General :: Macbook Can't Recognize Partition At Startup

I'm using an Intel-based macbook, I made a new partition with BootCamp, after that I inserted debian installation CD, deleted the FAT32 partition that was made by BootCamp, made 3 new partitions:
/ ex3
/home ex3
and a swap partition,
after installing debian, I restarted macbook, but it couldn't recognize linux partitions, in Mac OSx I can't find any of these partitions as startup disks, and I can't mount them in Disk Utility, How can I access these partitions? how can I boot to debian?

I am trying to install fedora10 on my desktop with 320gb HDD, Intel Dualcore, Biostar mother board, 1 GB RAM. I installed fedora many times, now my PC is connected to a SAMSUNG B2030 monitor which is of size 20.5 inches. This time, Anaconda is falling back to text mode as it cannot recognize the VGA. Monitor CD is along with me but it didnot contain any linux drivers. (Drivers for xp are installed). What is the solution? Should I switch to the latest fedora13?

I have a 3 year macbook with Windows 7 installed as 40gb and OS X as 40gb (80gb HD). I want to remove OS X as Im at the limit of 40gb on Windows and I have not logged on to Mac OS X since installed Win7 (dont flame me).
So I want to delete OS X partition and expand my win partition to 80gb BUT I still would like to be able to regularly (once a week/month) backup my Windows 7 partition - its took a while to setup everything up right - not just docs and programs - so when the hard drive dies I want to be able to restore the partition and boot away, (the daily volatile bits I can pull down from dropbox and project from soure control). With Mac OS X I could use Winclone - and this worked flawless last time the HD failed with XP but with the absence of OS X I will need something else.
Im thinking can I use a Linux Live boot CD along with an external USB hard drive. Boot from CD and then dd? the partition to the USB?
What linux distro live CD should I use? I say dd as if I know what am taking about (I dont) is this the best way to backup a partition (when it will be restored to same hardware as bootable) ? What command?

I'm planning to install Debian along with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and share it's home directory, of, if possible, at least, create a new partition only for my mp3 files.

How to make my GNOME desktop auto recognize the NTFS partition of the USB drive.
On command line I can do the following perfectly:

All files permission on the drive is 777. I can read, I can write, do whatever I want.
But in GNOME Desktop environment, when the USB drive is plugged-in, the partition is auto-mounted with other options:

All files permission on the drive is now 555. I can't write to it anymore. I saw a post earlier having similar mount result, but this one is USB drive though.
So how to configure GDE mount automatically with my intended mount options?

Lucid 10.04 and 'Startup disk creator' is fussy which iso's it will pick up.I have tried on my PC, laptop and Netbook all running Lucid and tried several variations of formatting a Usb flash stick using gparted. I have tried fat 32 and fat 16 and have removed lpa(?) and boot flags. I have transfered the download to my 'home' directory and simplified the name of the iso to lupo.iso (yes an Ubuntu derivative). Yet the software will not recognise this iso but strangely enough will recognise other ubuntu isos in the same directory. The usb stick was previously set up as a bootable linux Puppy system so I know the stick is OK.

I have two hard drives in my desktop. One HD has a working Ubuntu system-hence the ability to post here- and the other contains Windows XP Pro. When the XP drive crashed I was able to re-install an image I had saved using Acronis. Unfortunately the dual-boot option at startup is no longer available. I can only boot to Ubuntu. Not so bad really but there are some programs on Windows that I need to use. Is there any way, using Grub perhaps, that I can reconfigure an MBR to include the second hard drive and the Windows system?

I've been trying to install 11.04 on my MacBook Pro5,2, (already have Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Windows 7 installed) but every time I get to screen where it asks me to install, the installation GUI doesn't see my partitions. The strange thing is that if I run sudo fdisk -lu /dev/sda I get:

Seems like everything is fine, no sectors are overlapping, and fdisk definitely recognizes the partition.

I was using GParted Live to resize my Windows XP partition on my desktop aaaaand... it rebooted properly and now says "no such partition" and won't boot from anything. It doesn't even recognize my dell utilities partition. I can boot to the GParted Live disk - and that is all. So I'm relatively certain that I just destroyed something

I have installed grub.efi in the ESP partition which is able to load ubuntu 9.04.I think it works with fedora 11 x64 as well. And I tried to install fedora in the partition which was used to install ubuntu. But the installer keep telling me that ext4 partitions are not bootable. But I don't need to install a boot loader on that partition

I am trying to install kubuntu on my macbook. I am able to boot from the CD and install fine, but when I try to boot from the linux partition the cursor blinks for a while, then the screen goes blank.I have used the rEFIt partition utility, but when I try to reinstall the grub bootloader as described here: it says "sudo: grub: command not found"When it try "grub", it says:"The program 'grub' is not currently installed. I have installed Ubuntu on my netbook, an early Eee PC, and the battery ran out of charge. I didn't know that however and turned on my netbook. It started booting up traditionally, but then it just spit out a whole bunch of code:Quote:

A while ago I successfully dual booted my system with Vista and Ubuntu. then Windows 7 came out and I wiped Vista off my laptop and installed Windows 7. The problem is that my laptop no long knows that there is a whole other operating system sitting on the hard disk and I can't access it. What can I do to fix this?

I have been using fedora 12 for quite some time. When i first installed Fedora on my new system i created 2 ntfs partitions on the hard disk using mkfs.ntfs and in the space at the end of the disk i have Fedora. recently i tried installing Win7 but it didnt recognise the partitions even tho they are NTFS. I had to format 1st partition from setup to install Win7. After boot i find that Win7 doesn't recognise the 2nd partition as welL. The partitions are working fine in Fedora.

I'm trying to install Fedora 10 from a USB memory stick on which i've installed Fedora-10-x86_64-DVD.iso and, early in the process of configuring the installation, i get messages about both my IDE hard drives having unrecognizable partition tables:
"The partition table on device sda (... my disk data ...) was unreadable. To create new partitions it must be initialized, causing the loss of ALL DATA on this drive."
Same for sdb.
My PC currently runs Fedora Core 4 (yes i know i should have gotten around to upgrading my OS earlier) and yes it recognizes both hard drives just fine.
The answers I've found on the web suggest to backup my drives and repartition. I'm not too hot on that "solution".
explain why a F4 partition table is not recognized by F10?
BTW, I've recently upgraded my motherboard, processor, DVD drive, regrouped both my IDE drives on the same bus, ... I consider it a miracle F4 still runs on this PC (although F4 does not support the motherboard's graphics card, so no X11).

I have two hard drives, a 320GB and a 1.5TB. The first hard drive has two windows partitions. The first one is the main vista partition and the second one is one for factory restore (its an HP pavilion).
So wanted to install both ubuntu and ubuntu studio on the second hard drive, so I allocated about 1TB as an ntfs partition that I wanted to be accessible by both vista and ubuntu. So I have 400GB left for both distros. I have partitioned off two 40GB partitions for the two roots and I'm sharing one large home parititon and I put a swap partition at the end of the disk.
After I got through the second installation (ubuntu studio) vista no longer recognised the ntfs partition on the second disk. I thought maybe the install botched the boot sector, so I used testdisk to try to fix it, but it hasn't done any good. I do not want to format the second drive again because I have data on there I transferred over from an old hard drive before I installed ubuntu.
I tried to 'initialise' the disk in vista, but that just wiped the partition table so I had to fix that with testdisk on a live cd
Does anyone have any idea how i could possibly fix this problem or what winblows is thinking? I want to be able to read the partition in windows.

This is my first time to post a thread.I'm not native English-speaker,so my English is poor.And I wish you can understand what I mean.
I have used wubi for months.Today I decide to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my harddisk.I create a liveUSB to install 10.04.But the problem during installing is when partition detecting,the windows partition can't be detected.It shows 'Ubuntu' on /dev/sda1,but in fact it is the windows partition.I ignore it and go on.After all done,10.04 can work well,but windows can't be booted.
Then I try to use 9.04 CD to install,and it shows 'Widows NT/2000/XP' on /dev/sda1 correctly.At last,both 9.04 and windows xp can be booted.
Is it the problem involving the difference between CD and liveUSB,or 10.04 and 9.04?
Can you tell me why and give me a hand?

So I am experimenting with other linux distros.....I just installed a small partition with OpenGEU, the one still based on Ubuntu.....now it wont recognize Mint. Ubuntu Studio is next on my list, but before I invest any more work I want to make sure I can add more partitions to grub, not just the most recent linux partition...
I think that future distros of linux should have a fix for this....if you install linux it should detect every other operating system on the disk, not just windows plus the most recent linux install.
install /boot separate? I always create a / and /home partition but never separate boot. Does that make life easier?

I have a sandisk sd card with 3 partitions two ext2 and one fat 32 partition for some reson Ubuntu only automounts two ext2 partitions. I've tried inserting another card with only one fat32 partition and the system doesn't mount it. Both cards are visible in gparted byt not in "Places" menu.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my WinXP desktop computer. I used the LiveCD and manually configured the partitions. I resized my XP partition (the entire SATA HDD) and created a 37GB partition for Ubuntu, as well as a 3GB swap file. I installed the boot loader on the Ubuntu partition. But BIOS doesn't recognize that the drive has separate partitions, and I can't boot into it from Windows either. I know I didn't modify WinXP's MBR, but should I have? I didn't know where it was.
I booted into the LiveCD again, and went into the disk manager. I Edited the Ubuntu partition and saw a checkbox that said "Bootable". I checked it and hit apply, hoping that might do it. I waited twenty minutes and the little circle was still spinning with no indication that it was actually doing anything or any warning of how long it would take, so I rebooted. Still no luck.
Someone told me that Ubuntu sometimes won't be bootable if you have both SATA and PATA drives in the system, which I do (although both XP and Ubuntu are on the same, SATA drive) and gave me a page that told me to use Grub4Dos. I fiddled around with that, only to come onto the Ubuntu website and find out that the page they gave me was outdated, before Ubuntu used GRUB2.

I had Windows 7 ultimate installed on my netbook and installed Ubuntu 10.10 using the 'Install alongside other OS's' option which put windows onto another partition and created one for ubuntu.
Anyway I've tried reinstalling the grub but I never get a grub boot menu when I boot it up and the grub won't recognize the windows install

I've tried to run a Clonezilla VM using vmplayer. All works fine except when I get to the cloning section. I have three partitions on the HD; partition A, B and C.
A = Partition to clone
B = Partiton onto which the clone image of PartA is to be saved
C = OS partition which is running the Clonezilla VM.
I would like to save the partition as an image but when it actually comes to the nitty gritty of partition cloning Clonezilla does not recognise PartA or PartB. I get error massages along the lines of "No unmounted partitions found." When I drop into a shell prompt the fdisk -l output shows nothing. However, running from the liveCD it recognises both these along with PartC. Is there a way of carrying out the cloning using this method by tweaking vmplayer settings or is the project just not possible ?

Whilst in fedora i deleted files off my second hard drive to free up some space, i deleted over 10gb worth of data. When booting back in to my windows partition it doesnt recognize the free space instead it thinks the hard drive is still full even though i deleted the data.Not to sure as to why this has happened, as im sure i have deleted stuff of this hard drive before from my linux partition.Any help would be greatly appreciated as my 70gb hard drive is full with only 20gb of data to show for it

I have been upgrading from 9.04 to 10.04. Now, I want to install 10.10 from the beginning without losing the data in my current partitions but when I run the Maverick installer it recognize my disk as a whole with no partitions. From another posts, I suspect that the problem is in the partition list because it seems to be a duplicate partition but don't know how to fix it. This is the fdisk output:

I recently have installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Netbook Edition in my personal netbook. The thing is that I had installed Windows 7 in the hard disk drive so I decided to install Ubuntu alongside with it. After the process of installation everything was cool but I hadn't the Grub working. I then pressed the Shift button during the booting process so I got the Grub menu but it didn't show the Windows 7 partition. The Windows installation was not erased because its file system is present in Nautilus. I have tried reinstalling the Grub a thousand times but nothing changes. I have attached the results of the boot info script so you can have some info about my booting configuration.

I've migrated back to Fedora as I am just displeased with the majority of debian based distros and Sabayon at the moment. Fedora has grown up quite a bit since FC9 and I'm here to stay. I keep all of my media and documents on a seperate partition on my disk and am wondering how I can have it set to automatically mount it upon startup. It gets kind of annoying having to re-enter my password every reboot just to mount the partition that 90% of my time is spent on.
