i have installed ubuntu 10.4 on my compaq 615 system successfully but when i restart the system it freezes, jus giving me a blank screen... i already have windows 7 home premium on the system then i partitioned sum space for the ubuntu but it still dosent work...
View 4 RepliesI've used Mint a couple times to try to recover my old computers, but I only worked with it as long as I needed to. Now, I'm going to give Ubuntu a try so I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and burned it to a DVD. When I try to boot it up with the DVD in, it does the startup screen that I'm used to before it loads the actual OS, and then it just gives me a blank screen. The only way to exit is to shut down the computer

Alright so this happens to me after every time wine updates from the wine PPA. Foobar2000 works fine till Wine updates, after it updates it pops up a full sized window and instead of it looking like it should it.... looks like whatever was on the screen when the window opens. It's non functional. I tried using the portable version of wine this time and the same thing happens after a update. This is... sad for me because I use it for transcoding.

I got a new Lenovo S20 and I am having trouble loading Linux. I've loaded these variants with no success:
Ubuntu desktop
Ubuntu server
Linux Mint
CentOS
vmWare esxi
The live CD's run, and very nicely at that. But once I install to the workstation they won't boot. I just get a blank screen. I've tried different bootloaders.. I've toyed with different BIOS settings.. I've even installed to different drives (a hard disk and an SSD). Maybe a hint: BSD installs and runs with no problem at all. I have PC-BSD running at the moment. It's nice, maybe I'll keep it. But I'd rather have Linux.
My amateur computer science mind sees this as not a boot loader issue (recovery mode shows Linux seems to be loading to a point.. but I can't see the script line just before the lockup) not graphics related; UB Server and vmWare are text-only and they won't load either probably not a bios issue (liveCDs run and other people run Linux on S20s) not hardware (Windows and BSD run on this one)
Is there a known problem with the Lubuntu 10.10 image here? I have downloaded it to two different computers, then burned the images to two different blank CD's (different brands) and neither loads. Both only get as far as the Lubuntu menu, once ENTER is pressed at that point to load the LiveCD, a blank screen eventually appears with a flashing cursor at the upper left of the screen, that's it. They were both burned using the slowest burn speeds available.
View 9 Replies View Relatedlike any other Linux newb, I came to Ubuntu because my Windows crashed one time too many. And I chose Ubuntu because "it just works". But these past few days that hasn't been true. I'm posting this from a netbook with Ubuntu, and am having no problems whatsoever, but normally I use an Acer Aspire 5920G laptop. I'll include the specs as written on the sticker:
* Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5250 (1.5GHz etc)
* Up to 1024 MB Nvidia Geforce 8600M GS Turbocache
* 2 GB DDR2
Let me know if you need more details, and I'll add them later. Now, what happened was I clicked "hibernate" while leaving Firefox open. (I've done this hundreds of times, no problem) And when I went to turn it back on the next day there were weird graphical glitches in the loading screen, and it booted to the "tty1" prompt screen. I did a lot of googling and found quite a few posts about it, but the solutions either didn't work, or I didn't understand them. After trying several different suggestions from this forum and others, I managed to delete the graphics drivers. That enabled me to boot in low graphics mode, and naturally, I tried a whole bunch of things to make it work properly again. That only made it worse. Now it went straight from the loading screen to just blanking out and turning the display off. So, I tried new things. Over and over. The weird thing is even when I disconnected my harddrive and ran from a Live USB, the problem persisted. Could there be an issue with the graphics card itself? Anyway, after reconnecting the harddrive I tried to boot again. And it suddenly worked. Even HDMI to my bigger screen worked.

I am new to ubuntu and I would really like to try it out, however I cant do the demo it freezes, I cant boot it either. I got rid of the quiet splash and watched it load. The last thing I saw before it went to just a blank screen was the ubuntu logo and it said loading apparmor then ok, went back to the previous command line screen and said done. Then it was just blank. No mouse, no blinking cursor, nothing.

I do not have an operating system on this laptop.

Whatever I type in is working, like now I type in the terminal firefox and it is how I ended up here. Try to type thunderbird in the terminal and my mail server started no problem. But nothing on my screen, don't no where to go from here.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've made a Live CD of version 10.04 on a machine running 10.04 (amd64). The disk boots fine on a 2nd machine but does not boot on the machine that created it. The CD/DVD is new and works for other things so I don't think it is this. The Live CD gets to the ISOLINUX screen but instead of "Loading" the screen goes blank and the system shuts down. I've tried everything I can think of (the disk works fine on another machine).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to build a dual boot ubuntu 8.10 and fedora 10.I have ubuntu sucessfully installed. with a free partition ready for fedora.I cant seem to get fedora past the beginning of the install. Once it says its loading anaconda, my screen either goes blank, or the anaconda fails and the install exits, telling me to reboot my system.I have downloaded the DVD twice. once from the website, and i think when I bruned it it didn't burn right, I then downloaded it from torrent just to be safe and reburned at the slowest speed. It passes the media test.
I have been reading around it may be cause of my video card?My computer is the following.AMD Athlon +2400 XPXFX Nvidia Geforce 6800 GT or something close.80 gig hard drive1.5 gigs of DDR ram.MSI Motherboard not sure of model off top of my head.I really wanna get this dual boot working, As I feel fedora may have advantages over ubuntu. I was going to try to get ahold of another video card, and maybe try that. What do you think I should do
I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.
View 3 Replies View Relatedreally wish to customize my GDM for ubuntu 11.4 but failed to do so.....therefore i decided to use alt. such as SLiM.....I could install it properly in virtualbox but when i went to do it on my real ubuntu 11.4 ......the screen stops at plymouth theme or goes blank after loading plymouth theme......then i read further more blogs and made changes and now even if i configure SLim the GDM starts no matter what i do .........

Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
When i use my computer (whether it's going online, typing, playing a flash game, or coding) I get these "Black Flashes" that are becoming longer and more frequent. A "Black Flash" is when my computer screen turns blank (but you can still see the backlight) and i have to press the NUMpad ENTER button, shake my mouse furiously, or click my mouse, which sometimes causes undesired actions, but gets me my screen back. sometimes the Black Flashes last a milisecond or 5 seconds or i have to hold the power button and restart because it won't come back on.

and I've had Ubuntu Linux (10.10) for maybe a month and a half now. Im very satisfied with the whole system, no problems up until an update about maybe 2 weeks ago from today (rough estimate). Anyways, when I start my computer and choose to start Ubuntu, about half of the time it will load with some weird new login screen (because of update), and their are other times where the screen will go blank. I dont think its very safe to cut the power from the computer through the power button :/ I realize there are other posts regarding this, and I apologize if this is against the rules, I just thought maybe it would be appropriate to start a thread with this problem for 10.10 users

Last time I installed ubuntu linux to my whole HDD, the same problem happened.The way I fixed the problem last time was by formatting the HDD with an internal HDD dock and then installing windows with linux dual boot.As I do not want to go through the hassle by installing windows again, and I would be very delighted if anyone had an alternate way. I really want my laptop to be windows free!It seems to me that my laptop is somehow constructed to crash / go blank if no windows partition / boot loader is detected. I have no idea why they would do that, maybe you have a better explanation?

The Arch Wiki page about it (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Catalyst) isn't very helpful, I don't really understand it. It mentions different packages and something about some kernel modules, with no explanation at all about what they do and very poor instructions on how to use them.
I just tried installing "catalyst-daemon" from the AUR, but it just gives me a blank screen when I start X. Nothing happens when I try to use Ctrl+Alt+F2, and nothing happens when I try to blindly log in and enter "shutdown -r now" (I ended up pressing the Reset button). I uninstalled it (everything still worked fine as long as you don't start X), and now everything's back to normal.
I am trying to install Ubuntu Netbook on an iiView A2. I realize this is not necessarily supported according to the Ubuntu documentation, however, one of my friends who has the same netbook was able to accomplish this with no issues. The computer boots up from the USB just fine, I get to the menu and choose install Ubuntu. I see a cursor flash on the screen for a second and then the Ubuntu logo. Immediately after seeing the Ubuntu logo the screen goes black (or blank) and I get no HDD activity (or any other activity). I have let it set for quite some time but it does not appear to be doing anything. This same kind of thing happens when I choose Try Ubuntu without installing from the initial menu after boot.how to install from the command line and edit xorg.conf later?

I think I followed the directions here correctly, but all I get is a blank white screen after I login. The documentation page works fine, but I don't see anything on the main http://localhost/nagios page. I have looked at other solutions to this problem (adding the correct path to the open_basedir in /etc/php.ini) and that still did nothing. Any Way to decode my httpd logs... Any time I refresh, I get these four errors from /var/log/httpd/error_log:

yum install kmod-nvidia
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686

I'm running RHEL 5 on a dell server. Recently, after some updates were installed, the server hangs when trying to start the gui (its set to run level 5)to get into the login screen. I can boot into run level 3 but get the same issue when I startx. CTRL-ALT-BackSpace doesn't return me to the command prompt. I get a blank screen with two letters and a blinking cursor. Which direction or log files to look at to start the troubleshooting.
