General :: Blank Screen When Running StartX After Installing Updates
Feb 8, 2011
I'm running RHEL 5 on a dell server. Recently, after some updates were installed, the server hangs when trying to start the gui (its set to run level 5)to get into the login screen. I can boot into run level 3 but get the same issue when I startx. CTRL-ALT-BackSpace doesn't return me to the command prompt. I get a blank screen with two letters and a blinking cursor. Which direction or log files to look at to start the troubleshooting.
I recently installed ubuntu(32-bit 10.04) alongside windows 7 in my hp laptop(64-bit).When i installed all the updates available and restarted, a blank screen came after i chose to boot ubuntu. On pressing the power button, ubuntu closing animation appeared & it shut down.Is it because of my hardware drivers not supporting some updates.Do I have to re-install ubuntu..if yes, how do i remove it?..is deleting the ubuntu partion ok..how should i know which updates can be installed..also, are there any problems in running 32-bit version on a 64-bit laptop?
Just installed CentOS 5.5 in text mode because the GUI mode keeps hanging midway installation. The text mode installation worked sucessfully but when the installation finished and rebooted the system i got the localhost login thing which i typed root and provided my password, logged in successfully but then the cursor was just blinking waiting for the next command, i then typed startx but immidiatelythe screen goes blank and hangs. I guess the problem has to do with vga but i'm newbie and don't knw what next to do.
I downloaded the latest up dates and lost my GUI I used STARTX and it loaded the GUI I got a message saying something along the lines of there is a propitiatory driver for you video card would you like to use it I clicked yes it told me to log out and log back in.I did so and now STARTX doesn't work I have an ATI card.3 questions
1.how do I get it to load the GUI 2.how do I get it to boot straight to the GUI 3.how do I change my root password
i did yum -y install akmod-nvidia and then type xconfig-nvidia on the terminal, and after logging off i confront with a blank screen,so i remove akomd-nvidia [yum remove akomd-nvidia] and also yum erase xorg-x11-drv-nouveau [yum erase xorg-x11-drv-nouveau]but still no gui,i think i should install:
yum install kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 [but i didn't] so how can i have my gui back?
I have been installing these updates on Fedora 12 and so far, my computer now has 3 more fedora sub-versions "not sure if that IS their name". So when I first boot the pc, the 3 versions appear. Normally, that wouldn't seem like a problem "although I don't know why don't the new ones simply delete the old ones"..However, the new ones don't work. Only the oldest form which I installed through a CD is the one that works. The others just cause the computer screen to flash a couple of times and freezes.
and this morning's updates broke x. I get a blank screen instead of the login. I'm running an Nvidia 7900GS. I tried re-installing the Nvidia drivers... no good. I switched to the nv drivers and got further; I got the login screen, but when I try to log in it gives me the KDE splash screen and then takes me back to the login screen. I'm not sure what to try next.
I ran the latest updates this week (including the new kernel and the new kmod-nvidia update) and I got a blank screen when I rebooted. (I get the Fedora bar across the bottom of the screen, then after that the screen goes blank) I assume this is when the xorg server is trying to start..
I went into single user mode , backed up and then removed the xorg.conf file but still got a blank screen upon reboot.
I rebooted into single user mode, copied the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to a safe location, and then restored the system back to its original state.
I've since rsync'd my system back to where it was before the update.
I've posted this to the fedora mailing list with no response, my apologies if it's been addressed here...
I have an IBM Thinkpad with an Nvidia card ( nVidia Corporation GT218 [NVS 3100M] (rev a2) )
I currently have the nouveau driver black listed in my grub.conf setup: rhgb quiet nouveau.modeset=0 rdblacklist=nouveau
I did the update which installed/updated the following:
---> Package kernel.i686 0:2.6.35.14-95.fc14 set to be installed ---> Package kernel-devel.i686 0:2.6.35.14-95.fc14 set to be installed ---> Package kernel-headers.i686 0:2.6.35.14-95.fc14 set to be updated ---> Package kmod-nvidia.i686 1:280.13-2.fc14 set to be updated
However when I reboot the system boots to a blank screen, and even the previous kernel boots to a blank screen. I tried installing akmod-nvidia but get the same results
I've restored the system back to before the update for now..
So, I am having difficulty understanding what I need to do or if this can be done at all..
I would like to boot into the command line for my Linux system but, still have access to the different environments as well (KDE, GNOME, Enlightenment, etc) but I don't know how to do that using startx. that seems to only start KDE.
Can you use startx in some way to optionally start another environment? If not, can it be set up to start that graphical umm.. like start chooser screen? I don't know all the terms but its the screen that comes up that you enter your username/password and you can select which environment you like.
I recently downloaded Ubuntu and I have installed the software successfully on a Dell laptop at work, however when I tried to install it in my home laptop it fails the CD runs I get the Ubuntu load screen and then nothing. The CD stops running and I get a blank screen.I think it may be related to the screen driver, is there a way to see what is going on?
Im trying to install fedora 10 on the ps3 but i get a blank screen after the media test question, i tested the media in this case the CD and it says it has no errors but when it goes to install it switches to a blank screen and gets stuck. Can anybody help me, or tell me what im doing wrong. Steps that i taken.
1.Download the ppc version of fedora10. burn the ISO-image using the lowest possible setting. 2. i made a foder in my usb stick called PS3 and inside has another folder called otheros then inside it has the file otheros.bld 3. formatted the ps3 using the xmb. to 10 gigs for the other OS. 4. install Other OS using the usb stick that i made, install successful. 5. switch to other OS, using the XMB through systems settings. 6. Next I see a cd , i click on it with a mouse, see two penguins two options install 32 bit or 64 bit, i choose 64 bit. 7. then i get a media test question , choose skip and loads from CD. 8.Switches to blank screen and nothing else happens.
After struggling to install openSUSE 11.2 on my computer with ATI radoen graphics, I finally managed. Rebooting just after initial installation caused my laptop to give me a blank screen, no command prompt, nothing. With some help from the only post with such a problem on Ubuntu website and after first installation, I did the following:
1. Boot from Live cd of opensuse 11.2 2. Mount the partition which has root. 3. check for and delete Xorg
I'm trying to use the live cd on my HP Pavilion Entertatainment laptop, but I get a blank screen. The Ubuntu logo shows and I get to choose my language, but when I click on "Try Ubuntu without doing anything to your computer" (paraphrased) the screen goes blank. About a minute later I hear the Ubuntu music.
i installed fedora 12 on my pc and I also installed the ati drivers from atiand i rebooted and booted back in fedora all i get is a blank screen that does nothing
I have installed 11.2. When it starts to boot it runs through its startup and then all I get is a blank screen. I noticed in startup just before it says starting HAL it says CPU frequency not supported. I am assuming that this is the issue. I have run 11 and 11.1 on this box and have not had a problem with this. I have a P4 3.00 GHz with 2 GB of RAM.
I installed mesa-dri-drivers-experimental package using yum in Fedora 12. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450. After the reboot as soon as the fedora bubble fills up the screen goes blank with a blinking cursor. You can type in that black screen and do nothing else. When you press alt+ctrl+del a few services are stopped and the system is rebooted.
I installed OpenSuse Gnome version 64 bit on a HP laptop DV7 Intel Dual Core with nVidia 9600 GM cardAll went well, until after I had installed the nVidia drivers from this page: NVIDIA drivers - openSUSEI selected the Geforce 1-click install and Yast went on to installl all the packages (a lot of 32-bit),took about half an hour.I logged out/in, and could work as normal, until I rebooted. Maybe I waited not long enough (5 minutes), but the screen was blank, then I gave up.Anyone has an explanation. I can always re-install everything, but then what went wrong with the nVidia package
i installed fedora 12 on my pc and I also installed the ati drivers from ati and i rebooted and booted back in fedora all i get is a blank screen that does nothing
I created a Ubuntu Server 11.04 32 bit USB installer with the Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.4.4. I booted it up and get to the ubuntu install menu, were my first choice is "English" as language. Then I get to an installation menu were I proceed to "Install Ubuntu Server", but when doing so the screen just go blank and nothing happens. I've searched around for a solution but can't seem to find one.(Note: I've installed Ubuntu Server on other computers without facing this issue, so I don't know what went wrong this time.)
In installing Intel Fortran Compiler for Linux in my HP Laptop running on FC6,the rpm for debuger shows a dependency error for libXft.so.1. On searching in my system, foundlibXft.so and libXft.so.2. I downloaded and installed the rpm package "xorg-x11-libs- .8.2-37.FC4.49.2.1.i386.rpm"(rpm for FC6 was not found) with 'rpm -i' option. On rebooting Fedora, nothig displayed in monitor except few initiliation messages. I booted the system with FC6 installation DVD and tried to uninstall by mounting as 'chroot /mnt/sysimage' with 'rpm -e' command, but en error message comes as "error, the package 'xorg-x11-libs- .8.2-37.FC4.49.2.1.i386.rpm'is no installed". On booting from the system, i found the same problem.
I'm using a dell latitude d630 with an nvidia quadro 135M card. I'm able to suspend without any problems while running the X server. If I try to suspend on console without the X server running, the laptop wakes up to a blank screen. The screen remains blank and my only resort is to type sudo halt (with the screen off).I'm using the proprietary nvidia driver with the nvidia-kernel package on testing.
I left slackware 13 with airodumb and airplay executed in console for 6 hours. When I got back, konsole had something similar to "packet has length error". I could open the packet using aircrack -m option, but when i shut down the OS, it didnt shut down properly. Now when I do startx black window stays forever. I tried pkgtool and change to KDE but the same happens.
After applying the latest round of updates last night, I turned on my laptop this AM (ATI X1300 Mobility graphics running the default drivers), selected the latest kernel in GRUB, and waited to log in....only problem is that instead of seeing a normal loading screen (Blue with Fedora icon filling in), I instead get a black screen mostly covered in multicolored rectangles. I don't believe there was a graphics driver update, so I'm rather confused as to what went wrong/how to procede. I can still boot using a previous kernel.
Just finished wiping and re-installing F12 From a DVD on an Dell Inspiron 9300 with a NV 6800. The NVidia site driver refused to install, so I used the method documented here
[Code]...
as instructed to in the sticky. On rebooting, after the load animation, the screen goes blank/black. If I click around, I can hear some beeps from the OS so I assume that things are running but i just can't see anything.
I have installed Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 RC in my PC, everything works fine, but after install Nvidia proprietary Graphics driver it boot up on a blank screen (I can hear the login sounds, etc) but screen is absolutely black.
I try to login in recovery mode and check if something is wrong but nothing happens (even adding noveau driver to a blacklist (editing grub)) Now I have re installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 and works fine but I would like to install the 10.10 version, since I have this inconvenience, I cant do it.
My graphic card: Nvidia Gforce 8400GS 256MB Pci Express
I have recently got a new computer, and I have been trying to install openSUSE 10.3 on it. But, the screen will go blank and become unresponsive if I boot with the default options. When I switch to text mode, it boot and stops when it outputs time: pit clocksource has been installed. Switching to safe settings will make no difference. Right now, I am using openSUSE 11.1, but I'm not very happy with it, so I intend to replace it with 10.3. I'm not sure what the pit clocksource is, and can it be disabled, or some workaround?
