Ubuntu :: Gnome Opens Apps Automatically - How To Stop It
Jan 29, 2010
For some reason, Gnome keeps opening some programs that I frequently use (Gedit, gnome-terminal, and a document viewer) at startup.I have disabled the"remember my open programs" option from the Preferences menu and it still happens!
Every time I open an app or window in Kubuntu 10.10, they open up on the secondary monitor. I would like them to open up on the main screen because I don't always want to use my second screen. Is there a setting I'm missing?
I've just allowed Ghostery to update to version 2.3. Now every time I open my browser (Firefox), a Ghostery tab opens after my homepage tab opens. How do/can I prevent this (the opening of a Ghostery tab in Firefox) from happening?
Edit: what is popping up is a "Ghostery Configuration Walkthrough", a setup wizard. I've looked on the Ghostery forum; some are seeking ways to get around this wizard; but, so far, no answers. A Google search didn't produce anything either. So, I guess I'll run the wizard and see what happens; even though there are no settings that I would change.
Is it possible to save a workspace so that it automatically opens every time you boot Fedora?
I like having Pidgin, Evolution, VLC, and Transmission open in the 4th workspace all the time. Sorry if this has been asked, I searched and found nothing, and this is the first Linux OS I've ever used!
I've got my Lenovo T60 laptop wireless running without too much trouble, the only problem is when i close my laptop lid and open it again the wirelessconnection is down and i simply cant click on the network icon in the notification area to re-connect as wlan0 is inactive. If i go to System>admin>network i cant activate the interface either as the 'active' button is greyed out, the only way to get the thing to come alive again (other than a full reboot) is to toggle the wireless switch on my laptop off and then back on.Not sure this should be required, i've got the interface configured to start automatically but it doesnt seem to care.
ive installed adobe AIR on my ubuntu karmic x64 distro as per the instructions on adobe's website, but whenever an adobe air app launches it prompts me for a password. I remember (before gnome-keyring-manager was replaced with seahorse) I found a way around it, but i gather that gnome-keyring-manager has been replaced now
I have found a couple of posts complaining about this problem but none offering solutions. In a nutshell, I want to prevent ALL programs from creating new windows that steal the keyboard focus away from whatever window I was just using. The most common offender is Synaptic when running updates/installs. I will be typing an email, playing a game, whatever, and all of a sudden a new window will pop up, steal focus, and if I'm not paying enough attention, whatever I'm typing will interact with it and cancel something or say yes to something before I even realize it. Another really bad offender is Firefox with the dialogs to accept cookies or entering/leaving a secure website. I still want all of those dialog boxes to appear but I don't want them to automatically steal focus from my other applications. Another user suggested having them blink in the task bar and I like that well enough if it is possible.
Is there a way to lock the focus to the active program/window unless the end user switches it away (i.e. no stealing)?
One post said something about window rules but gave no details. A lot of posts talk about the mouse cursor position selecting the window option (which I do not want and would not fix this problem anyway). One post said it was fixed in Feisty (guess it came back...)
Is there any app that allows the user to pause/stop apps in a way like xkill? My notebook cpu is a crappy CeleronM from 3 years back. So sometimes I want to just devote all my attention to one app or want to stop some apps from sucking up juices. I don't want to tweak with the nice level manually nor go through sys mon.
XKill I have configured xkill with a hotkey. That way, I press the hotkey, and the cursor turns to a 'X' cross, and I click on the app that I want to kill (usually a hung app). This means I can avoid the console and the system monitor app.
XStop / XPause? Can I do the same for pausing or stopping apps? Bind it to a hotkey and a 'X' cross appear for the cursor, and I can pause apps? Ideally, I should be able to unpause it in similar way.
One of the first things I do when starting Ubuntu (Netbook Edition) is to open a Terminal (ctrl-alt-T) with three tabs in it (ctrl-shift-T, ctrl-shift-T), one with irssi, one with ipython and one extra with just the commandline. Then I set the titles (F2) of the first two respectively to "irssi" and "ipython".Is there some way to write a script that automatically does all this? Or maybe save this configuration in a profile setting or something?
Problem with use of -hold|+hold on rxvt-unicode (urxvt) v9.09 on ubuntu server. On startup, I'm trying to launch terminal apps in urxvt automatically. E.g: Code: "urxvt -e /usr/bin/weechat-curses +hold" or Code: "urxvt -hold -e mutt"
However, -|+hold does not seem to hold the terminal open. There is a flicker of a new window opening & then it's gone. I'm trying to invoke this from .xinitrc (startx-->.xinitrc) and also tried commands from inside awesome wm rc.lua (awful.util.spawn_with_shell("urxvt -hold -e mutt") seem to get same flicker result but closes immediately. I see this error in .xsession-errors, which might be relevant (do I perhaps need to specify the display??).
Code: [1461:1634:41805904:ERROR:all_status.cc(117)] Unrecognized Syncer Event: 7 E: awesome: a_xcb_io_cb:230: X server connection broke urxvt: X connection to ':0' broken, unable to recover, exiting.
Hey folks. I'm not sure how to describe this properly but periodically Kubuntu 11.04 will stop responding to my mouse and keyboard EXCEPT that Plasma, or what I assume is Plasma, still responds to mouse events. I can launch and exit the desktop cube and desktop grid but can't access my panels or any application controls. The only fix I've found is to do a hard power cycle.
Does this behavior ring any bells for anyone? This is the last hurdle I've got between me and using Kubuntu 11.04 full time on my Samsung RV515.
I did an automatic update and rebooted this morning and I now have a bit of a nightmare situation where I can't open the majority of applications, including the terminal. When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).
EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.
Is there a way (in Ubuntu) to open applications automatically after login (and maybe after a couple of seconds) so that they are automatically placed (in sequence) on a particular portion of the screen and assigned to a particular desktop number?
I'm on Debian Squeeze, and my terminal emulator is gnome-terminal. For some reason, my terminal has started to open completely blank, without showing
Code: user@computername:~$ All it shows is a flashing cursor, and I have to press ctrl+c to get that command prompt prefix to show up. I'd like to know how to fix this. xsession-errors shows nothing useful regarding the gnome-terminal.
I'm working in Debian, and I've noticed that when I resize my PuTTY window, the console inside isn't resizing to the new dimentions, so things like nano are running at 80xwhatever instead of the more useful 130xsomething that I've offered it.
I'm having a strange problem in my gnome installation. I have about a dozen window managers installed, and just to test the new KDE 4.4 update I used kde for one day (use gnome mostly) and now the gnome places menu opens up the kde file manager dolphin instead of nautilus. How can I change it. It doesn't even appear in the edit menus item on right clicking the menu.
Anyone know how to stop the pureftpd starting up automatically? I've tried the usual in /etc/init.d/pureftpd but it still starts and I need to log in and close it in the admin UI or in terminal.
A server like Lighttpd or Apache starts automatically at boot after you install it. How do I stop it from auto starting? I'd prefer to manually start it when I need it.
I recently upgraded to Ubuntu version 10.10 64-bit and since then closing GEdit won't stop the process automatically when the window is closed and I have to kill it manually. I didn't have this problem with version 10.04 (also 64-bit) and I didn't change any settings after the upgrade.
