General :: Unable To Use Boot Menu And Ubuntu Automatically Boots?

Jun 21, 2011

I dual-booted Ubuntu three weeks ago with windows vista. Now I want to get rid of everything windows vista and its partition. As I restart my computer the esc, f1,f2,f8,del, and f12 keys don't do anything on the screen that says Dell BIOS revision 1.0.3 the next screen is blank. and my monitor, on auto detect(analog input), says cannot display this video mode 1680x1050. I've tried using the live cd (I just put it in the drive, and don't know what else to do besides that)I've tried using sudo xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1024x768 --rate 60 in the terminal but all I get is this -> xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default (I did this because I thought it might be a monitor problem)
I've tried going to disk utility...buts that all mumbo jumbo to meex: can anyone explain partitions me? I have: dell utility 49MB FAT,recovery 11 GB NTFS, OS 184 BG NTFS, Extended 56 GB, 53 GB ext4, and finally 2.1 GB Swap 2.1 GB which is the last partition known as sda6.

Ubuntu :: Automatically Boots Up Into Windows 7 - Can't Load / Boot Back

Jul 5, 2011

First, let me start off by saying that for the past 5-6 months I've been using Linux stand-alone without Windows at all. Recently though, I got netflix and found that there is no support for Linux distros. So, begrudgingly, I installed a small Windows Partition on my computer. So here's the problem: I can't boot back into Ubuntu. Whenever I turn on my computer, it automatically boots up into Windows 7. I know my Ubuntu partition is still there, because when I boot from my live disc I can see it. Is there a way I can fix this using Windows and/or a live disc?

Software :: Unable To Boot Into GRUB Loader: GRUB Command Shell Boots Up?

Sep 2, 2009

A failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media. An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... (relative to boot). and WINDOWS on (hd0,1), with chainloader +1

I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally. What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Start 9.1 - How To Get Rid Of Boot Menu

Jan 21, 2010

I downloaded v9.1 and chose to install it within Windows (XP). It seemed to install OK, but when the installation was complete and the machine rebooted, I chose Ubuntu on the boot screen, but all I got was the following message "GNU GRUB v1.97 beta4 - minimal BASH-like editing is supported ... etc" and an input line " sh-grub> " What's happening, and how do I get by this to run Ubuntu? This is my first attempt with Linux, and I can honestly say, I am not too impressed. Now I have a menu on booting asking if I want XP or Ubuntu. Ubuntu wont boot, so, how can I repair or how can I get rid of this boot menu to return my computer to 'as it was' before

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 No Menu Still Boots Into Default Entry?

Mar 4, 2010

I recently upgraded grub -> grub2 on my karmic box. Grub2 worked when chainloaded from legacy grub, and also the first time I tried it standalone. Both times the grub2 menu came up.

I ran vbeinfo at a grub2 command prompt, and found my monitor's native res listed - 1280x1024. I added that to my /etc/defaults/grub and then ran update-grub, and rebooted. This time no menu appeared and the default entry booted straight away. I suspected that the resolution was not supported for some reason or that the way I entered it in the config file was wrong, so I commented it out again in /etc/default/grub, and ran update-grub again - to no avail.

I have since tried lots of different formats for the GRUB_GFXMODE, such as 1280x1024@24, 1280x1024x24, and the normal 640x480, but none of them give me a grub menu. I have even tried using GRUB_TERMINAL=console, to no avail. I have checked the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file each time to make sure my changes were put there correctly by update-grub. I have also made sure that timeout was set to 10, and the hidden timeout was set to 0. My GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet".

I have reinstalled grub2, grub-pc, and grub-common, and I have dpkg-reconfigured them all too. I have no idea what to do to get my grub menu showing up again.

I am having trouble getting grub to automatically boot into ubuntu server. When I turn on my server the grub menu shows up and shows me the choices. They all work fine except that grub wont automatically select one. This wouldn't be too much of a problem but this is a headless server and I can't boot into ubuntu without a keyboard. I tried looking through the grub 2 documentation but nothing seemed to work when I edited the conf file.

Ubuntu Installation :: After Installation Automatically Boots Into A Black Screen With Blinking Cursor?

Jun 24, 2010

Problem-PC automatically boots into a black screen with blinking cursor. No message or nothing

I have 4 HD. Primary drive has Windows Vista, Secondary no OS installed. Sata1 HD Ubuntu 10.04, Sata2 Windows 7. Prior to installing windows 7 all was perfect but once I did it, grub got all screwed up. The only way I can boot into grub is if I manually select my Sata1 which has Ubuntu on it and only then it allows me to select Linux or Windows OS. How can I change that so it can boot up normally as before? I'm assuming that grub was installed in the primary drive which has vista on it, but once I installed windows 7 it got deleted and when I tried reinstalling Ubuntu, the grub was not installed in the primary drive.

General :: Make GRUB Automatically Boot Ubuntu

Feb 17, 2011

I am running a dual-boot with Ubuntu (10.10) and Windows 7. Recently I edited my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file to only show one version of Ubuntu (as opposed to several kernel versions) and Windows, simply by commenting out all other menu entries. My question is if I can edit GRUB to just boot a specific entry automatically.

I tried removing all other menu entries, but GRUB still showed the menu with only one entry. I've also considered just setting the timeout to either 0 or 1 second, as this would basically achieve the same thing.

Ubuntu Installation :: Add Entry To Menu.lst Automatically?

Mar 10, 2010

Update Mgr got me a bunch of updates today, including a kernel (2.6.31-20). I was doing something else, and when it prompted me to do something with menu.lst, I accidentally accepted the default, which I think was to keep menu.lst unchanged.

As a result, the new kernel was installed but not added to menu.lst, so I guess I can't boot to it.

Is there a way to tell my computer, "make the entries into menu.lst automatically"

I guess I could put the entries in manually, but as a beginner, I'm pretty scared to be messing with that file...perhaps if someone has a link to an exceptionally understandable explanation...

General :: Unable To Use Popup Menu When Selecting Text?

Feb 24, 2011

I've been using Linux for about six years now, and I joined this website hoping to learn more about Linux, keep updated with Linux news, others less experienced than me; I spend so much time on Reddit I rarely remember there's a whole Internet how there and I've yet to really visit this website since I registered. I'm posting this in the newbie section because the problem I'm having feels like it probably has a simple solution, but I don't what to do. If this forum is inappropriate, I suppose a mod could move it?

Anyway, upon highlighting a link in either Firefox 4 nightly or Chromium, I get this pop-up menu: [URL](copy paste and remove the space between the h and the t - and yes, this is a "screenshot" taken with a camera, as this menu seems to inhibit the functioning of the PrintScreen key for some reason) I do not need to click - as soon as a URL is highlighted, the menu pops up, forcing me to click away in order to cancel the menu. At first I assumed it was a Firefox thing - it happens in both 3.6 and 4 Nightly - so I began checking all of my add-ons (only 4) and plugins to see if I have some plugin causing this. Nothing seemed to be.

When I switched to Chromium, I quickly realized the same thing happens in Chromium, as well, so it's independent of what browser I'm using. This leads me to believe it's some package I have installed (apt-get, I'm using Linux Mint on this laptop, and on my other computers, which are running Arch, I do not encounter this in either Chromium or Firefox4) that's causing this, so if someone could just identify what package it is I can remove it. Or maybe my assumption is incorrect and there's something else that leads to this popup, but either way, it's really annoying and I want it gone!
