General :: Online Banking Security
Jun 3, 2011
I'm new to Linux(Ubuntu 11.4), just installed it two weeks ago. I've been a member of Linuxquestion for about 2 or 3 years mostly lurking.I have building/buying computers for 30 years, first DOS,Windows 3.1, then Windows 95 through all to Win7.My question is for security of online banking and other financial things. Everything.I've been reading on here indicates that no Antivirous/Malware is needed. Being new to Linux, I can't tell if ClamAV is working or if is even needed.I had thought about doing banking on my wife's machine(Windows only) rebooting to a Ubuntu LiveCD. Does this sound like a more secure idea? Our two other machines are both dual boot with Ubuntu alongside of Windows XP & Windows 7.

With the ever increasing threat of financially aimed malware on Windows machines(think Zeus here), I'd like to create a distro of Linux that boots from a USB thumb drive and opens directly to a web browser. I'd like this distro or config not to be writable and its only purpose being to make financial transactions via a web browser. All other services or applications would need to be stopped or locked down.I've seen some threads on here from a few years back and wanted to know if there is anything new out there that can assist with this.

I'm trying to do an online security check on my Linux system.I would like to do a Firewall/Antivirus test. What free online sites do you know?For instance, I use ShieldsUp to test some firewall's components.Does someone recommend anything else?I still can't find a site that tests for the presence of virus/malware installed.Are there any?

After entering username & password the browser is continuously loading but there is no network activity and the page won't load.I am running 64bit Lucid and have this problem with the latest versions Firefox, Chromium and Opera.There is no problem with Windows XP installed on the same machine. This is not the solution I want to follow however

Currently using linux mint.While it's nice I have the feeling all those bells and whistles must be exposing a large attack surface. What is the most secure distro known to man, but which is still capable of making payments to amazon and ebay?

As soon as I get the hang of remastering, I am planning to remaster my distro (I have MEPIS 8 now, but will switch to either 9 or 11) to do two things: install KDE Trinity (I don't like KDE 4), and remove all extraneous software: games, "toys," and specialized programs that it was peculiar to include on the liveCD in the first place (such as jbidwatcher, a program for monitoring eBay bids). Oh, and I'll try to make it fit into one CD (not one DVD). Since I don't like downloading DVD-sized distros in the first place ( DVDs cost more!), I might download the latest antiX MEPIS and modify it to my liking.
If I successfully remaster a new version of MEPIS to my specifications, I might as well try to share it online in case anyone would want it. Where would I upload a Linux distro to share it?

I'm trying to pick between the many online storage providers, and I'm a bit lost in trying to decide. I'm using Ubuntu (Karmic), so UbuntuOne is an option, but I've also heard good things about Dropbox and SpiderOak. Can anybody give me some advice on what the main differences are?

i'm trying to run a server for a game, that requires a few ports open (*since i connect to the internet with a router); for example one of the ports that needs to be open is "8888". But i tryed opening it thru my router localhost and it doesn't work (d-link DIR-400), so i was thinking if there's any way to open the ports of the router directly from Ubuntu; maybe console or program?for example for windows there's (Smart Port-fowarding) wich opens the ports you want without goint thru the router page.

I've got a bit of tricky situation with a Red Hat box, our network uses a proxy server to connect to the internet. I've exported its address using "export http_proxy=http://usernameassword@server_iport" and to test I ran a wget against www.google.co.za and got a response, but using elinks to connect to google gives a proxy requires authentication error. It cant possibly be the credentials as wget can connect. I've confirmed that the proxy was exported by running "env | grep -i proxy", I also tried appending that line on both "/etc/profile" and/or "/root/.bash_profile" with no luck. one other thing I noticed is that passing those arguments directly to elinks works, not only this but "ssh -X server_ip_address" then running firefox& and giving it the proxy address also works. Is the any other way to make this line global, meaning to tell all applications that require internet connection to use the proxy? The server is sitting at a remote location and I only have access to a shell.

I am writing my own anacron script that backs up my most important files from my laptop to my office pc regularly using rsync. However, sometimes my laptop is on when anacron starts the back-up job but my laptop is offline, so that it cannot rsync with my desktop. Is it possible to tell anacron to re-schedule the task to either the next time I'm online again or to some later date (preferably not the next scheduled time, but some time before)?

use a Live CD of Ubuntu to do all my financial transactions online, I figure thats the safest way since any virus/trojan cannot infect the Live CD?Just one question, how safe is it to use Linux as a whole for this kind of use?(I mean, Linux and all the apps are open source and written by just about anybody, so how can I be sure that even the Ubuntu Live CD doesnt have any sort of keylogger etc installed? After all, with so many lines of code, I'm sure someone could have sneaked in something like that?)

My root partition was filling up, with only 500 mbs left, I wanted to resize my root partition from 20 Gb to 40Gb
So I resized my partition by using these steps:
Using Gparted to resize another partition to give space for the EXT4 Using fdisk, deleting the root partition (on /dev/sda2), and creating it again using the new size resize2fs /dev/sda2 Updating grub2
But now the problem is that although I can boot in my new partition and the new partition shows it is 40Gb, but the free size was still 500mb. So I booted from a LiveCD and checked with e2fsck -p /dev/sda2, it reported clean. So I added the -f flag (force check), still, the drive is full.
