Ubuntu :: Setup Apps To Open On The Same Workspace After Reboot?

Mar 25, 2011

I use the workspaces a lot.It helps me de clutter my desktop. One thing that does bug me about it though, is that every time I start my PC or laptop I have to move the auto start apps to the workspace I want them on. They always kick off in Workspace 1, I want them in specific spaces.

Ubuntu :: Can't Open Terminal And Other Apps After Automatically Update And Reboot

Sep 24, 2010

I did an automatic update and rebooted this morning and I now have a bit of a nightmare situation where I can't open the majority of applications, including the terminal. When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).

EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.

Fedora :: Right-click On KDE Workspace For Apps Menu?

Mar 25, 2011

I've been mostly using XFCE for a long time, but I'm finally giving KDE4 a serious try. Overall I like it pretty well, but there's one thing I like in XFCE that I can't replicate in K: I want to be able to right-click on the desktop to bring up the full apps menu. On XFCE the default behaviour is that right-clicking anywhere on the desktop background (anywhere not on a window, basically) will bring up the full "Start" menu with all the app categories, preferences/settings, etc. (I put "Start" menu above in quotes because I know that's really Windows-specific terminology. So no need to give me crap about that, kids.) Right now, when I right-click on the desktop in K I get a small menu with Konsole, Run, Activities, and Desktop Settings. What I want to happen is a full launcher menu like I have on the panel.

Anyone knows how to save the currently workspace settings on my desktop when logout/reboot/shutdown the old setting will resume? Currently, i have configured the multiple xterm sessions and placed them in each corner of workspace on dual monitors, but after the system rebooted the xterm sessions are resumed, but they display on one monitor instead of two monitor and overlapped each other. To the Problem : I have downloaded Chromium as the web browser as I am not a fan of Firefox, but every time I launch Chromium... It launches into a random work space and not the one I am working in.. So I cannot open multiple Chromium windows.. So to find where it has launched it, I have to click work space switcher and find it.. If I click Maximise, instead of maximizing it to the work space limits... it makes it go over 2 seperate work spaces..

Ubuntu :: Applications Jump From Their Workspace To The Current Workspace

Jul 20, 2011

I believe I may have found a bug in Unity. Under the right circumstances an application will jump from the workspace where I left them to my current workspace. This is most noticeable with VirtualBox. I built an Ubuntu 11.04 virtual machine so that I could test out new packages before I push them out to the rest of my machines. But the window for the virtual machine constantly appears in my current workspace. It may take a few minutes, or 30 minutes, but it will happen.

I can kind of understand it if a new window appears, but at least with VirtualBox, this happens on a running virtual machine seemingly randomly.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 Recently Used Apps Area Empty After Reboot

Jul 22, 2010

Not earth-shattering, I don't suppose, but have noticed that since installing 11.3 (Fresh install, x64, DVD), the "Recently Used" list in the "Start(? Kicker??)" Menu, doesn't save applications through a reboot... ie, if I start Thunderbird, Open Office, whatever while logged in, these will then appear in the "Recently used" section of the menu, but then do a reboot, and the applications area in the recently used menu, will be empty. The "documents" area is fine, and shows stuff after a reboot, but not "applications"....

Ubuntu :: Install A Minimal Gnome Setup Without Any Of The Usually Installed Apps

May 25, 2011

I'm trying to install a minimal Gnome setup without any of the usually installed apps. Last time I tried this it worked fine but that was a couple of years ago (see this thread if you're interested). The closest I've got so far is to install a CLI system from the alternate install CD and then run:

Code:
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude -y full upgrade
sudo aptitude -y install xorg gdm gnome-core plymouth-theme-ubuntu-logo ubuntu-artwork jockey-gtk network-manager synaptic

The problem is that one of these packages (I think that it's gnome-core) installs Epiphany, Evince, Evolution, Gwibber and Ubuntu One which I don't want. how to get a minimal system installed without these apps?

I'm using the latest nvidia driver for my asus gtx460 (260.19.12)Have already verified rendering is enabled, uninstalled nouveau & blacklisted, mesa glx is installed, no errors (that I can see), etc. When I run apps, even a gl screensaver, it will hang my whole box. And I've tested this in World of Padman, Alien Arena, Call of Duty 4 (under Wine), even Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Ubuntu :: DockbarX No Longer Shows Open Apps Or Launchers

Jun 17, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 fresh install on eee 900. I had previously tried Cairo-Dock and AWN (successfully but I like that DockbarX is integrated into the panel) I installed Dockbarx like so:

Code:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dockbar-main/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install dockbarx
DockbarX was working.

Then I uninstalled Cairo and AWN with Synaptic.I got a notification of an error in the panel saying I had broken packages - see broken package filter to check it out.I can't find filters in Synaptic. Then I noticed DockbarX was empty (and I had pinned Firefox to it) So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling via terminal. No problems with that but when added it to the panel again it was still empty . I rebooted several times during these attempts.

- Launchers disappear
- Open applications not reflected in launchers
