General :: Cannot Add See New Storage

Aug 16, 2010

I have just added 2 146gb disks to an existing RAID5 system running Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.4. I used Dells open manage software to rebuild the RAID which was successful although I cannot see the additional storage when I look on the system. Basically how do I get Linux to show the new storage and then add it to an existing partition.

Ubuntu Servers :: Mainboard And Storage System - How Both Storage Devices Will Be Supported By Debian

Mar 11, 2011

I'm interested in buying a new hardware for my company. The old server (now 10 years old) should be replaced with a new one. Till now, I was looking on different hardware suppliers, boards and different other places. I found a Tyan board [URL]. The hardware spec is quite interesting and the board would fullfill our claims.

how both storage devices will be supported by Ubuntu or Debian??

- SATA-Controller: AMD SP5100

General :: Using To Unify Or Consolidate Storage?

May 5, 2010

I apologize if this email is out of place, but I have the following personal project and I have been searching over the internet to try to find the best possible solution. We are not a big company and I am trying to implement some sort of SAN or NAS to consolidate my storage.

I have a whole bunch of PCs that are not longer in use and are just collecting dust, I'm trying to (in case it is possible) to somehow put them all to work as a single unit and use their hard drives or add more hard drives, to create a Storage Area Network. Is it possible, using Linux or BSD, to achieve this goal. Are there any recommendations as to where to start with this? I am eager to learn new things, I have experience using BSD and GNU/Linux, I just want to know which direction to go in order to achieve my goal.

General :: Disable Only Usb-storage In Centos 5.5?

Dec 26, 2010

I'm using centos 5.5,my problem is that i need to disable usb-storage in my machine. But i need usb mouse and usb keyboard to function properly.I have tried all the below mentioned methods,

1.Appending blacklist-usbstorage to /etc/modprobe.d/bl*

2.removing the *.ko file, which removes the usb-storage drivers.

3.Added the line, install usb-storage /bin/true to /etc/modeprobe.conf

The first mentioned method works partially. That is the usb port in the front panel of the cpu is gets disabled. But,when i insert it at the port behind the CPU, usb-storage(pendirve) mounts automatically, which should not happen.

NOTE:usb-storage have to be disabled only for normal-users

General :: External Storage Back Up Failure?

Jun 23, 2011

As part of our back up strategy we back up data to two external strorage devices (NAS buffalo linkstation) via a cron job. Recently I noticed that the linkstation backups were not working and the server (via the terminal) complained about CIFS write error or something along these lines. I decided to reboot the server and this fixed the problem for one week for one of the linkstations and for a few weeks for the other linkstation.

There are no error messages this time on the server or on any of the logs that I have checked but the backups are not being made and the processes are still running for the days that backups have not been made.

the backups used to work everyday without fail until recently and no changes have been made to the script that does the backup..

i have a spare computer and 4 hds and was planning to make this computer a storage server with a media place aswell... i do have some linux knowledge but never used it for this and am not sure how good it will be initially the media files are in an HD with ntfs format which i want to keep as is... but i was wondering what options i had to make a media folder over network where i could browse and watch from any computer in my network ? is it samba my only options or is there a more media like solution for this ? There will aswell other features i was planning to use on it which made me think of linux, for example, svn server, websever with mysql to testing my applications, connection manager, all these i am sure on how to make and setup... but i am not very familiar with samba hence i am not sure if it is the best options for file sharing aswell as media sharing and/or my only option.i also heard that ntfs might be trouble some for linux in some cases

General :: Clean /var Storage On Dedicated Server?

Feb 4, 2010

The /var directory is 97% full on my dedicated server:

I would like to know if it is safe to clear it and how to clear it (assuming it will not disrupt/kill server services to do so).

I have Matrix control panel so i can view the storage etc but it does not have an way of clearing the /Var directory.

I have Putty Access to root but do not know which command to use.

I found a few threads but the information is not clear to me as there seems to be an assumption of basic knowledge I don't yet have.

My linux/ubuntu support that usually does this kind of thing for me is away and not contactable and my server is grinding to a halt and unable to store/send email.

I have only a very basic understanding of command line but really need to get this sorted ASAP.

General :: Filesystems - File System For Removable Storage?

Apr 7, 2011

I have a 500GB external drive I want to use on a couple of Linux systems, and looking for a filesystem for it. External drives are frequently formatted in FAT32, but I don't need to interoperate with Windows and would rather avoid the ugly limited kludge that is FAT.

Since I only need to use it on Linux, I would use ext4 or XFS, but they store ownership information. Ideally, I'd use a proper Unix file system that doesn't track ownership (files are owned by whoever mounts the device, like they are when mounting a FAT32 partition), but I do not know of any file system that does that. What would be a good file system for this disk?

General :: Mounting Mobile Phone's Mass Storage?

Feb 23, 2011

I have a problem when trying to mount a memory card in my cell phone. I connect the phone with an USB cable, select mass storage as the phone prompts it, but no luck.

dmesg shows

Code:
[ 200.673190] usb 3-1: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4
[ 200.823377] usb 3-1: New USB device found, idVendor=05c6, idProduct=1000
[ 200.823386] usb 3-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3

[Code].....

Just to be sure I tried the same thing with FreeBSD, though I knew from past experiences what to expect from it. It just worked(tm) flawlessly, but I'd rather not keep FreeBSD just for the sake of one device I can't seem to get working with Linux. All I can guess it must either be a kernel bug that has persisted for far too long or a faulty udev rule.

General :: Handle Bad Block In Mass Storage Device?

Nov 2, 2009

* I am implementing mass storage device on a test board.

* It contains NAND flash.

* Using corresponding "udc driver" and "g_file_storage" I could make my test board enumerate as mass storage device on my Linux machine.

* my 16 MB pen drive (test board) is now ready for read/write.

But there are some Bad Blocks on the NAND.Hence copy is not complete. Although on Linux machine there is no error message. Now , what is there in a normal pen drive which manages the Bad Block or what am I missing so that such Bad Blocks are managed.

Here is the error I get on my test board :

General :: RHEL5 Multi-host Shared Storage ?

Mar 4, 2010

Ive been asked to investigate presenting the same SAN LUN to two or more RHEL5 hosts. The hosts are providing independent applications so theyre not clusters from an application perspective. The shared storage location would be used as a common area for imports/exports. Were hoping to reduce file transfer times between the hosts by eliminating the need to copy the files between two storage locations. Some of our hosts run Advanced Server and some are standard. Is there a file system that I can use that will allow multi-host access without running advanced server with clustering services on all hosts?

General :: Win Storage Server 2k8 Share To OpenSUSE 10.3 - NFS Preferably

Jul 20, 2010

My Goal: I'm migrating data from the OpenSUSE server to the 2008 Storage Server. The idea is that all the data will reside on the 2008 Storage Server in an NFS share which will be mounted to the OpenSUSE server in the same location in which the data sat in initially.

I'd like this to be completely transparent to everyday use -- all programs designed to interact from a few other servers / computers will still work without modification, and, more importantly, all file permissions can remain the same. As far as I've seen the SMB mounting doesn't full preserve the *nix file permissions. I'm hoping the NFS mount will, but please tell me if I'm wrong. SMB is so much more straight-forward and already working. I should also note speed is a giant plus for NFS.

The Players:
Windows Server 2003 - The Active Directory server
Windows Storage Server 2008 - The new file server
OpenSUSE 10.3 - The workhorse server

I have no control over the operating system choice. I have no control over the AD server. I have limited, intermittent access to the person who does have full control of the AD server. I have full control over the file server and the workhorse server.

What I've done: The Storage Server is running Services for Network File System (NFS). It has a 6.5ish TB RAID partition configured for NFS and Samba/CIFS sharing which is used for the data storage. The Samba/CIFS share is mountable and accessible, but I haven't found a way to maintain proper user permissions on the files. When I connect the owner and group for every file is root:root, which led me to NFS in hopes this would fix the problem.

The AD server admin has installed Services for Unix, and we imported the OpenSUSE passwd and group file. Either this didn't work, or it take a bit more configuration. Tomorrow morning we're going to take a deeper look into the SFU configuration with the AD.

Right now I can mount the NFS share on the OpenSUSE under the root account:

Command results truncated to what I think is relevant info. Ask if you need more.

Code:

My Problems:

I'm hoping the "Permission denied" error is solely because the UID and GID mappings are incorrect. I have, however, tried to create an NFS share with full permissions to "Everyone" and anonymous access, and I get the same results.

Also I've run into another roadblock. Why do non-root accounts fail to execute the mount /mnt/datadir command?

Code:

AFAIK 1048 is not a restricted port, so regular users should have access to bind to the port. I also have a Gentoo machine where regular users are allowed to execute the command. The 'mount' command shows that the NFS share was mounted with the username executing the command too.

Server NFS Config:

Code:

The following are the settings on localhost

The above was written yesterday and not posted in hopes I could solve the problem this morning. I failed.

Update: The domain admin installed an NIS server on the AD server. I installed an NIS server on a Gentoo Linux box. They weren't able to communicate. The Linux box thought the Windows NIS service wasn't running and Windows couldn't find the Linux machine. NIS led to a dead-end right about there. I also tried to manually link the user accounts to UNIX UIDs via the AD user properties window to no avail.

General :: External Hard Drive - Poor Man's Hybrid Storage?

Mar 2, 2010

Hybrid Storage harddisks use a large non-volatile cache to save power and improve speed. I wanted to ask if there's a reasonably simple way to simulate that under Linux. Ideally there would be a FUSE-filesystem that does this, For now this is purely theoretical, but my setup would be a small home server (Sheeva Plug) with an external USB harddisk that goes to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity. To keep it powered down as long as possible, I would like to use a 16GB SD card as a cache for the harddisk, thus simulating Hybrid Storage.

The only possible solutions I found thus far were Hierarchical storage management packages for enterprise use, which are way too expensive for this task.
