I am trying to disable USB storage from servers.What I did is as following1> modprobe -vr usb_storage2> blacklist usb_storageIt is working fine. But root can again load the module into the kernel. [ modeprobe -v usb_storage ] want to restrict this also. My requirement is not even root can access the usb storage.
View 5 RepliesI'm using centos 5.5,my problem is that i need to disable usb-storage in my machine.But i need usb mouse and usb keyboard to function properly.I have tried all the below mentioned methods,
1.Appending blacklist-usbstorage to /etc/modprobe.d/bl*
2.removing the *.ko file,which removes the usb-storage drivers.
3.Added the line, install usb-storage /bin/true to /etc/modeprobe.conf
The first mentioned method works partially.That is the usb port in the front panel of the cpu is gets disabled.But,when i insert it at the port behind the CPU, usb-storage(pendirve) mounts automatically,which should not happen.
NOTE:usb-storage have to be disabled only for normal-users
I've got a problem with my 3G modem [Huawei E122].
It has internal storage and kernel assigns a device [/dev/sdX] to it.
Because of that, every second time my machine will not boot - kernel panic - as my usb hdd gets assigned /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sda.
I cannot use LABEL nor UUID in root= kernel parameter, as it is only available when using initrd, and I can't use it - I am using Debian on my router - mips architecture machine.
I have to prevent this from happening, as my router has to start everyday and I have to be sure it works ok. I don't have physical access to restart it when something goes wrong.
I don't use my modem internal storage, there's no SD card inserted. However kernel detects the reader and loads it.
I can not prevent loading od usb drivers since my hdd is on USB as well.
I'm interested in buying a new hardware for my company. The old server (now 10 years old) should be replaced with a new one. Till now, I was looking on different hardware suppliers, boards and different other places. I found a Tyan board [URL]. The hardware spec is quite interesting and the board would fullfill our claims.

I have one scsi storage array, JetStor SATA 416S,split into 2 halves. each is RAID5 12TB. Is it possible to dedicate each half to a different rhel5 server. I have "lsi22320-r" ultra230 dual channel scsi adapter in each server.
The first server sees the 2 halfs however the second server doesn't on the first server:
I would like to know a way to disable the usb storage capability of the clients computers on a LAN, running opensuse 11.2.
-- I tried the modprobe -r usb-storage , but nothing happend
-- I tried the nousb option when loading the kernel, it worked, but mouse which was connected through usb port was also disabled
-- Also there is no usb-storage.ko driver inside the /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop/kernel/drivers/usb/storage folder... there isn't the storage folder itself
is there a way or terminal command to disable access to a USB storage device upon insertion given that it is not permitted?

I work for a regional cell phone company, and have recently taken it upon myself to create some documentation that will aid our mobile broadband users with installation of the aircards we carry.I decided to start out with Ubuntu 9.10, and I am using a Novatel mc727. I set it up using the mobile broadband feature that is built in, but I am having a few problems. First I have noticed that once you get the connection created, if you try to edit the settings, an error pops up stating that you are not authorized to do so, before I even get a chance to put in the password. Its not really a big deal, and if it comes down to it you can always delete the connection and start over. However, I have noticed that with the card plugged in, sometimes it can take up to 15 minutes to be recognized as a connection. I got to thinking about it and figured it may have something to do with the fact that this card, and all the cards we carry are seen on windows as a mass storage device. So to test this, i left the card in and rebooted, and of course on reboot, the card was mounted and once i hit eject, it was seen as a modem right away.

I am running Fedora 12 OS on my machine. I would like to disable the USB devices for normal users so that usb-storage devices cannot be plugged in. However at the same time a mouse or a keypad may/could have a usb connection. note that root should be able to use the usb storage devices. How can the same be done on fedora 12? I would prefer not to do it via the BIOS options.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 1TB external HDD which I use to store my music library of roughly 40 gigs. Therefore I would normally import music directly from it to my Rhythmbox library while keeping everything stored on the removable drive. In recent versions of Rhythmbox this is no longer needed as the application integrates my external HDD into the side pane and lists the music automatically. This is great although when closing Rhythmbox and reopening it, the drive has to be scanned all over again. This is a huge pain when it has to scan through 40+ gigs of music.
Therefore I would like this feature disabled and removed from my side pane. It is not needed and causes quite a large annoyance. Either I want it removed or the ability to keep the index of music from the drive in Rhyrhmbox at all times. Achieving this would be fantastic and would switch me back to Rhythmbox. recently I have been using Exaile which I love but rhythmbox not working bugs me.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with Kvm. I've used a howto to configure my network. Seems to work fine, I've installed the Virtual Machine manager, when I go to create my Virtual Machine, I see the the image is automatically created in /var/lib/libvirt/images. I have a totally separate path for my images. How to I configure a different image directory

"the following partitions will be formatted:
...<here goes all the lvms in the storage>..."
I already tried all the options in the partitioning step without success
I am looking for the best/cheapest way to build a ubuntu server with 8tb of storage hanging off of it.
I don't feel it needs to be hardware raid, so more software raiding swap in and out failed disk drives.
The server itself normal duo core CPU with 2Gb of memory and i would like to have the internal drive of the O/S only.
I trying to create a Cluster Linux with two servers and one storage, I have mounted some filesystems in both servers, but, when I create a file on server (1), I don't see the file on server (2).
Is that a problem with the linux or storage configuration ?.
I'm planning on setting up a home file server. I was wondering what platform would be recommended for something like this. The server would be used mainly for media storage which would be shared between an HTPC and a couple desktops and laptops. I was thinking of just getting whatever motherboard had the most SATA headers on it (which currently seems to be something P55-based) and setting up a RAID5 fakeraid with some 1.5 or 2TB drives and the OS in RAID1 with whatever drives I have laying around. It there anything flawed with this approach? P55 boards with 10 SATA headers are currently upwards of $200, which is kind of pricey. Is there a more economical route that I should consider? Also, are there any known problems with setting up a fakeraid like this using certain motherboard's SATA controllers?

my setup:
HP Microserver, booting vmware from USB drive. Hardware RAID card (Adaptec RAID 2405), 2 x 250GB HDD in RAID1 (datastore1) with VM's, 2 x 2TB HDD in RAID1 (datastore2) - the storage I'm trying to add.
A search of the above errors yielded many results, all of them were different scenarios to mine.
Can ANYONE point me in the right direction on how to use storage on multiple servers as a single cluster?I thought storage cluster was for that but, after much googling, and even more help from here, I don't think that achieves my goal. My goal is to have multiple servers share a file system, to act as somewhat of a network raid, so if node-A goes down the files are available on other nodes, and hopefully so when the capacity of the nodes are reached I can add nodes to expand the "cluster".

And we used multipathing mechanism and created multipathing devices. i.e. /dev/mapper/mpath1. Then I created raw device /dev/raw/raw1 of this /dev/mapper/mpath1 Block device as per pre-reqs for Oracle Cluster. Every thing looks good, But we faced the performance issue as under.
when we run command :
#dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mapper/mpath1 bs=1024 count=1000
the writing rate is approx. 34 MB/s
But If we run command
#dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/raw/raw1 bs=1024 count=1000
the writing rate is very slow like 253 KB/s
I need some advice or tips or maybe your own experiences about building a home data storage or NAS.Here's some thoughts / requirements I think it should have:It should expandable. I'll stick a couple of 1TB HDDs and a little later I'll stick some moreIt should easily integrated to both Ubuntu and Windows 7. Ideally it'll be an integrated part of the filesystem.I'm thinking some sort of RAID as a backing up my data. RAID 1 seems like a such a waste but then again, these days, HDDs are cheap.And when I do add more HDDs, I'd like them to appear as one big storage unit instead of separate drives.Any suggestions and tips on how to go about this is welcome. I considered UEC, but many do not support hardware virtualization and all I really need is storage. Over all the machines, I estimate that I have 4-5 terabytes of storage, all going to waste because each one has relatively low storage space. Is there any way I could setup a redundant storage solution that utilities these machines in a networked system?

Now that summer comes closer I will not be home most of the time and I was thinking to use part of my server to upload/download files. Is there some nice package that provides an easy interface for such a task? I am reffering to something like the wikimedia package but for just downloading/uploading files.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to delete directories (long story, Mac temp files there, Windows not cooperating) on a sever connected to a HP 20 Modular Smart Array set up as RAID5. System currently running Windows. I've booted from a 9.10 LiveCD but can't see the external drives. Is it correct that I need to install mdadm to "see" those drives from LiveCD? From a different machine (linux) I can mount the drive using samba like so:
sudo smbmount //IP address/hostname RAID5 Root Share /mnt/ntserver -o username=smith,password=abcde123
I have admin privileges on the Windows OS. In linux (or Windows beforehand), is it possible to take ownership of the directories so that I can do a rm -f -r <dir> ?
My goal is to connect up a bunch of CentOS 5.6 servers to storage array which is running as an SRP target. These servers will be running eventually as Xen hypervisors. I'm using Mellanox Infiniband cards and a Qlogic Infiniband switch.
OFED drivers are already installed as standard. I have done the following.
1. Base install of CentOS 5.6 X86_64
2. Installed the following packages...
openib
ibutils
srptools
infiniband-diags
opensm
[Code]...
It works perfectly and connects to the target immediately with great results. I'd just like this to happen correctly on startup.
To work around the issue I have added the line srp_daemon -e -o into the init script for opensm /etc/init.d/opensmd but it doesnt always start the srp_daemon process. Its rather hit and miss
I'd really like srp_daemon to run as a service with a proper init script but I wouldnt know how to write one. I understand that this issue has been addressed in the RHEL6 srptools package but that doesnt help me because the software I intend to use on these servers specifically requires 5.

I have install the rock cluster on the main server . and I want to connect the client with the PXE boot . when I starting the client then it boot from the PXE boot into the mode of compute node. but it ask the where is to be stored the I have give the path..then server says that not able to find the directory path.
Steps:-
1) insert-ethers
2) client is started with the PXE boot.
3) it detects the dhcp .
4) At last it demand where is to be started by cd-rom, harddisk ,nfs etc.
then I started with the nfs and I have given the lanIp of server.and server is detecting the client but client is not finding the filesystem directory. into export partition directory but it is not taking path.
PATH:-
/export/rock/install it is not finding this path then it is not able to start the o/s from PXE boot..Is there any solution and manual of rock or anyother solution then u can reply to me...
Setup1: Two rack mounted servers with a common storage device serving as the home directories for users on the servers. The storage device is a gfs partition mounted on the servers as the home directory using SAS cables. These servers have RHEL 5.4 as the installed operating system.
Setup2: A standard tower server with Debian 6 as the operating system used for tape backups. This has a tape drive connected to it.
Question: How to mount the storage device of setup1 using NFS on the server in setup2.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a server running 8.04LTS with haproxy. This is a loadbalancer that handle port 80 connections.
However, I am seeing a lot of conntrack problems.
The default value is 65536 already. I have googled around and some says 65536 is the max value to go but some says to double the value to 131052 and so on. I did try increasing the value but the error still come.
Some says this is due to synflood and so on. I don't think it's synflood as we do connections more than 65536 with this haproxy.
Some also said to disable nf_conntrack. I have searched but there are no guide on how to disable nf_conntrack in ubuntu 8.04. Anyone can help to shed some light into this problem?
Should I increase the value to some crazy high one like 252000 (does it work?) or disable nf_conntrack?
If I disable nf_conntrack, will firewall software like CSF still work?
