View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to key information into an OpenOffice spreadsheet that is being viewed in another application, typically Firefox. Both windows are sized such that they fit on the screen at the same time. Prior to a week or so ago, this was very straight forward. Now when I click on an app in the Task Manager after opening OpenOffice, other open apps are minimized - sometimes all of them, sometimes just the most recent. I usually have Dolphin, a terminal window, Firefox, OpenOffice and sometimes a spreadsheet open. A friend who is far more familiar with Linux than I, suggested that the memory manager may have gotten confused and that logging out should clear this up. I tried that to no avail, as well as rebooting. I've also looked through the options in each of the apps that I've got open to see if there's any obvious user options that might be affecting this. I've found nothing.

I have a desktop computer and a NAS, running Kubuntu & Ubuntu. I use WOL to wake the NAS and then mount the drives (NFS) on my desktop.
I've placed an icon on my KDE desktop which wakes the NAS and mounts the drives, this works great, but I've set it to run in terminal so I can enter the password for mounting the drives. This leaves me with an open window which I don't want to close because the NAS is set to shutdown 15 minutes after ssh logout.
My question is how can I minimize the open terminal window to an icon on my taskbar?
I got opensuse11.3 with KDE desktop. After installation everything was ok, but all of a sudden the right hand side of the taskbar (system tray) went in towards the left and I can't see the open windows in the task bar. I have gone through the panel settings and everything but the problem remains.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am relatively new to scripting, but I was wanting to open a firefox window from a bash script, but have it open, then minimize. In the script, I have a single instance of: firefox & but is there a way to minimize it, versus have it displayed on the screen? I was wanting the command terminal to remain visible and it can't since the firefox window is open in front of it. I looked all over the place, including the man pages, but to no avail. I can make the height and width changes, but no minimize. Either that, or to be able to bring the terminal window back to the front automatically.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 all of a sudden, the task manager or task bar, keeps changing length. The individual window "buttons" themselves keep changing size - flashing even, and the space between them also changes. It is driving me nuts! The little system tray(?) icons no longer appear in the system tray, but all stacked on top of each other in the top left corner.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis for Kernel 2.6.29.6. I'm trying to code a kernel module that displays process information.
how to count opened file descriptors per task. I have been able to write a module that lists all the current process names along with their pid number in /var/log/messages. Basically, I cycle through the ring of processes using the macro for_each_process(task) and printk the comm and pid of each task. I'm trying to see how many file descriptors each task has open. I've been reading up in books and all over the internet. At first I thought I needed to access max_fds under files_struct, but that just lists the maximum number of file descriptors that can be opened per task, which by default is set at 256. I then thought about counting the elements in the fd_array. But then I learned that every task's fd_array is initially set at 32. Now I know that I need to access open_fds of type fd_set * in files_struct. open_fds is a pointer to all the open file descriptors. The problem is that I don't know how to access a pointer of type fd_set.
Is there a good guide or book that really focuses on type fd_set and open_fds? Every book and resource I've read never really go into depth on this. relationship between files struct, open_fds, and the open file descriptors in task?
Anybody knows how to fix overlapping tasks in KDE system taskbar? Here System Monitor overlaps with digiKamWorkaround to rearrange icons - start any new task.Sorry for taking real photo of the screen. When I do PrintScreen KSnapShot task appears in the list and makes all task to rearrange. The resulting screenshot contains already fixed view.

I'm using the latest nvidia driver for my asus gtx460 (260.19.12)Have already verified rendering is enabled, uninstalled nouveau & blacklisted, mesa glx is installed, no errors (that I can see), etc. When I run apps, even a gl screensaver, it will hang my whole box. To the point where I can't even, ctrl + alt + F1 (or F2, F3), for cli. So no command line output. And I've tested this in World of Padman, Alien Arena, Call of Duty 4 (under Wine), even Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Apps will start, but any gl content will quickly hang. This is the first time running ubuntu x64, and a new box

I accidentally erased my "panel" and now I cannot minimize windows however they remain open. I have a down arrow, an X and a - on the top of my pages when I hit the - the page disappears but still stays active, example im on ..... and I hit that expecting to minimize but the page closes and I cannot retrieve it but whatever I was viewing continues to play. when I hit the down arrow the page just kinda shuffles to a different side of the screen and is basically useless.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to create a bash script that will open firefox, evolution, gedit (specific file), etc. For the most part it works, but after it opens evolution or gedit, it pauses execution, until I close that app down.
I don't want to have this done at login, i want to pick and choose when I open them all.
I use the workspaces a lot.It helps me de clutter my desktop. One thing that does bug me about it though, is that every time I start my PC or laptop I have to move the auto start apps to the workspace I want them on. They always kick off in Workspace 1, I want them in specific spaces.

View 5 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.04 fresh install on eee 900. I had previously tried Cairo-Dock and AWN (successfully but I like that DockbarX is integrated into the panel) I installed Dockbarx like so:
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dockbar-main/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install dockbarx
DockbarX was working.
Then I uninstalled Cairo and AWN with Synaptic.I got a notification of an error in the panel saying I had broken packages - see broken package filter to check it out.I can't find filters in Synaptic. Then I noticed DockbarX was empty (and I had pinned Firefox to it) So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling via terminal. No problems with that but when added it to the panel again it was still empty . I rebooted several times during these attempts.

I did an automatic update and rebooted this morning and I now have a bit of a nightmare situation where I can't open the majority of applications, including the terminal. When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).
EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.
Is there a way (in Ubuntu) to open applications automatically after login (and maybe after a couple of seconds) so that they are automatically placed (in sequence) on a particular portion of the screen and assigned to a particular desktop number?

I have my task list in evolution (mainly so it can sync with my phone and online task list) but I always forget to look at the task list. Is there an application or plugin which periodically displays the contents of the tasklist or even better, it briefly displays the most urgent/important tasks when I login? Or anything else which automatically displays the most important tasks. Currently I have to open the task list and look at them (which I usually forget). I do not mean some kind of alarm when the task is due but more a daily reminder of what to do.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed opensuse 11.4 on a remote server. It has GNOME installed as a desktop. The problem I am experiencing is that when logged in through VNC, most of the GUI apps are not functioning, especially ones that require root privs. Example: The Add/Create users context does not function. After you supply root pw, nothing happens. If you launch it from a terminal, you see this:
jjmuw@g01:~> xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2 users

Followed by a hang. This is also affecting things like the Xen configuration contexts (creating/managing VMs).
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome 2.30.
I remove the applications which i don't use from main-menu. Now i can not see them from "open with" menu when i right click to a file.
Also it will be very nice if Ubuntu can show me on the "open with" menu the possibilities of applications which can open properly the file type which i want to open. I try to configure with ubuntu-tweak's "file type manager" but it is not possible to configure all of file types. I think Ubuntu's applications must to know which applications has to show for which file types. And i don't know how to do that. I need an application like this : url
I get a new user from the same OS, and i see that the same problem still there... For example many many compressed files, audio or graphic files are not associated with vlc or gimp.
I try to configure from system files of gnome but it is very complicated.
