to lose the date/time information - I have tried the import feature on Evolution and also manually moving the mailboxes. In both cases the messages are fine but no date information is carried over. Received mails are fine in both cases. This makes proper archiving very difficult.
2) mails lose the 'replied/reply' flags. Now the second is no big deal and may be a 'feature' of Eudora not implementing the Berkeley format correctly (or the feature doesn't exist anyway). The first however is a bit of a devil - if it is incorrect format by Eudora then shame on them.
I need to run a GUI on my server (To be able to run an Code::Blocks or Lazarus) and then access the server GUI via a terminal window on Windoze XP. As I understand, Truecrypt is compatible with both linux/windows/OSX, and has an option for a "hidden operating system."I want to Install both win7 and ubuntu, with ubuntu as a hidden OS. I have watched tutorials on ..... showing the method for creating a hidden OS for Windows, in this tutorial the second volume was created from the first volume and was effectively a clone of the original OS. TV hardware, convert a windoze XP media centre to a Linux os system. Windows XP Media center , a nice box but need to move on, the motherboard fried on the piece of S HP box but after replacing it my TV tuner card will not be recognized by Linux. MythTV doesnot or will not see it.

I am working on a cluster for a molecular dynamics class and I have to edit my FORTRAN code (only the newest and best for me!). In order to get through to the cluster I have to ssh in. The network on which the cluster resides is behind a firewall, so I have to ssh through the firewall into the network first.
this is fine, I can login and move files and folders as needed, including sftp-ing into host 1, then into the cluster so I can transfer files from cluster to host and then host to me. This gets rather tiresome, so it would be nice to edit the files in place.
The problem is that when I access my code with emacs it launches the emacs client on Host 1, with no mouse support. I know the purists will howl about how I should be using keyboard shortcuts, but I am a chemist and not a programmer, so the mouse is very nice for me. Is there any way I can perhaps mount the cluster using sshfs so that when I open my code it launches a local instance of emacs? Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I thought it was network related.
I got a bunch of machines (~10) that I share with my co-workers. I have appropriate .ssh file(s) set up so I don't get prompt for password when I try to ssh.Currently I ssh into these hosts and then do a top to check the load before I start using the machine. I need a way to transfer the files en masse from the server with the large number of files to the one that is essentially blank.I don't have space on the used host to simply gzip all the files. I've googled this and see that there may be some combination of tar and/or gzip that will let me do this with some sort of redirection.
I really need and example line of how this can be accomplished. If my explanation seems rather sparse, I can supply more details.
Bit of an odd one, this. I've migrated a website from my old server to a new machine. Both servers run Ubuntu + Apache2. Both only serve a single site, apart from the default site.I've flipped the domain name to the new IP address.The trouble is that after moving the virtual host config over into sites-available, with the necessary link in sites-enabled, Apache attempts to serve from the default web root (/var/www) rather than the actual site content (in /var/www/technology). View 4 Replies View RelatedThe internal network is behind nat done by the PC Router.The TP Link is recieving wireless signal from outdoors and it has switching and basic routing capabilities. I'm using the PC router for better routing options.PC Router (or R for short) is a triple-booting machine - Linux, FreeBSD and Windows. It has two lan cards - external (ext_if) - 100Mbps Realtek 8139 and internal (int_if) - 1Gbps integrated Realtek 8169.The problem is that all traffic from R to the network is slow - about 5-20K, while the traffic in the oppoiste direction is all right - about 10MB that is fine for 100Mbps cables, NICs and switches. The problem persist no matter the OS the pc R is running.I've tried some debugging on the situation as follows:
- put another PC at the place of R - everything is fine. That exclude the possibility of damaged cables, RJ-45s, switches and etc.
- connected both of the NICs to the Internet while the internal network is being disconnected and they both work fine (no delays)
- traffic shaping is not running
- there is nothing in firewalls except NATing the internal network (and it is working fine). Actually these firewall rules have been operational for more than months and everything was fine untill a week or two ago.
- changed the internal NIC with another
- connected the internal network directly to the TP and all of the PCs are getting good network performance. Then connected the R machine to the TP as well and there was good performance between the internal network PCs and R.
- R has good performance to the TP. In fact everything has good performance directly to the TP (when not connecting trough R).
- the problem persist only between R and machines from the internal network.
I need to blacklist any incoming/outgoing connections to Google. I need to add filter something like this: *google*
View 5 Replies View RelatedI updated yesterday. Main change was from kde 4.5 to 4.6. Since then when I start kmail I have always a message about the certificate not applying to the given host. I use kmail to connect to a dovecot imap server. Everything worked fine before. I know very little about certificates. I tried to generate again the certificates (running /usr/share/doc/packages/dovecot/mkcert.sh) but I don't know what else to do.

However, if I run this on Linux, I receive a "permission denied" when I am prompted for my login and password. It's obviously making some type of connection, otherwise it wouldn't be prompting me for authentication.I initially thought this was a firewall issue.I opened up port 22 and I even tried disabling the firewall altogether.However, I still received this error.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOpenSUSE version: 11.2 *and* 10.0 I am unable to send email. It appears I am being blocked by my ISP [URL]... A Wireshark trace shows ICMP type 3 Code 13 - "Administratively filtered". It's important to note that I don't know exactly when the problem started, because I seldom use my ISP email account, I use Yahoo web mail due to the "throwaway" nature if I get hit with spam. I only discovered the problem when testing the functionality of 11.2. I suspect the problem started several months ago: I restored openSUSE 10.0 and the problem exists there too. I wish I'd sent that last email via 10.0 before the upgrade.
The weird thing is that using Windows 2000 box I can get a successful connection using telnet (Telnet also fails on the openSUSE box.) It appears to me there is something in the Linux TCP stack that Teksavvy doesn't like. I am on dial up and I pointed this out to Teksavvy tech support, as I am probably the only person left on dialup and the reason no one else has reported the problem
I can lookup DNS hostnames with dig and nslookup, but nothing else seems to be able to resolve anything. ping, telnet, Firefox, everything gets "unknown host".

On my laptop (HPDV7), using DHCP for network access, KDE4.
I use Network Manager to manage wired and wireless connectivity.
I also have Samba server running for connectivity to Windows machines.
My router runs DD-WRT.
How do I tell this HPDV7 system to propagate a Host Name up to the router?
In the DD-WRT status screen, I see Host Name as "*" associated with the assigned IP address.
I cannot, for example, ping my HPDV7 machine from my windows machine, I assume because the router (also providing DNS for my network) does not provide the name to address translation.
I CAN ping the IP address directly, and Samba connectivity from the Windows machine to HPDV7 works.

I am running 11.2 and set ssh to boot at runlevel 3 and 5 through yast and started the service through the terminal. I have turned off the firewall on my wireless router and in the local firewall. When I try to connect from a machine in my office, I get the following

I am a bit of a n00b when it come to linux but I am setting up a test environment were I have a appliance monitoring network traffic. Part of my test requires me to copy a file via RCP from one host to another host. I have two ubuntu boxes. I have allowed the subnet in the etchost.allow for ALL. I have installed rsh-server
When I try to copy the file it looks like it tried to use SCP instad of RCP because it connects to 22 instead of 544. Also note that traffic must be unecrypted thus me trying to use Is there anyway to make ubuntu go old school to allow me to use rcp instead?
