I'm trying to pick between the many online storage providers, and I'm a bit lost in trying to decide. I'm using Ubuntu (Karmic), so UbuntuOne is an option, but I've also heard good things about Dropbox and SpiderOak. Can anybody give me some advice on what the main differences are?

I'm looking for an offsite storage to backup a small collection of files, mostly documents, maybe around 2Gb total and encryption would be probably required. Nightly transfers would come from a Slackware 12.2 file server, but I can upgrade it to current version if needed.

My roommate has a slow ADSL provider, and i have a much faster cable connection. He has his own residential gateway, and as do i. The goal i am trying to accomplish is to share 2 printers (1 behind each residential gateway) and also files between computers on the different LAN segments, but not share ISPs or DHCP servers.
Thus far, i have configured my residential gateway's DHCP server to have control of the 192.168.1.0/24 network and his gateway's DHCP server controls the 192.168.0.0/24 network. We've got a Slackware 13.0 Linux box connected on the 192.168.0.0/24 network which currently just serves a web page and accepts e-mail for a domain. My knowledge of networking fails me here as I'm not sure what piece of equipment i would need to buy to solve this puzzle (bridge or router). I know iproute2 can do wonderful things on Linux, and i figure it would be easier to just shove a NIC or 2 in the Linux box and make it do what i need instead of buying more networking equipment.
I am trying to find out how to get the mobile broadband providers to appear on the network manager app, coz at the moment when i try to create a new mobile broadband connection the list of providers is empty.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a weird issue with source routing on a linux box.The plan goes like this:I have 2 internet providers at my office and i want to use a single router to route them both ( i don't need load balancing or failover). I just want access to either provider based on the ip i use on my pc. The first provider, let's call it RDS, is simple: i've got an RDS_IP, RDS_MASK and RDS_GW.The second provider is complicated, we'll call it INES. I have a INES_IP, INES_MASK, INES_GW and they also gave me a subnet of public ip's: ILAN_NET which i have to route myself through INES_IP.I also have a third nic with an local ip: LAN_NET and an alias for the INES subnet: ILAN_NETthe router has dhcp enabled, giving by default ip's from LAN_NET and using the default gw, RDSI have snat for the LAN_NET to go through RDS.

I am trying to do the cluster storage with the Rock Cluster storage operating system . I have install the rock cluster on the main server . and I want to connect the client with the PXE boot . when I starting the client then it boot from the PXE boot into the mode of compute node. but it ask the where is to be stored the I have give the path..then server says that not able to find the directory path.
Steps:-
1) insert-ethers
2) client is started with the PXE boot.
3) it detects the dhcp .
4) At last it demand where is to be started by cd-rom, harddisk ,nfs etc.
then I started with the nfs and I have given the lanIp of server.and server is detecting the client but client is not finding the filesystem directory. into export partition directory but it is not taking path.
PATH:-
/export/rock/install it is not finding this path then it is not able to start the o/s from PXE boot..Is there any solution and manual of rock or anyother solution then u can reply to me...
Somewhere out there there has to be someone that can help me set up my lamp server to send automated emails using my cable providers SMTP server

I used Dells open manage software to rebuild the RAID which was successful although I cannot see the additional storage when I look on the system. Basically how do I get Linux to show the new storage and then add it to an existing partition.

But doesn't give me any details of my actual flash drive that I have bought.
My Ubuntu 10.04 does not pick up my mp3 player via the usb port. The usb ports are working fine, picking up my storage device etc but when I plug in the mp3 player nothing happens, except that the device indicates that it is picking up power from the usb port. The device works fine on my other computer (Windows) and I tested it on another machine running on Ubuntu 10.04 where it picks up fine.

Here are the details:
I have a bash shell script that launches a Python program. The python program issues an external shell mysql -e command.
I don't want the python code to use use -u user-name -pMyPassword, db-name, because this is contained in ~/.my.cnf. The python code doesn't have to use these parameters if run interactively, but does have to if run from cron.
I received a CnMbook for xmas. It seems that I have connected WiFi to my home broadband is showing connected and an IP address, but when I try to browse it is saying that FireFox cannot find the server. Does anyone have any ideas about what I need to do to get online?

We are not a big company and I am trying to implement some sort of SAN or NAS to consolidate my storage.
I have a whole bunch of PCs that are not longer in use and are just collecting dust, I'm trying to (in case it is possible) to somehow put them all to work as a single unit and use their hard drives or add more hard drives, to create a Storage Area Network. Is it possible, using Linux or BSD, to achieve this goal. Are there any recommendations as to where to start with this? I am eager to learn new things, I have experience using BSD and GNU/Linux, I just want to know which direction to go in order to achieve my goal.
I am trying to disable USB storage from servers.What I did is as following1> modprobe -vr usb_storage2> blacklist usb_storageIt is working fine. But root can again load the module into the kernel. [ modeprobe -v usb_storage ] want to restrict this also. My requirement is not even root can access the usb storage.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm using centos 5.5,my problem is that i need to disable usb-storage in my machine.But i need usb mouse and usb keyboard to function properly.I have tried all the below mentioned methods,
1.Appending blacklist-usbstorage to /etc/modprobe.d/bl*
2.removing the *.ko file,which removes the usb-storage drivers.
3.Added the line, install usb-storage /bin/true to /etc/modeprobe.conf
The first mentioned method works partially.That is the usb port in the front panel of the cpu is gets disabled.But,when i insert it at the port behind the CPU, usb-storage(pendirve) mounts automatically,which should not happen.
NOTE:usb-storage have to be disabled only for normal-users
Is there any way to give password to the usb storage. means those who know the password can only use the pen drive!

I'm running an HP Pavillion ZV6000, AMD 64 Athlon.I think that I'm not getting wireless because it never really shuts down. I've tried shutting down from the term (what I was used to from Damn Small) and it drops the window manager and then freezes on the black screen . . . I then have to do a hard shutdown (holding the power button).I've tried making sure that I don't have a USB stick in . . . shutdown wireless moduals, still the same.I'm starting to forget my keyboard commands, being that I am having to use windows to get on-line . . . like now!

I've been a member of Linuxquestion for about 2 or 3 years mostly lurking.I have building/buying computers for 30 years, first DOS,Windows 3.1, then Windows 95 through all to Win7.My question is for security of online banking and other financial things. Everything.I've been reading on here indicates that no Antivirous/Malware is needed. Being new to Linux, I can't tell if ClamAV is working or if is even needed.I had thought about doing banking on my wife's machine(Windows only) rebooting to a Ubuntu LiveCD. Does this sound like a more secure idea? Our two other machines are both dual boot with Ubuntu alongside of Windows XP & Windows 7.
