Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen When Booting With 10.04 - Amd64?
May 2, 2010I have a Asus A8N-E motherboard with AMD64 processor and NVidia 6600 GT graphics card.I downloaded the AMD64 version of 10.04 (the boot+live cd) and tried booting with it. After looking at the screen showing Ubuntu loading with 5 dots moving forward for about 5minutes, the screen went blank (not completely blank as power-off but a very dark grey color). I waited for about 10-15 minutes in this state but nothing happened.During this whole 10-15 min period the disk usage on the machine was high.Eventually, I just turned off the machine and booted into windows (which was already present on my machine) successfully.Is that blank screen for such a long duration a normal step during installation or was a different process expected?

Jan 19, 2011When I start my system on the Ubuntu 10.10 CDROM I get a tiny icon at the bottom, then the screen shuts off due to no signal. So I cannot run the Live CDROM. Relevant here is that Debian CDROM runs just fine. (Lenny installs and runs good, but squeeze does not) Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) gets me a pretty graphical welcome screen, then the monitor shuts off just like Ubuntu and Kubuntu.WinXP installed and runs without a hitch.
My system: Gigabyte GA-P43-ES3G with 4Gb ram, 750 Gb SATA HDD, Nvidia Quadro video card.I have gone through the BIOS settings looking for clues:SATA AHCI mode is set to IDE (versus AHCI)SATA port 0-3 native mode set to enabled (versus disabled which would be legacy IDE mode)Azalia codec set to auto (verus disabled)
General :: After Booting Logging Into The User A/c - Gives A Blank Screen With The Desktop Wallpaper
Jan 8, 2011I just put on my Linux PC now and after booting logging into the user a/c, it just gives a blank screen with the desktop wallpaper - no menu's or anything, so there's pretty much nothing I can do. I know I had removed the menu and replaced it with the dock (awn dock or something).
However, I can log in as root and root works fine (so I'm doing the update at the moment).
Coming back to my question, I used to know an Ubuntu command which I put in as sudo (terminal)and it used to work like a magic command which would literally restore and repair my linux installation - I even used it when I bought a new system and transferred my linux hard drive from my previous machine to the new one and this one command actually setup and prepared my linux installation to work smoothly in my new PC - just one command after connecting my h/drive in the new PC.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen: 10.04, ATI Radeon 9550 / X Tries To Load Screen Just Goes Blank?
May 9, 2010I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

Jan 11, 2011I had a problem with my system today when I came home and unlocked the screen and the single program I had left running had crashed and so did AWN, I restarted the system and it just goes to a blank screen just before it got to the login and does nothing. I reinstalled the system and reinstalled the ATI drivers downloaded from the ATI website just like I had previously (had problems with the Ubuntu drivers in the past) and rebooted the system and got the same blank screen... Now I'm on my second system reinstall of the night but haven't installed the ATI drivers yet, but I need them to set up my dual screen gig.

Aug 17, 2011I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop. I uninstalled, now I installed again. I used WUBI both times. This time, every time I boot, (after I select Ubuntu in the wubi and grub bootloaders) I get a blank black screen with a flashing _ in the corner. Then I get to the login screen and it works like normal. Are there any solutions for this? I'd sort of prefer to see the ubuntu logo and flashing dots.

Jan 4, 2010On this Lenovo netbook: I was playing with Firefox, came across a security.ubuntu.com problem, established in general terms what it was referring to and that it might be easier just to reinstall Ubuntu andupgrade to 9.04.Succesfully installed, it said, please to do a restart. But the screen is blank. Now, all I have is a totally dark screen whether booting off the hard drive (it starts running and clicking, then stops clicking; staysrunning 'til I switch off again) or via the external CD drive (which lights up, flashing, for a few moments while clicking, then runs down).
I've tried the Ubuntu CD which originally installed ok, and also the one from which I'd first installed Ubuntu instead of XP.I wondered if I'd inadvertently switched off the screen, but apparentlynot - in any case, presumably it would default to On? I've also looked forsomething on an external screen, I know that works because I played with
it a few weeks ago. fn-F" to toggle the screen doesn't do anything, nor fn-up/down to change brightness. I've just tried ctrl-alt-backspace, with CD and HDD, to no effect.
The battery's fully charged but in any case I'm using the psu and alllights are correctly lit. I've reseated the CD leads several times to besure.I've never networked it to the desktop - it had seemed a good idea to keep them separate so only one gets broken.
Ubuntu :: Computer Not Booting To GUI - Get Blank Screen With Cursor?
Jul 5, 2011several months ago I installed Maverick and it worked well, but eventually I lost the GUI. I fiddled with it to no avail. So I decided to do the Natty upgrade and it ended up not fixing the problem though I am able to boot to graphics safe mode.
I popped on this forum and a couple others but got little response and ran out of fiddle time. SO now I have a little time to mess with this, and I REALLY want to move back over to Ubuntu so if any one is familiar with that could be the issue

It brought me to a screen saying things like live is default press tab for more options etc and when I just press enter, the screen turns white, loads a few things, then it turns blank and after awhile, I hear the Ubuntu startup sound but my screen remains blank.

Jun 3, 2010I am trying to put FC12 on a new Dell E6410 (laptop) with video "00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 0046 (rev 02)". I used the Live disk and successfully installed, but then I updated. Thereafter when I boot I get a black screen. I cannot even get to the login.
Unfortunately I really do not know where to start to try to trouble shoot. (I can get into run level 3 on the latest kernel). Also the issue seems to come about from kernel 2.6.31.5 to kernel 2.6.32.12 since the blank screen issue does not arise in the former. For now I switched the order of these kernel in GRUB so the older one boots first and this seems to work.
Although the blank screen is my most pressing issue, I am having others too (synaptic mouse, wifi, suspend, internal camera). Well, hopefully once I can run the newest kernel these issue will disappear.
OpenSUSE Install :: Booting After 11.3 Install - Hangs At A Blank Screen ?
Jun 8, 2011I recently tried to upgrade my openSuSe 11.1 system using the instructions at:

I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?
Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Image Not Loading - Flash Screen On Blank Screen
Dec 26, 2010Is there a known problem with the Lubuntu 10.10 image here? I have downloaded it to two different computers, then burned the images to two different blank CD's (different brands) and neither loads. Both only get as far as the Lubuntu menu, once ENTER is pressed at that point to load the LiveCD, a blank screen eventually appears with a flashing cursor at the upper left of the screen, that's it. They were both burned using the slowest burn speeds available.

Dec 22, 2010I have been running 10.04 quite successfully, when I upgraded to 10.10, I have a problem with the newer kernels. If I let it boot into the latest one 2.6.35-23, I get the Ubuntu 10.10 splash screen for a second then a blank screen, same with 2.6.35-22. I have to run with 32-25 to get it to load the gui.
I have an AMD Sempron 2800, 1.6GHz pc, but I'm not sure if it's running 64bit.
Ubuntu Installation :: Freeze/Blank Screen After Screen Off 11.04?
May 4, 2011I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 very smoothly for a while now. Decided to upgrade to 11.04 - managed to corrupt the hard disk the first time by letting the laptop hibernate part of the way through but reinstalled from a live CD of 11.04 and it's now working except for this issue.
If I shut the screen on my laptop (or press the screen off button) either the screen won't come back on or it will but frozen (I can move the mouse but not click on anything etc.) In this state music continues to play (from spotify under wine) and if I press my hibernate shortcut (power button) the computer hibernates, only to wake into the same situation. I've got a Dell Latitude D520, upgraded to a bigger hard disk and more ram - the ubuntu partition has 50gb. Windows is working fine.
Edit: I noticed a sticky thread which includes something about a blank screen but I think this is a different issue?
Ubuntu Installation :: Booting - Screen Froze After The Splash Screen
Jul 21, 2010I received the Ubuntu CD by mail the other day and tried to install a dual boot with it. I first tried it out by running from the CD and the first problem I had was the screen froze after the splash screen. So I lurked around for a bit and found out that I can press any key on the screen with the keyboard and person to get to a different screen. At this screen I entered "F6" and then entered "nomodeset", this allowed me to pass the splash screen.
Next, I got into Unbuntu but I found out that the keyboard and mouse weren't working, so I lurked again and found out that I have to enter "noacpi" (sorry if I got that wrong, I forgot the name ). I ran by CD once more and everything worked, so I decided to finally install it next to my Vista. However, after installing it goes straight to the splash screen, and the freezing happens again. The screen where the keyboard and the person are not showing up so I have no idea how add the "nomodeset" and "noacpi". So my question is, how do I get to the screen where I can add both those things? Also, is there a way to add it permanently so I don't have to keep pressing F6?

Jul 19, 2010So finally decided to upgrade the desktop (dual-booting with Windows 7 for games) from 9.10 (fresh install awhile ago, never did anything with it) to 10.04 - upgrade went fine, reboot, watch grub go by, and voila. Blank screen.
Things I tried in grub:
add 'xforcevesa'
add 'xforcevesa' & remove 'quiet splash'
add 'nomodeset' & remove 'quiet splash'
add 'nomodeset xforcevesa' & remove 'quiet splash'

I was hoping to test out Windows 7 in a VM, see how far I could get for GPU acceleration there - I'd much rather not run Windows on the bare iron for that machine, but if I can't get this fixed I have no option :-/

Sep 11, 2015I have an system that d8.2 appears to install correctly. On first (or subsequent) boot, I get the DB8 load screen, then a quick fsck, then nothing. I appear to have some sort of environment running as I can move a mouse pointer, but nothing else.
CTRL-ALT-F2 results in the mouse pointer vanishing, but nothing else. I expected to end up at the CLI.
I have tried different installs and options, always the same result. This machine ran an earlier version with issues.
Fedora Installation :: Blank Screen After Reboot?
Jan 26, 2009I was able to get Fedora 10 to run on VirtualBox. Since the system wouldn't let me set the resolution to anything bigger than 800 x 600, I decided to get the nVidia driver (I'm running the nVidia 8400m G). I did it through this guy's tutorial: [URL]... After rebooting, I see the loading bars and everything, but I get a blank screen with a cursor. After pressing ctrl+alt+F3, I was able to log in to the root and execute the "akmod builds the required kmod on bootup" under the "For GeForce 8 series" [URL]... After a reboot, I still get the same thing. Will I have to reinstall Fedora 10 and just not update the nVidia graphics drivers? I have a 20" monitor that has a resolution of 1600 x 1050 and I would really like to take advantage of that.

May 27, 2009Im trying to install fedora 10 on the ps3 but i get a blank screen after the media test question, i tested the media in this case the CD and it says it has no errors but when it goes to install it switches to a blank screen and gets stuck. Can anybody help me, or tell me what im doing wrong. Steps that i taken.
1.Download the ppc version of fedora10.
burn the ISO-image using the lowest possible setting.
2. i made a foder in my usb stick called PS3 and inside has another folder called otheros then inside it has the file otheros.bld
3. formatted the ps3 using the xmb. to 10 gigs for the other OS.
4. install Other OS using the usb stick that i made, install successful.
5. switch to other OS, using the XMB through systems settings.
6. Next I see a cd , i click on it with a mouse, see two penguins two options install 32 bit or 64 bit, i choose 64 bit.
7. then i get a media test question , choose skip and loads from CD.
8.Switches to blank screen and nothing else happens.

Feb 1, 2010I'm installing Koala here on a 250gb Sata drive. I am looking to dual boot with Win7. I've got a 80gb Win7 partition and the rest is unallocated so I can install Ubuntu on to it. If I try to install, I get to the manual partition screen and it's blank. From what I can tell, Ubuntu isn't recognizing my hard drive at all. When I boot into the liveCD and run gparted, it says no devices found. Also when I boot gparted from a cd I get the same thing. BIOS sees the drive fine and the drive boots into Windows fine.
When I run "sudo fdisk -l" I get nothing. I've tried several of the flags including all-generic-ide. Also tried removing dmraid.
Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Live CD Blank Screen
Feb 27, 2010I recently got a new laptop and am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on it. I have installed it on my two other computers without any problems, but there seems to be a hitch with my new one. So I boot up using the live CD and then am presented with the option to test Ubuntu or install it. If I choose either of these the screen just goes blank. If I go with the first option of testing Ubuntu before installing, I can hear the intro drumbeats but the screen is still blank.
I have searched in some forums and tried some people's advice, like pressing Ctrl+Alt+- or trl+Alt+Backspace to change the resolution and restart X windows, respectivley. But it doesn't seem to work.
I'll list my laptops specs just in case my problem has anything to do with them:

Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit
Intel Core i3 M 330 2.13GHz
