Ubuntu :: Want To Begin Some Apps Minmized To Tray Automatically At Startup

Jul 7, 2011

Kind of like Windows allows you to do. Specifically, I'd like to get Thunderbird to startup in the tray each time I log in.

Ubuntu :: No Tray Icons For Some Apps?

Jun 29, 2011

I noticed that some applications, like Amarok and KTorrent, do not get minimized in the tray when I close them. They don't shutdown either, they just disappear from the taskbar and do not show up in the tray icon space. If I execute "amarok" in the terminal, it says "Amarok is already running!" and then executes.

It's weird because Thunderbird and Virtualbox both show up as tray icons when I launch them.

Ubuntu :: Tray Icons Missing For Many Apps?

Apr 29, 2011

The tray icons for many apps (especially QT apps) are missing! Important apps that become unusable after being minimized to tray - due to having no tray icon:
* Pidgin
* KeePass
* JungleDisk

Anyone know if this can be fixed? A workaround? An explanation? Is this a known (rather extremely serious I should say) bug?

After resolving the issue with updating Fedora, I have a new issue and it that my clock (as well as the network status icon, etc) and apps tray have literally disappeared (as shown by the provided screen shot). The only way I can can switch applications is with alt+tab. Sorry if this may sound dumb if it is a simple fix, but I have looked around in System>Preferences/Administration and could not find anything.

Debian Multimedia :: Empty System Tray At KDE Startup

Jun 7, 2010

Occasionally I get on lenny an empty system tray when logging in KDE, no right click menu, no icons. The previous session had been closed regularly. Is there a way to properly shutdown in the circumstances and to fix the problem?

(I don't know whether this has something to do with this but, in the past, on typing by mistake the print screen key, I got multiple instances of ksnapshot launched automatically and had to delete the directory under 'home' ~/.kde/share/config/session and the file ~/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc to prevent this from repeating itself at every KDE login. The empty tray issue, however did not arise immediately after this, so it might be unrelated.)

Ubuntu :: Automatically Start Apps In Terminal With Titles?

Sep 28, 2010

One of the first things I do when starting Ubuntu (Netbook Edition) is to open a Terminal (ctrl-alt-T) with three tabs in it (ctrl-shift-T, ctrl-shift-T), one with irssi, one with ipython and one extra with just the commandline. Then I set the titles (F2) of the first two respectively to "irssi" and "ipython".Is there some way to write a script that automatically does all this? Or maybe save this configuration in a profile setting or something?

Ubuntu :: Launching Terminal Apps In URXVT Automatically

May 12, 2011

Problem with use of -hold|+hold on rxvt-unicode (urxvt) v9.09 on ubuntu server. On startup, I'm trying to launch terminal apps in urxvt automatically. E.g:
Code:
"urxvt -e /usr/bin/weechat-curses +hold"
or
Code:
"urxvt -hold -e mutt"

However, -|+hold does not seem to hold the terminal open. There is a flicker of a new window opening & then it's gone. I'm trying to invoke this from .xinitrc (startx-->.xinitrc) and also tried commands from inside awesome wm rc.lua (awful.util.spawn_with_shell("urxvt -hold -e mutt") seem to get same flicker result but closes immediately. I see this error in .xsession-errors, which might be relevant (do I perhaps need to specify the display??).

Code:

Ubuntu :: Can't Open Terminal And Other Apps After Automatically Update And Reboot

Sep 24, 2010

I did an automatic update and rebooted this morning and I now have a bit of a nightmare situation where I can't open the majority of applications, including the terminal. When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).

EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.

Ubuntu :: Apps Disappear From 'startup Applications' List

Nov 8, 2010

I've been trying to add applications to my "Startup Applications" menu. Most of the time, they "stick," but sometimes simply disappear, either immediately or after a variable length of time (sometimes more or less immediately, sometimes after several restarts, or anywhere in between). I've noticed that, when they stop booting, their entry disappears from ~/.config/autostart, but changing permissions on the affected files (e.g., removing write access) doesn't seem to help.

Any suggestions? Re-adding the same things over and over gets frustrating after a while, and I can't figure out why these entries are disappearing.Currently running Ubuntu 9.10 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 with an Intel Centrino Core Duo processor and 2 GB of RAM.

Ubuntu :: Change Execution Order Of Startup Apps?

Aug 5, 2011

How do you change the order of execution of gnome startup apps?(System - Preferences - Startup Applications) does not seem to have any way to do it.I saw an archived post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=659420) which offered a couple of ideas... (1) mucking around with /etc/rc2.d/ -- but that seems to be only system-level apps, not user apps; or (2) going to (System - Preferences - Sessions) and mucking around in there -- but I don't seem to have that menu on my system (10.04 LTS running as a guest in vmware player 3.1)I just want vmware-user to run before my gnome-terminals so that the desktop is resized before the terminals run.

General :: Java Apps Slow Startup When Connected To Network?

Aug 11, 2011

I'm using Arch Linux with kernel 3.0 and brcmsmac to manage my wireless card. My desktop environment is KDE 4.7 and I use networkmanager to handle network. Recently I've been affected by a weird problem wherein whenever I'm connected to a network Java apps such as jEdit take ~30 seconds longer to start but behave normal once started. What could it be due to and how can I fix it?EDIT:The problem occurs both with Oracle's JRE and OpenJDK, both versions 1.7. I'm behind a HTTP proxy, if that makes a difference.EDIT:I've discovered the cause of this problem. My /etc/hosts file had the wrong host name in it. After correcting this to my hostnameeverything is fine.

Fedora Security :: Create An SELinux Policy To Automatically Grant Apps Execstack While They Use Glxinfo

Nov 20, 2009

I just upgraded from 11 to 12 and then installed the Nvidia proprietary drivers from RPMFusion. Initially glxinfo wouldn't work because SELinux was stopping it from using an executable stack. Since the Nvidia drivers are proprietary and a fix may not be provided, I allowed this access to glxinfo with chcon -t execmem_exec_t '/usr/bin/glxinfo'

However it looks like every program using glx-utils also needs these permissions - so far I allowed Xorg, compiz and the Firefox video plugin to execstack. Can anyone suggest a fix for this - preferably one that avoids execstack for all those apps since its a security risk. If not how do I create an SELinux policy to automatically grant apps execstack while they use glxinfo or other nVidia libraries but not at other times.
