I am interested in changing the Operating system on an old laptop of mine from Vista to Linux. Problem is I don't know anything about Linux. I have been told Fedora is a good distribution for me to get started with. uninstall windows and get started with Linux?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install a linux distrobution on a laptop that can only boot off a cd or harddrive (or network? not sure), except that it has no cd drive and no operating system. That's right, no floppy no USB no CD. I read on the internet a chap installed Ubuntu with these conditions by taking out the harddrive and installing an old copy of Ubuntu on it on another computer with a disc drive, and then putting it back in his laptop and upgrading.
Now I have installed DOS 7.10 before on this laptop hard-drive and it worked, but it wasn't very useful, being a text based system. I have tried installing Windows XP (only because I am familiar with it) but my installation CD is OEM, and doesn't seem to like it. So I put the ubuntu 4.10 cd in my desktop with the CD drive after clearing all data off the laptop hard-drive (DOS 7.10). Then the cd boots and I am given the menu to install ubuntu. So I press Enter, it starts installing and then freezes at the language selection screen. So what is my problem? I have pressed lots of keys in order to get some response, but nothing. I waited 10min for something to happen, but nothing did.
Will a Linux operating system lose data during a power failure as does a Windows operating system?
(If yes.) This has not come up before but I'm going to be doing some work I don't want to lose.
Could you either point me to a backup tutorial or give me the quick overview of preserving stuff with Ubuntu?
I am in the process of running some benchmark tests on a variety of RDBMS, I am testing three different client operating systems.Would it be terrible to partition the HDD and install Ubuntu, Windows 7 and Solaris 10? If I do not do this, I will likely have to re-install the O.S numerous times due to changes in the database server o.s as well. The same question goes for the server; would it drastically effect the performance to install 3 server o.s on one server?

hard disk is 250 gb
c-155gb , d which is for recovery is 10.6gb, e-46.8gb
and an unallocated disk of 20gb
tried to install fedora which couldnt recognize the hard disk partition got ubuntu and tried.. but i dont know where it got installed now my 20 gb unallocated disk is showing as two partitions one of which is 1 gb and the rest is 18gb. how to uninstall ubuntu now. i want to repartition it and install it in proper way is 20gb enough.
Is there a general how to for installing? I am wanting to install it on an older laptop and a question I also have is how to get it so it picks up the wifi or is Linux so on top of things that those drivers are already included?

Assume also that in about six months I want to give this computer to Mr. X, but I do not want Mr. X to know that I have been using ubuntu. I don't want to install anything over top of ubuntu, I just want the computer to be completely (or as nearly completely as possible) blank so that Mr. X cannot infer what I've been doing on it. The trick here is that I can't use operating system x_{1} to delete operating system x_{0}. I don't want Mr. X to know anything about which OS I have been using. Mr. X, by the way, is a sophisticated computer user but not particularly interested in tracking me down. Once he sees that the computer is blank Mr. X will just install his own operating system and everybody will be happy.

At the moment I am using AntiX Mepis. I switched to Linux because my Windows used to freeze all of a sudden after a few hourse or even minutes.
Now my Linux was quite stable for a few days but again, it freezes in a few minutes when I use a Window Manager. In the terminal without using any Window Manager it never freezes.

Since I will no longer use it as a desktop/working machine I'd like to set it up as a home server. However I can't decide which OS to use for that. I have access to all Windows Versions since XP/2003 (with the exception of Windows Home Server) and I have some knowledge using both Windows and Linux so that's not a problem on my choice.
