I'm trying to create a bash script that will open firefox, evolution, gedit (specific file), etc. For the most part it works, but after it opens evolution or gedit, it pauses execution, until I close that app down.
I don't want to have this done at login, i want to pick and choose when I open them all.
I am trying to write a bash script to open 1 screen session with multiple windows... each one running a different service. Is this possible? I tried several things, and I can start up multiple sessions really easy.. but not 1 session with multiple windows...
I want this so I can attach to that session and quickly move between the different windows.
What i am i doing wrong? i download these very good app's from yast
and at times i run into a problem when you click on the app and it looks like it wants to open,the application's icon is on the bottom panel and the icon is bouncing up and down where there cursor is and then eventually it disappears.Is it timing out?
I have written quite a few separate bash & scripts and php scripts that up to now I have run from cron jobs. However I have to estimate how long each takes to run, before running the next and so it probably takes much longer than necessary to run them all. They have to run in order.
Now there are so many I am thinking it would be better to have a master bash script that would run one after the other, but I am not sure how to get the master script to wait before starting to run the next script. Is this possible and is there a command that will make the script wait between bash and php scripts , for them to finish, before running the next?
Using more than one instance of the same app is a real pita in Unity.If I have 3 (or more) pdf documents open in evince then there isn't a way to shift from one to the other using the mouse. Previously I had the windows on the taskbar and could click on the one I wanted. In Unity clicking on the evince icon on the launcher just brings ALL the instances of evince to the top - I still then have to shuffle the windows around to get the one I want.I've been trying to get used to Unity over the last few days, so maybe I am just doing it wrong, but if not then maybe I should file a bug report?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am running XBMC-standalone on a minimal Ubuntu installation and everything works as it should almost out of the box ... Now I would like to use my remote to navigate through ultrastardx which I start as an app(within XBMC).
I use linux-input-layer(devinput) with lirc(=necessary to make all buttons work).
So, if I start ultrastardx with the configuration from above my RC does not work at all but when I kill lircd before I start ultrastardx I ll get basic functions like Left, Right, Enter,... This is great but I miss two main functions Jumpto and search. To get them work and tremendously increasing the WAF I would need to send a key-sequence to ultrastardx.
What do I have to do to send such a sequence like "alt+j"?
Is there a way to kill lircd automatically before I start ultrastardy(at the moment I have to this manually )?
I've got an annoying problem that 'man' and some other commands do not auto-complete (via TAB). e.g. typing: man rsyn (TAB, TAB, TAB, etc) will not auto-complete to 'man rsync' however, if i 'sudo -s' & then try the above, 'man' auto-completes everytime. (Directories always auto-complete successfully) My ~/.bashrc contains:

I have stated that I use Pulse because ALSA fails to utilize more then one sound app. With ALSA if I watch a ..... vid in firerfox and soon open my music player the music player wont work unless I close off firefox. so I close off firefox but sometimes flash hangs the sound device hostage and I have to log out or kill something to make sure ALSA is freed up. So this is why I use pulse, it makes using more then one sound app at a time much easier, no hang ups at all. But there are a few apps that dont get along with pulse so there must be a way to configure alsa to use more then one sound app at a time. Do I have some compiling to do? Is it commandline? I am just curious what you anti pulse folks do to use more then one sound app at a time without the aid of pulse. it only mumbles about the differences between the multiple sound servers.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using a java application that runs as an interactive command line (in a terminal). My problem is that it's rather unfriendly as an interaction mode as it's minimalistic: it doesn't allow going to and fro with arrows, there's no history and so on. So I have to type all commands every time and have to retype it if I missed something at the beginning of the line, or I have to copy and paste from a txt editor. The strange thing is that I have seen the same application running on a Windows box and allowing for all the sugar. So I'm not sure if it's because of the shell script I run (as opposed to the .bat) or whether it has to do with system or profile settings in my shell.

In hope I would have something closer to my normal terminal. The app runs but it doesn't change anything to the interactive mode. I'm rather clueless regarding sh/bash and so on. I've seen the manuals but I'm not entirely at home understanding and using their options. I know that there's a .bashrc and perhaps something like a profile somewhere, but I don't really know how to do things with these without risking messing up.

I'm using the latest nvidia driver for my asus gtx460 (260.19.12)Have already verified rendering is enabled, uninstalled nouveau & blacklisted, mesa glx is installed, no errors (that I can see), etc.When I run apps, even a gl screensaver, it will hang my whole box. To the point where I can't even, ctrl + alt + F1 (or F2, F3), for cli. So no command line output. I'm having a problem building some applications (e.g. Qsynth and FreeCAD) with sbopkg relating to an unfound library named "jscore". I've been keeping my system up to date with slackware64-current.Google searches have turned up very little about this library. There is a sourceforge page that has no files and seems to be related to a google hosted script jsCore.js... but I don't think that's what's missing here. I've come across some vague references to this jscore library being part of webkit. Can anyone verify this? I updated my webkit library itself and found no apparent results. Perhaps jscore was removed in an update to Qt (both of the example applications mentioned above link to Qt) as it seems to have it's own webkit library, libQtWebKit.

They always kick off in Workspace 1, I want them in specific spaces.

View 5 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.04 fresh install on eee 900. I had previously tried Cairo-Dock and AWN (successfully but I like that DockbarX is integrated into the panel) I installed Dockbarx like so:

DockbarX was working.
Then I uninstalled Cairo and AWN with Synaptic.I got a notification of an error in the panel saying I had broken packages - see broken package filter to check it out.I can't find filters in Synaptic.Then I noticed DockbarX was empty (and I had pinned Firefox to it) So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling via terminal. No problems with that but when added it to the panel again it was still empty . I rebooted several times during these attempts.

i installed windows xp last night on vbox useing ubuntu 1004 as the host os
i went to try to open a port for winmx 2.6 and its timeing out so i looked @ the ip and its completely diffrent from my host os ip so how would i allow out going connections in windows xp running under vbox
I did an automatic update and rebooted this morning and I now have a bit of a nightmare situation where I can't open the majority of applications, including the terminal. When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).
EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.
Is there a way (in Ubuntu) to open applications automatically after login (and maybe after a couple of seconds) so that they are automatically placed (in sequence) on a particular portion of the screen and assigned to a particular desktop number?

After upgrading GNOME to 2.32 in my openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 running graphic applications with sudo is impossible. (that means it worked before upgrading GNOME)

I know that bash can suspend and resume processes, but I am interested in forking and resuming them from different bash instances. So, for example, forking a gui app started from the console so that it will not crash when the terminal is closed. I currently know about screen, which can work, but I was wondering if there was a way similar to Ctrl+Z, bg and fg.

I have wrote a 1 line command that parses a file, locates the IP Address in the file and then trims the output the way I want it, and then sorts numerically and by uniqueness and then >> appends to output.txt
I can get all the IP's into 1 file "output.txt", but what I am really looking for is some type of way to create a text file, for each IP it finds labeled xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.txt and also put that ip address into that file..
