Slackware :: Recommend An Online Storage Service?

May 6, 2011

Can anybody recommend an online storage service that works with Linux and preferably Slackware? Free would be nice but a small monthly fee is ok too. I'm looking for an offsite storage to backup a small collection of files, mostly documents, maybe around 2Gb total and encryption would be probably required. Nightly transfers would come from a Slackware 12.2 file server, but I can upgrade it to current version if needed.

Slackware :: Can't Drag 'n Drop Into Usb Storage?

Jan 27, 2010

Using xfce. I plug in my USB storage device and try to 'drag 'n drop' copy from home File Manager window and the USB disk window and immediately get a "Permission Denied" window. I check permissions and all seem ok. All users have read/write privileges to USB disk. I can even use terminal and cp from home to /media/disk/<what ever>. I can even create a new USB disk folder using the file manager menu. Just can't drag 'n drop between manager windows.

Networking :: Can't Get Slackware Online With New Modem

Apr 5, 2010

A couple of months ago, I replaced a broken down modem for my DSL connection. I've learned time and again that Verizon is completely of no help to Linux customers, and so any problems I ever experience, I''m pretty much on my own. These days, I am running no windows whatsoever. Previously, when I got a new modem I would run verizon's windows software to set up the modem for DHCP, and then any distro I chose to run wo0uld connect automatically.

Well, without the ability to run windows, it's a lot more problematic. I have only managed to get some debian-based distros online by running an application called pppoeconf or pppoe-config. No slackware, and since a few months ago I released my own live CD that's based on Slax, this is embarassing and frustrating to say the least. DNS, pppoe, TCP/IP... this is not my thing.

Now I've got Slackware 13 installed, and I've been running netconfig and pppoe-setup, and according to the results I get when I run pppoe-status, I should be online :

And here is where I was supposed to have posted the results of my non-error messsage, but I don't seem to have saved it from the last time I was loggen into slackware. Looks like I'll have to do it again

Slackware :: Home Partition As Storage Area

May 18, 2011

I have a fairly large home partition, and several directories with content in, that currently reside in my home account.I now have two slackware installs and would like the content to be available to both installs. Is it OK/advisable to make a directory in /home that has the content in, that both user accounts are mapped to for the content (music and video mainly)? I was thinking of setting the folder as readable/writable by all. This bit makes me wonder if I might encounter problems. There is no spare partition or alternative drive that I could use for this purpose and there is too much data for me to duplicate it in both user accounts.

Slackware :: 13.1 64bit With Intel Matrix Storage Manager

May 14, 2010

I've been using Slackware 13.0 32-bit because of a problem supporting RAID 0 metadata for Intel Matrix Storage Manager. I would like to move to 64-bit with Slackware 13.1 but I can't see any way to use a 64-bit kernel with my RAID setup. Because the "mdadm" in Slackware does not support the "-e imsm" option to read Intel Matrix Storage Manager Metadata I have been using "dmraid". Unfortunately I'm having trouble finding a way to make "dmraid" (a 32-bit application) work on 64-bit Linux. It appears that "dmraid" may be unsupported now, and I can't find a good place to get current source to compile on a 64-bit system. Essentially "dmraid" is only a program to interpret metadata and then configure the standard Linux device mapper to set up the required mirror or stripe mapping. So, it actually does not have to interact directly with the kernel.

I believe it only issues I/O requests to read disks and configure "dm" devices. So far I have not had to rebuild "dmriad" since Slackware 10. I don't know if 32-bit libraries are an option, or if those can be added to an initrd image (required to use dmraid before booting). People claim that "mdadm" will work with Intel Matrix Storage RAID 0 but I have never found any detailed information about how to do that. When I've tried the few examples I've run across on Slackware I just get an error that the "imsm" metadata format is not supported. I have not been able to locate a site to browse Slackware packages. I was hoping to find "dmraid" in the 64-bit packages. I think "dmraid" was at one time in Slackware but perhaps not any longer.

Slackware :: Building Packages, Not Running An Alternate Operating System Or A Service Such As Ssh?

Mar 25, 2011

I have been playing with chroot to build packages.I am wondering about the limits or caveats of using chroot to mix operating systems. For example, what should I beware if I use 12.2 and chroot a 13.1 system? Or if I use 13.1 and chroot a 12.2 system? After all, the chroot does inherit some attributes of the parent system. There is the noticeable difference of kernel versions. For that one reason I'm thinking that mixing system versions might be frustrating.

My focus is building packages, not running an alternate operating system or a service such as ssh. I realize that building packages as root in a chroot potentially compromises security but that is not my focus.I am aware that a chroot is not a true virtual system.A virtual machine is an option, but in this thread I'm curious about the limitations of chroot. I find building packages in my virtual machines much slower than actual hardware, even with a dual core. Hence my interest in chroot

(Reinstalling Linux distros is just so much fun lol).Anyways, I'm currently running my KDE 4.4 Suse desktop and would like to know what some of you guys have for customizations. I'd like to make my computer real nice with cool themes, icons, widgets and whatever else I can change.

So please, just respond to this thread if you have done any customizations, simple or complex, and let us know how you like it and possibly how you did it! I'd love to hear all of your guys' feedback and look forward to all of the responses. I appreciate all of your time!

Hardware :: Recommend A PCI Wireless N Card?

Jul 2, 2011

For as long as I've used Linux I've had trouble getting my wireless connection to work properly. I've tried about 4 different cards and now I'm using D-Link DWL G510 which even says Linux supported on the box. It installed right out of the box and when I have a connection it is fast enough; not as fast as the other computers, laptops, tablets or phones but reasonably fast.

The connection is however unstable and I often have no connection at all. It very strange actually because as time goes it seems to get more unstable, both since boot-up and since fresh install. I'm tired of this and since we got a new router which support wireless N I can just as well get a new card. Can you recommend any? It needs to be able to handle WPA-encryption.

General :: Recommend For A New User To Read?

Feb 20, 2011

This is my first post and there probably will be many more. I've used linux before for short periods but never really tried to learn it. I've decided that I want to study linux and learn as much as I can about it. I dont hate windows or OSX but I really like problem solving and using the command line. Which I used to love with DOS.

I'm going for a complete career change so I want to get certified in Linux by taking the LPI test so I can show employers that I have some computer certification(In Japan it really helps). Now, I'm studying commands and trying to do simple tasks(just playing now) but want to get into it more.

Question: What books do you recommend for a begginner with just dos and windows problem solving experience to start learning linux? Also, what programing language should I pick up a bit for linux?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Recommend Media Transfer App?

Nov 30, 2009

Can anyone recommend an easily usable media transfer application? That is, I want to copy audio files from my CDs, compress them if possible, perhaps organize & store them on disk, and transfer the ones I want to listen to to a media player. (Currently a Zen Vision:M).

The basic problem (there seem to be lots of ramifications) I've had with Creative's software and the Windows media player is that there doesn't seem to be any obvious way to sensibly organize the audio: it's all based on "albums", "artists", and "songs", where I listen to audio performances. So what I'd like to do is to copy say the two disks of Macbeth (which I can do, but it goes into about a dozen Track xxx files in a directory for each disk), somehow organize that into a unit that I can simply copy to the player and play from beginning to end. This seems to me to be a very basic sort of function, but nothing I've found will do it, at least in a way that I can discover.
