Is there a way (in Ubuntu) to open applications automatically after login (and maybe after a couple of seconds) so that they are automatically placed (in sequence) on a particular portion of the screen and assigned to a particular desktop number?
View 4 RepliesI did an automatic update and rebooted this morning and I now have a bit of a nightmare situation where I can't open the majority of applications, including the terminal. When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).
EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.
I'm working in Debian, and I've noticed that when I resize my PuTTY window, the console inside isn't resizing to the new dimentions, so things like nano are running at 80xwhatever instead of the more useful 130xsomething that I've offered it.

and at times i run into a problem when you click on the app and it looks like it wants to open,the application's icon is on the bottom panel and the icon is bouncing up and down where there cursor is and then eventually it disappears.Is it timing out?

View 3 Replies View RelatedOne of the first things I do when starting Ubuntu (Netbook Edition) is to open a Terminal (ctrl-alt-T) with three tabs in it (ctrl-shift-T, ctrl-shift-T), one with irssi, one with ipython and one extra with just the commandline. Then I set the titles (F2) of the first two respectively to "irssi" and "ipython".Is there some way to write a script that automatically does all this? Or maybe save this configuration in a profile setting or something?
View 3 Replies View RelatedProblem with use of -hold|+hold on rxvt-unicode (urxvt) v9.09 on ubuntu server. On startup, I'm trying to launch terminal apps in urxvt automatically. E.g:

However, -|+hold does not seem to hold the terminal open. There is a flicker of a new window opening & then it's gone. I'm trying to invoke this from .xinitrc (startx-->.xinitrc) and also tried commands from inside awesome wm rc.lua (awful.util.spawn_with_shell("urxvt -hold -e mutt") seem to get same flicker result but closes immediately. I see this error in .xsession-errors, which might be relevant (do I perhaps need to specify the display??).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook running Ubuntu Netbook Edition and I would like a USB flash drive to be automatically mounted whenever I plug it in. The drive is FAT formatted. It mounts when I plug it in but all files are only writable by my user, other users only have read access. I understand that I need to add a corresponding entry to the /etc/fstab file. I've added the following so far:/dev/sdb1 /mnt/USB_DRIVE vfat
Firstly, is that appropriate so far? I've created /mnt/USB_DRIVE as root. Next, I'm not sure what options I should be finishing the line with, especially to get all users to be able to write to the drive.
I am having trouble getting grub to automatically boot into ubuntu server. When I turn on my server the grub menu shows up and shows me the choices. They all work fine except that grub wont automatically select one. This wouldn't be too much of a problem but this is a headless server and I can't boot into ubuntu without a keyboard. I tried looking through the grub 2 documentation but nothing seemed to work when I edited the conf file.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 11 to 12 and then installed the Nvidia proprietary drivers from RPMFusion. Initially glxinfo wouldn't work because SELinux was stopping it from using an executable stack. Since the Nvidia drivers are proprietary and a fix may not be provided, I allowed this access to glxinfo with chcon -t execmem_exec_t '/usr/bin/glxinfo'
However it looks like every program using glx-utils also needs these permissions - so far I allowed Xorg, compiz and the Firefox video plugin to execstack. Can anyone suggest a fix for this - preferably one that avoids execstack for all those apps since its a security risk. If not how do I create an SELinux policy to automatically grant apps execstack while they use glxinfo or other nVidia libraries but not at other times.
My pc has two operating system, XP and Fedora 14 I was setted PC to Auto turn on with BIOS, after turning on, system was booting in fedora automatically after 10 seconds.
But, After i upgrade to fedora 15 via terminal(Preupgrade), that auto booting has disabled. I should Press Enter to boot into Fedora 15. It should be have auto booting into feodra 15 like when i was fedora 14.

I'm using the latest nvidia driver for my asus gtx460 (260.19.12)Have already verified rendering is enabled, uninstalled nouveau & blacklisted, mesa glx is installed, no errors (that I can see), etc.When I run apps, even a gl screensaver, it will hang my whole box. To the point where I can't even, ctrl + alt + F1 (or F2, F3), for cli. So no command line output. And I've tested this in World of Padman, Alien Arena, Call of Duty 4 (under Wine), even Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Apps will start, but any gl content will quickly hang.This is the first time running ubuntu x64, and a new box

I am running a dual-boot with Ubuntu (10.10) and Windows 7. Recently I edited my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file to only show one version of Ubuntu (as opposed to several kernel versions) and Windows, simply by commenting out all other menu entries. My question is if I can edit GRUB to just boot a specific entry automatically.
I tried removing all other menu entries, but GRUB still showed the menu with only one entry. I've also considered just setting the timeout to either 0 or 1 second, as this would basically achieve the same thing.
I'm wondering how I start it automatically when I boot up the ubuntu 10.04? especially, when I created the user "postgres", I set a password to it. every time I issued "su - postgres" command, I need to give it a password.

I don't want to have this done at login, i want to pick and choose when I open them all.
I use the workspaces a lot.It helps me de clutter my desktop.One thing that does bug me about it though, is that every time I start my PC or laptop I have to move the auto start apps to the workspace I want them on. They always kick off in Workspace 1, I want them in specific spaces.

Now I want to get rid of everything windows vista and its partition.As I restart my computer the esc, f1,f2,f8,del, and f12 keys don't do anything on the screen that says Dell BIOS revision 1.0.3 the next screen is blank. and my monitor, on auto detect(analog input), says cannot display this video mode 1680x1050. I've tried using the live cd (I just put it in the drive, and don't know what else to do besides that)I've tried using sudo xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1024x768 --rate 60 in the terminal but all I get is this -> xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default (I did this because I thought it might be a monitor problem)

Ubuntu 10.04 fresh install on eee 900. I had previously tried Cairo-Dock and AWN (successfully but I like that DockbarX is integrated into the panel) I installed Dockbarx like so:

DockbarX was working.
Then I uninstalled Cairo and AWN with Synaptic.I got a notification of an error in the panel saying I had broken packages - see broken package filter to check it out.I can't find filters in Synaptic.Then I noticed DockbarX was empty (and I had pinned Firefox to it) So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling via terminal. No problems with that but when added it to the panel again it was still empty . I rebooted several times during these attempts.

i went to try to open a port for winmx 2.6 and its timeing out so i looked @ the ip and its completely diffrent from my host os ip so how would i allow out going connections in windows xp running under vbox
I have Windows 7 and Fedora 14 both on my laptop in dual boot configuration. When my computer starts up it shows a screen that says press any button to select another operating system to start, then I can make Windows 7 start. But after 2 seconds, if I DON'T press any button then Fedora starts automatically. How can I change this so Windows starts automatically when I don't press any button?
