I have Windows 7 and Fedora 14 both on my laptop in dual boot configuration. When my computer starts up it shows a screen that says press any button to select another operating system to start, then I can make Windows 7 start. But after 2 seconds, if I DON'T press any button then Fedora starts automatically. How can I change this so Windows starts automatically when I don't press any button?

I installed dansguardian & squid on 11.2 and things seem to run fine. Squid auto starts but dansguardian does not. I have checked Yast2's runlevel services option and dansguardian is enabled to 'Yes'. But when i check with 'service dansguardian status' it reports 'unused'.If i start dansguardian by hand, things work perfectly fine.I am in a desperate situation since there are 4 other computers which are dependent on this setup to work correctly
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Windows XP Pro and RedHat Linux Enterprise 5 on my PC for my purpose. The PC is used by other family members too and they need only Windows OS for browsing. It is becoming problem for them to reboot after the PC enters into Linux by default. I am still learning Linux and I want to edit the /boot/grub.conf file to make Windows as default OS to boot. The following is the content of my grub.conf file (FYI):

I have read some stuff but none seemed to work such as putting default=saved and in the window (other) section putting savedefault. hmm I know I can just specify the number after default but that breaks when a new kernel is installed. so any way to always make windows the default choice (so my wife will stop moaning
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have switched to openbox from Gnome and would now like to stop using Metacity altogether. When I was using metacity I had both a control theme (e.g. gtk theme) and fonts set up how I liked them in gnome-appearance-proporties. When Openbox starts, it gets my window borders up properly (ofc.) but fails to render my fonts properly and uses the wrong gtk theme. I can't find anywhere to specify which gtk theme to use or what method to render my text with. After Openbox is finished doing it's thing, and I run gnome-apperance-properties manually, it will automatically set everything to it's proper value, but I don't want to have to do this as it takes several seconds to preform and I'd rather not have it jury rigged like this.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to the new Ubuntu distribution. My GRUB looks the same and has an entry for WIndows7, however when I chose this option I just get a blank screen and it doesn't load Windows.

All this started when I decided to upgrade Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. Now Windows XP gives me a blank screen and doesnt run. I have tried a bunch of things but didnt help. I also clean installed Ubuntu 9.10 into a new partition and removed the deleted the other partition.

1. Windows XP on sda1 wont start from grub2 (version 1.97-beta4).
2. I can access the windows partition from Linux and see all the files.
3. When I boot using windows cd, and go to recovery mode it doesnt list Windows XP.
4. From windows Recovery mode when I try "diskpart" it says no partitions in c drive.
Im new to linux and everything and have never done a dualboot before but i have instaled ubuntu 10.10 (going to update to 11.04) and everything went as planed and i partioned the hard drive equally on the live cd installer. but now when i go run windows xp pro from the GRUB menu it boots with the xp loading bar for about 3 seconds the goes onto the windows bluescreen. Ive tried this about 5 times.

However, whenever i start the partition editor during the Fedora installation, it says that there is no free space in your hardware, even though it shows 40gb space in the disk partition table.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am planing to install fedora 13 on my dual boot (windows-7 + fedora) laptop. Previously some one helped me installing fedora on my laptop. Below let me mention the my file system architecture as the question is related to it. It's a 320 GB hard drive.
1. First 250 MB primary partition (used to be for /boot, which is currently unallocated, because in last installation I chose fedora to install automatically).
2. Next 120 GB windows primary partition.
3. Next 200 GB Logical partition
a. First 125 GB for windows backup
b. rest for Linux (500 MB + 60 GB).
As Linux was installed later thus it wrote the boot partition itself. I want the boot partition in the first 250 MB partition (reason, to be safe, I don't want to mess up with the master boot record while playing with Linux), also need to install fedora 13. The architecture I want is following:
1. first 250 MB: /boot
2. Next 120 GB: Windows
3. Logical:
a. First 125 GB: Windows backup.
b. Next 4 GB: /swap
c. Rest: /root -- I want to install Fedora here
So, what I plan to do is to whip out all the current Linux file systems and insert fedora dvd and install according to my criteria!
Now my questions are:
1. since currently Linux has the master boot record, will it cause any problem for the machine to boot up from installation dvd, if I whip off all the current Linux partitions? (Or in other words, does installation/ live-CD need a master boot record to boot? -- I am guessing once I reinstall Linux, booting is not a problem).
2. Once Linux is whipped off, can windows boot up automatically?
3. Is there any worry of messing up windows, specially its boot sector(off course I will take precaution not touching windows partitions!)
I installed Ubuntu a while ago now and I like it but when I installed it I removed windows and now its starting to annoy me. I cannot sync my ipod touch, I can't play some of my games because they are all meant for windows and wine does not work for then so what I want to do is uninstall ubuntu and reinstall windows xp, then I will reinstall ubuntu and this time around I will make a dual boot. Only one problem, I don't know how to uninstall ubuntu.

When I boot to Fedora OS to fill in initial settings (user name, password, network etc) to get it up and running the mousepad doesn't work (there is no cursor). It still works fine in Windows.Anyone know how to get this sorted? The laptop is an HP Pavillion ze2000. No external USB mouse or similar has been used.

I am running a dual-boot with Ubuntu (10.10) and Windows 7. Recently I edited my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file to only show one version of Ubuntu (as opposed to several kernel versions) and Windows, simply by commenting out all other menu entries. My question is if I can edit GRUB to just boot a specific entry automatically.
I tried removing all other menu entries, but GRUB still showed the menu with only one entry. I've also considered just setting the timeout to either 0 or 1 second, as this would basically achieve the same thing.
I'm wondering how I start it automatically when I boot up the ubuntu 10.04? especially, when I created the user "postgres", I set a password to it. every time I issued "su - postgres" command, I need to give it a password.

Do we need to specify which machine should be the primary node every time? Is there any method to make the machine "know" it's itself the primary node?
I have a lenovo thinkpad laptop, and it has both touch-pad (standard build in laptop mouse) and touch-point (in the middle of the keyboard) mouse options.
I almost invariably use the touch-point and the accompanied scroller and key-buttons.
HOWEVER, for the scroller to be recognized by ubuntu you must run two scripts as follows:
xinput set-int-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation" 8 1
xinput set-int-prop "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint" "Evdev Wheel Emulation Button" 8 2
Restarting the computer resets these settings, and you must re-run them each time you start up ubuntu.
I am looking to write a script that will automatically run itself (which will execute the above commands), or to permanently change these settings so that it will not be necessary to run them at each start-up.

Hardware: Toshiba NB200 with Atom 280 & 2GB, 160 GB HD Everything works great except the boot time. My default boot is F11 & when the system starts in "yuk" Windows it only takes a few seconds! but when I start in F11 it takes 15 - 20 minutes for it to start. No error messages, nothing in dmesg, standard configuration. The same system with Win XP & F10 worked fine?

In particular I would like to make Firefox open on the second monitor. For now I am just manually moving Firefox to the second monitor, but if I close it down and open it again, it automatically opens on the first monitor. Is there a way to make it automatically open on the second monitor?
I have two Nvidia cards in my machine. I did have one monitor connected to each video card, but I was unable to get a dual monitor set up to work like this, so I plugged both monitors into one card and the dual monitor set up works fine like. Is there a way to make dual monitors work if you have a monitor connected to each video card? When I had a monitor connected to each video card, I could see the second monitor in the Nvidia settings, but it always disabled it. I could enable it, but it would grey out twin view. After I enabled it, I'll restart the X server, the second monitor would auto disable again.
I'm using Gnome, I don't have the above issue in Xfce4 - it works fine with one monitor connected to each card in Xfce4. However, I want to use Gnome. I've searched, but have not been able to find a solution to either of these issues. I read you can fix the application to launch in a second monitor with wmctrl. I've tried to install it with yum, but I get the message: No package wmctrl available.
I used to input Chinese with scim input method, which can be trigered by Ctrl^Space. But this time, I reinstalled ubuntu 10.04, I have to manually start up ibus from System>Preference>ibus firstly before I can triger the input method by Ctrl^Space.
This is not over, the key problem is there are several dialogues to click "ok" with before I can really use the scim.
How can I make this ibus startup automatically and quitely?
I tried put command "ibus -setup" into my .profile, it does start up the ibus automatically every time when I login, but the dialogues still bothering me.
