General :: Ubuntu 10.10 Live Cd Immediately Giving A Blank Screen?

Mar 3, 2011

I've used Mint a couple times to try to recover my old computers, but I only worked with it as long as I needed to. Now, I'm going to give Ubuntu a try so I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and burned it to a DVD. When I try to boot it up with the DVD in, it does the startup screen that I'm used to before it loads the actual OS, and then it just gives me a blank screen. The only way to exit is to shut down the computer

Ubuntu :: Foobar2000 Giving A Blank Screen After Upgrade?

Dec 22, 2010

Ubuntu 10.10 32 Bit
Wine 1.3.9

Alright so this happens to me after every time wine updates from the wine PPA. Foobar2000 works fine till Wine updates, after it updates it pops up a full sized window and instead of it looking like it should it.... looks like whatever was on the screen when the window opens. It's non functional. I tried using the portable version of wine this time and the same thing happens after a update. This is... sad for me because I use it for transcoding.

Bellow is what was spat at me when I ran it thru a terminal.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Live CD Blank Screen

Feb 27, 2010

I recently got a new laptop and am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on it. I have installed it on my two other computers without any problems, but there seems to be a hitch with my new one. So I boot up using the live CD and then am presented with the option to test Ubuntu or install it. If I choose either of these the screen just goes blank. If I go with the first option of testing Ubuntu before installing, I can hear the intro drumbeats but the screen is still blank.

I have searched in some forums and tried some people's advice, like pressing Ctrl+Alt+- or trl+Alt+Backspace to change the resolution and restart X windows, respectivley. But it doesn't seem to work.
I'll list my laptops specs just in case my problem has anything to do with them:

MSi
Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit
Intel Core i3 M 330 2.13GHz
4GB DDR3 RAM
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD

Ubuntu Installation :: Run Live CD/DVD Toshiba C660 - Blank Screen?

I've been trying for some time to install Ubuntu 10.10 or variant on my Toshiba C660 with ATI graphics card.I seem to keep hitting a brick wall when attempting to run a live disc and end up at a blank screen. I get this result despite tryingots of different installation discs. Ubuntu 10.04 seems to run with no problems.I believe the problem is to do with the graphics card from googling and have tried various changes to the live cd/dvd boot options (set nomodeset & radeon.modeset=0) but with no success

Ubuntu :: 64 Bit Live USB, Blank Screen On Thinkpad X121e (Intel)

Aug 16, 2011

I have just received my new laptop - a Thinkpad x121e, with Intel (Core i3).

I am trying to put ubuntu on it, but i am having some problems with the 64 bit live USB.

When i run the USB i get i get a GRUB-looking screen, with options to:

Quote:

1. Try Ubuntu without installing
2. Install Ubuntu
3. Check the disk for errors

Wanting to repartition my hard drive (using GParted) so that i can dual boot, i Quote:

Try Ubuntu without Installing

, at which point the screen goes blank and nothing happens. I am then forced into a hard reboot. I get the exact same result when i pick

Quote:

Check the disk for errors

from the GRUB-like screen

To check the live USB, i tried it on my old laptop (32bit, Celeron M). When i did so i got a purple screen with an image of what looks like a keyboard and a man at the bottom, and then a message telling me to try a kernel which matches with my machine's architecture.

I then tried a live USB with 32 bit ubuntu and the live USB works fine - i am sending this email from this live instance running on my new Thinkpad. The same can be said for a 32 bit Mint live usb which also worked on the Thinkpad.

So i am not sure what is going on. If anyone could tell me why the 64bit live USB is not working, it would be great as i'd like to get it up and running. The only thing i could think of was that i have downloaded the amd64.iso, and this is an intel machine. Having said that i see that all the sites on the web suggest that this shouldn't make a difference (if it does, where might i get an 64 bit version for intel). In addition i am not sure why, if this was the problem, my old celeron laptop brings up the error message while the new machine just hangs.

OpenSUSE Install :: GUI Will Not Load - Blank Screen On Live Boot

Jul 1, 2010

I have been trying to install openSUSE on a dell Latitude XT all day, and every time I tried to live boot, I got a blank screen. I finally decided to do a text install and I got it installed, but now I get the same result from booting off of the splash screen.

I can boot into text mode fine (still) but for whatever reason, it bombs as soon as I tell it to load the GUI. I have a 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 3GB RAM, and an ATI mobility chip (2000 series, maybe?) I had the same problem with Ubuntu, and since I like openSUSE just as well, I figured I'd try it because I at least could do a text install from my liveCD.

Fedora Hardware :: F15 Live CD Crashes Immediately On Amilo Notebook

Jun 20, 2011

I have a Fujitsu Amilo Pi 3525 notebook with 4 GB RAM and I am trying out Fedora 15 64-bit. When I boot from the CD, it reboots at the point where plymouth should exit and X should start. There are no obvious error messages from the console; it just reboots. Here is the hardware spec. for this laptop: [URL]

This notebook has been generally reliable and runs 64-bit Ubuntu without any problems. I am planning to test the CD in another host (although the media check did not fail) and at least try the 32-bit version (even though I know it can't address of the RAM). As experiences with Linux go, it feels a little early to hit a brick wall so early in the process.

Installation :: Black Screen With Blinking Cursor Immediately After Installing Ubuntu 8.10

Nov 28, 2008

I'm a fairly new linux user and I seem to have a problem with ubuntu 8.10 after installing it.To make sure everything was working fine before i could do a dual installation, i ran the live cd and it worked like a charm.Everything works fine in the live cd....the internet, sound, graphic drivers (even the special effects seemed to be work fine)I thought wow...after having a bitter experience with Ubuntu 8.04 and 7.10 (I couldnt install those at all coz of driver issues and stuff) I thought this is it!So I used the wubi installer to install ubuntu in my D drive (I didnt wanna use C just to be safe as the primary OS is installed there). Gave it a healthy space of 15 gb. Finished the installation and the rebooted.I went inside Ubuntu which started doing its installation and copying of files and stuff. So far so good.....

And then once it finished its installation and copying of files (100 %), the screen went blank and i see a cursor blinking. I thought maybe its restarting and thats why it must be doing this.I wait for nearly 10 mins and nothings happening except for the cursor blinking on the black screen. I press the caps lock key to see if anything is processing. Nope. So i manually shut it down and then load ubuntu. It loads like 20-30%....rests for a while....and then it loads a bit (not completley)....after that it takes me to a command line asking me for my password and username.I enter those correctly. But it doesnt get me into the main GUI screen yet.

It shows me a lot of the this error msg:
-bash: /dev/null:Permission denied

I'm still in command line (or terminal to be precise). So i use 'startx' (something which i learned from my csci labs ) to start a new session. It showed signs of starting a new session (i can see the mouse pointer and stuff) and then poof....back to the command line again. So I shut it down and load it again in recovery mode. It shows signs of the same symptoms in the splash screen (going very slow after 20-30 % ) and then this time, before i'm asked for my username and password in the command line, it shows a lot of warnings: fake daemon running (or something like that) and i cant even use startx! So i didnt know what to do, uninstalled ubuntu and did a fresh installation (wubi and in the same D drive). Reboot. Install and copy files 100% and then a blank screen again with the dreaded cursor blinking. I still wait for about 10 mins and nothing yet happens. So I manually shut it down (again) and then load ubuntu and unsurprisingly i have the same problem as what i described before....doesnt load properly and i'm not able to come out of the terminal.

I dont think its very safe to cut the power from the computer through the power button :/ I realize there are other posts regarding this, and I apologize if this is against the rules, I just thought maybe it would be appropriate to start a thread with this problem for 10.10 users

Fedora :: Mouse Flash While Vlc Is In Full Screen And Immediately Afterward Sound Gone

Nov 9, 2009

What happens is that the sound will disappear, either without any apparent reason, otherwise when I move the mouse, or pause vlc, or open up another application, in most cases FF. I have also seen the mouse flash while vlc is in fullscreen, and immediately afterward the sound is gone. When the sound disappears, the gnome-volume-control will disappear and reappear on the top taskbar. Also there will be no device under the hardware and input tab of the sound preferences when the sound disappears.

Killing and restarting the pulseaudio daemon from the cli will return the appropriate choices under sound preferences hardware/input tabs, as well as the audio. This could happen a couple of times in the period of an hour. Usually restarting vlc will solve the problem, or restarting the pulseaudio daemon. Another thing I have noticed is that I will occassionally have to kill the vlc process through the system monitor or cli, as closing vlc will not remove it from the taskbar. I have tried the fix shown here, to no avail. Using kernel 2.6.30.9-96.fc11.x86_64 on a hp dv3-2154ca.

General :: Bootloader Does Not Show Up Blank Screen?

My laptop screen goes blank right after the bios is loaded. Live CDs have no effect either.I installed arch linux to my whole HDD today. Last time I installed ubuntu linux to my whole HDD, the same problem happened. The way I fixed the problem last time was by formatting the HDD with an internal HDD dock and then installing windows with linux dual boot.As I do not want to go through the hassle by installing windows again, and I would be very delighted if anyone had an alternate way. I really want my laptop to be windows free!It seems to me that my laptop is somehow constructed to crash / go blank if no windows partition / boot loader is detected. I have no idea why they would do that, maybe you have a better explanation?

General :: Blank Screen With Proprietary ATI Driver

Jul 8, 2011

I would like to get better 3D performance, so I decided to try the proprietary ATI driver. The Arch Wiki page about it (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Catalyst) isn't very helpful, I don't really understand it. It mentions different packages and something about some kernel modules, with no explanation at all about what they do and very poor instructions on how to use them.

I just tried installing "catalyst-daemon" from the AUR, but it just gives me a blank screen when I start X. Nothing happens when I try to use Ctrl+Alt+F2, and nothing happens when I try to blindly log in and enter "shutdown -r now" (I ended up pressing the Reset button). I uninstalled it (everything still worked fine as long as you don't start X), and now everything's back to normal.

Fedora Installation :: Install Software Crashes Immediately After Select US English On First Screen

Mar 15, 2010

When I attempt to install the OS on my PC, the install software crashes immediately after I select US-English on the first screen. I'm copying the entire error report below. My system is configured as follows: Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard with 4G RAM. (FYI, I'm using the 32-bit LiveCD just because I may need a 32-bit OS for some purposes. I know this means I may not be able to use all of my RAM.) There are 3 500G hard drives connected to the computer. /dev/sda and /dev/sdb are RAID-1 mirrors via the on-motherboard ICH9R RAID chip. The logical partitions show up as /dev/dm-1, /dev/dm-2, /dev/dm-3, /dev/dm-4, and /dev/dm-5. When I type `fdisk -l`, I can see sda, sdb, and dm-* all separately. (I can provide the full output of `fdisk` if anybody wants to see it.)

/dev/sdc is a standalone drive without RAID.

I want to install Fedora on /dev/dm-2 with swap on /dev/dm-5. Currently, /dev/dm-1 and /dev/sdc2 each contain a separate installation of WinXP. I suspect the problem is with detecting RAID, thus I have deleted most of the error report that doesn't seem to concern storage detection.

I think I followed the directions here correctly, but all I get is a blank white screen after I login.
