My question is that i have a laptop with windows vista on it and my main box ubuntu 10.04.
I know there is a way to set up the printer on the vista laptop to print through my box.
I remember part of it, something like :640/my printers/linux printer/hp?
Also how do i set up the linux box to allow the vista machine see the printer?
I'm using Slackware64 13.0 on a laptop. I've set up the network printer which lives on a Windows Vista machine (not my choice) in the family room. I am able to send print jobs to the printer. That part works fine, but the printer does not print. It simply stacks up print jobs with "error - printing" in the status of the first print job.I think I understand what's happening. I'm sending the print jobs to the print server as "Guest" and I have no guest account activated on the vista machine. I'm sitting here racking my brain (ie googling my goddamn fingers into stumps) trying to figure out how to send the jobs to the print server as indubitableness.
For the goddamn life of me I can't figure out what I need to do to send these print jobs as a specific user. I've tried adding "valid users = indubitableness" to smb.conf and I've tried using the -U flag when running lpadmin to add the printer to my system in the first place.The configuration wizard for windows doesn't appear to have any options to enable guest access or to add a specific remote location and/or user to the allow list.I'm at a loss and I'm losing my goddamn mind.
my 64 bit XP/fedora 12 box prints fine to a shared printer when I am in XP. The HP color lasterjet CP1215 printer is hosted by a 32 bit vista machine. I can located the printer on the network from Fedora 12 using the add a pinter utility, but I cannot print. I get no error message on the linux machine, but the "submitted " dialog box never goes away (not sure if it is supposed to go away). On the vista machine in the printers dialog box it says "remote downlevel document" in the document name section and "0kb" in the size section, then goes away. the printer does not make any noise.

I got it to work using another driver, but not the 'correct' one for this printer. I have searched a bit and don't see anything about ubuntu 10.10, just older versions. Or should I just network her to my printer....?
View 5 Replies View RelatedOur one remaining problem seems to be printing. She has an HP OfficeJet 6500 USB printer. We have the computer conntected. Strangely, when I boot from the CD the printer shows up as installed even though I did nothing to install it. After having submitted a print job it shows the printer status as "idle" and the print queue is empty. I tried deleting that printer and re-installing. The installation went as one would expect. However the results are the same. I'm beginning to think that somehow the problem is related to the fact that we are operating from the live CD. getting this thing to print from the live CD.

Installation of network printer:
I followed what I believe to be standard procedure: Using the Unity interface, I opened up the Printing application. I then clicked "Add". Then "Network Printer", then "Find Network Printer". I typed in the Host (192.168.1.6; static assignment made while in Vista via iomega's software). Then it searches. It fills in its own blanks thus: Under the heading "Devices" > "Network Printer" it says, "JetDirect (192.168.1.6) (192.168.1.6)". In the panel on the right it says, "Host: 192.168.1.6:631/ipp", then, "Queue: ipp". I click "Verify..." and an error message pops up that says, "Inaccessible The print share is not accessible"
If I proceed forward, I can install drivers, but nothing will ever print. Following procedure, I click to print a test page. The job is sent to the queue and then I get this Printer State message: "Stopped - Destination printer does not exist!"
My LaserJet is connected to an old desktop machine that has it shared. The configuration on that desktop is correct, since I have been printing through it from other Windows machines for a long time (and it still works now).
I recently started dual-booting Ubuntu 10.10 on my otherwise Windows laptop, and I've gotten everything basically working how I like it, except that I can't get connected to that printer.
The Vista machine is at IP address 192.168.0.103, and the printer is shared as LaserJet. It's set up with workgroup MSHOME.
When I go to add a printer in Ubuntu, I click the Browse button under "SMB Printer," and I see the MSHOME workgroup, but when I try to expand it, there's nothing inside.
If I try to type in the address directly (smb://192.168.0.103/LaserJet), the Verify button tells me "Print Share Inaccessible, Connection timed out." Note that I can ping 192.168.0.103 fine. I can continue through the rest of the wizard, but I obviously can't print anything out after I finish the setup, since the connection is failing for some reason.
There is no username or password required to see the shared printer.
Any idea what could be going on here? I'm kind of at wit's end here, and I'd love to be able to ditch Windows--with the obvious exception of Starcraft II, of course
I am trying to figure out how to make my computer use my network in order to print thru. Another PC, (running windows vista) I know that the printer works, that I can print from another computer (because I have done it using windows XP) but I can't figure out how to print with fedora over my network.

It prints a test page just fine but when I tell it to actually print a document, the status says: "Access denied, unable to connect" I have 2 printers connected and they installed fine in Vista one is a HP LaserJet 2100 series and the other is an HP Photosmart C5280. I have a HP printer (LasterJet 3005n) attached over a network. I am running 9.10 on a Dell Optiplex. I did not have this problem in 9.04. I had this problem immediately after I did a fresh install of 9.10. I can print open office documents without any problem, just not pdfs. I have the same problem with my serval laptop (also running 9.10).

The only thing that I can find says to use a driver 3.10.2 but all I can find is 3.10.6 and 3.10.6.15. But non of this is working. XP prints fine but I want Ubuntu to work fine too. This is why I bought this printer in the first place.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on an emachine with a celeron micro processor and it has 2 gig memory. I have tried the usb cable in every usb slot available and ever thing else. When I go go print a job the hp panel shows that job is sent to printer and that the printer is printing it. Unfortunately it never get printed. I found drivers for this printer online (driver is called UFR_II_Printer_Driver_for_Linux_V200_uk_EN). The drivers installed without any problems.
I can go through cups and add the printer successfully. I can even print a test page that shows up in the queue as completed. However, nothing comes out of the printer. Also, there is nothing in /var/log/cups/error_log to show that an error has occurred.[URL]..

SAMBA sees the printer on the network , verifies the printer and the driver loads.
Everything goes along just fine until "print test page" No go.
The printer shows up in the "Printing -local host" window.
Under "printer properties" the "Make and Model"are showing the correct device in the correct location.
The "Printer State" shows "idle - /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"
Is there something I might have missed in the set-up?
I have an HP deskjet f4580 and I downloaded hplip and the printer prints when its plugged into the usb but not wirelessly. And I noticed an hp setup adhoc on my network connections but I couldnt get on it. I'm nearly certain its something I am missing just don't know what..? and I have Ubuntu 11.04

I have my office computer running Kubuntu, which also has the printer attached to it. My media machine downstairs is running Vista, which I'd like to be able to print and share files from. I've been doing some reading that you need to use Samba. So, I installed Samba through Synaptic, and it appears that nothing happened. So, I did some more googling, and found I had to install something about system-config-samba, so I did.
I now have a Samba icon under k-menu > System > Samba. However, when I click on this icon, nothing happens. It does nothing (just like clicking on the Network Manager icon, which does nothing as well). So, I am now utterly confused. Is there a way to change samba settings via gui? I'm not comfortable with typing unknown commands into the terminal, as usually there is no explanation as to what's going on. If there was a step by step explanation, that would be ok, but as of now, there is nothing. Is there a simple setup tool out there?
I have a HP c4100 series printer connected to my Ubuntu computer. This computer prints just fine. I also have a Windows Vista computer that's connected to the Ubuntu HP via CUPS (by installing network printer with path of http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:631/printers/printername). This computer also prints just fine. My problem is I just got a new Windows 7 laptop, and connected it to the HP via CUPS the same way as the Vista machine. It installed fine. However the Win7 Laptop will not print. When I try to print, it acts like it is going to print, but never gives an error and the file never makes it into the printer queue (on either the win7 or ubuntu machines, i have tried printing with both queues open to see what happens).
Things I have already changed:
On the Ubuntu machine:Changed all the printer settings on printer to allow any and all connections including printing from the internet.
Edited the /etc/samba/smb.conf to allow CUPS printing and allow guest access
On the Win7 machine:Fixed my LAN security settings (disabled require 128bit encryption, send LM and NTLM responses)
Reinstalled printer several times. I have googled this issue almost every day for a month and tried every setting that I have came across (changed them back if it didn't help). So far nothing has worked for me, and this is my last ditch effort to get this printer working. Does anyone know why I can not print from my Windows 7 machine to a printer connected to my Ubuntu machine? Especially when I CAN print from the UBUNTU and Vista machines.
I have an old desktop that I'm trying to set up as a home backup/print server. Backup was trivial, but am having issues getting the printing to work. The printer is connected to the server running Ubuntu Server 9.10 (no gui). If I access the printer via http://hostname:631/printers/, I am able to print a test page, so I know the printer is working; however, I am having no luck from Windows. Windows can see the printer when browsed via hostname, but I am unable to connect. Windows says "Windows cannot connect to the printer" without indicating why.

When I go to System Admin/Printing to add my printers, screen says I am not connected to localhost and I am unable to use Add printer. When I used version 9.10, I added a network + a local printer by this method but I'm not sure what I have done wrong this time around.
I have an HP F300 series all in one printer. Until about 2 months ago it worked fine in all variations. Now it wont print. I am using Super Os 9.10 version. The printer runs but doesn't print. It works fine in windows.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn Ubuntu 10.10, I have my printer, an Epson D120, shared. I can print from the computer itself, but other computers cannot print to it. Both Ubuntu and Windows machines have the printer successfully installed. They can access it, I can access CUPS from all these machines and the the job queue even reports the jobs sent from these computers. But the page count is unknown and nothing is printed, although it says the job is completed.
I'm quite desperate to get this to work. It would suck if I need to go back to Windows just because some minor thing goes wrong. I really don't understand why local prints are OK, but prints from the network are not working.

I have a windows 2008 server that has 2 printers attached, both are shared in the same way with the same access rites. One printer I can print to without any issues, I get prompted for my domain username and password then the job is processed, the other I can't print to. When printing a test page cups just ques the job and I get errors in the logs :

My HP Deskjet D-2660 will not print. I can print to file but not the printer. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and have no other problems. I have installed hpip and hpijs form HP and cups was made available via and upgrade. I have a lot of data from var/log/cups/error_log but don't know what it is supposed to say.
I can print to file and everything else I check seems to say that all is right. Is there any glaring faults that I should look for?? As I stated on the other post I get a message that the print job has been sent to the printer and then another message stating that the print job has completed. In system/administration/printing, the printer shows up properly and has a green check mark on it. Connected to localhost shows at the bottom of the little window. Under /printer it shows shared and enabled Then under printer/properties, it shows as the HP Deskjet D2600 series the location is given as john-desktop It defines the Device URI: hp:/usb/Deskjet_D2600_series?serial=CN9ANDF0ZT05C9 shows the Make and Model HP Deskjet d2600 Series hpijs,.. printer state: idle
Across the bottom it theoretically allows you to print a test page or clean the print heads. (won't print) On the printing-local host small page that opens under system/administration/printing there is no group under that heading only new group or new group from selection. I never named a group since I am the only user.
I have shut the printer down and disconnected the USB and rebooted. Then connect the power and plug in the USB cable I get all the same answers nothing appears to change. Here is some of the var/log/cups/error_log file. It does this over and over every minute same thing. The print que is empty from both administration and applications.
