Ubuntu :: Running Already Installed Vista Through VirtualBox?

Aug 13, 2010

Is there a way I can run my Windows Vista operating system that is already installed, on a virtual machine while on Ubuntu? I don't want to keep rebooting. The only reason I have my Vista partition is for Maplestory. ( A game that has gameguard which can't run under wine)

Ubuntu :: Installing Vista With VirtualBox

Jun 10, 2010

"Why on earth are you trying to install Vista?!" I know, I know, I'd install XP if I had a disc. My computer came with Vista and I accidentally deleted it when I installed Ubuntu. Now I'm trying to run Vista as a virtual machine with VirtualBox, but I'm having a bit of a problem. I'm running Lucid, everything should be up-to-date. I set up everything in VirtualBox, hit start, and booted up with the CD. That's where the problems begin. First screen reads:

OpenSUSE :: Installing Vista In VirtualBox?

Jan 21, 2010

I installed VirtualBox, and I want to install Vista on it. I just have the copy of vista that came with my computer. I made the back up disks for it, and tried to use them to install it in the virtual box, but it said it was unable to install in that machine.

After that I looked in my windows partition and found the product ID for the vista copy. My question is: Can I download a copy of Vista and then use the product ID of my copy to make the installation in the VirtualBox? Are there any technical or legal reasons not to do this?

Fedora Installation :: VirtualBox Or Dual Boot Vista?

Sep 13, 2010

I have been messing around with F13 in VM VirtualBox for awhile now. I have read in some places that it is better to install F13 into its own partition on the hdd creating a dual boot system for, in my case, Vista and F13. Any truth to this? I have been having problems with system settings in F13 while using VB. i.e.: sometimes the system will see 3d support, other times it won't. Sometimes it will see ethernet eth0 and then other times it won't. All my hardware from my MB to Display is supported according to the documentation I have looked at.

Ubuntu :: Is It Possible That When Installed / It Deleted Vista?

Aug 14, 2011

I know next to nothing about ubuntu, but heres what's going on:So i have a Toshiba Satellite laptop that came with Vista on it, i hated Vista so i found out about Ubuntu and had downloaded it on my old laptop with XP so i could test it out first (I dualbooted it and could easily switch from XP to ubuntu) so i figured i would dual boot it with my Toshiba ( originally a vista ). Well i have had ubuntu on this computer for about a year i'd say and i have loved it and never thought Vista, but now i kind of want to at least use it again, but i have no idea. On my other computer it would take me to GRUB and i could just pick..but on this computer it only lets me use ubuntu..Is it possible that when i installed ubuntu it deleted vista?

First off, I don't know whether this is a Ubuntu error or a Virtualbox error or what, so I put this in General I installed Ubuntu 10.10 in a VirtualBox 4.0.4 VM. It all went well, and I set everything up, and customized Ubuntu- then shut the VM down. But I just booted the thing up, and I'm back at the Try/Install Ubuntu Screen.

Ubuntu Installation :: Get Vista Back After 10.10 Is Installed?

Apr 1, 2011

i had Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 160 GB HDD, 1GB RAM,INTEL DUAL CORE One of my friend told that UBUNTU is also a better OS and is an open source programme and u can use alternately both Ubuntu or VISTA,so i downloaded the disk image for Ubuntu 10.10 and burned it on a CD. i played it first on Windows Vista so it asked some 3 options of that i chose an option which downloaded Ubuntu Cd helper ,then i selected the first option something 'demo and install' it said to reboot the computer i reboooted it by selecting option reboot now and finishing it,after the computer was restarted.it asked me options for selecting Ubuntu or Windows Vista,i selected Ubuntu, i saw ubuntu is started which was the least time i could see a new Os is started, then i tought i should install it ,after selecting install it ,there came an option to drag option window's vertical line to right or left to increase or decrease the partition for ubuntu and on another side where something 'NTFS' was written i thought it must be for windows i dragged Ubuntu to maximum(5.23GB) left 37.3 GB for NTFS dev and i continued forward, left it for some process going on, the ubuntu was installed i think ,it also asked for some softwares to be installed i let them be installed and let all process finish after looking some featuers of Ubuntu ,i wanted to go back to windows vista but when i restarted computer it didnt asked me an option for selecting OS 'Ubuntu' or 'Vista' as it had asked me before. it directly started Ubuntu and asked for same options of software to installed ,i removed th CD and Tried again but still i couldnt see anything for Vista, when i checked properties of 'File System' it was written that 2.3 GB is covered and rest 157 GB is free,i m scared that i have deleted all the data of VIsta and Vista OS too,Can i get my VISTA BACK?,it is ok if i dont get anything of Ubuntu,i had many of important files too in my vista.is really my pc been formatted completely,?

from last week i m searching for its solution on internet i m frustrated a lot, many of the contain particular solution but for before versions of Ubuntu,i just want My vista and vista files back .One of the solutions also contained inserting DVD of vista and some procedure but my DVD player isnt working but CD player is working.i hope some of my inernet friends come to me as a saviour please.and one note i don't know what is GRUB or all other stuffs as i m knowing very bit of installing OS

Ubuntu :: Running VirtualBox Without Being Dependent On VNC

Jul 22, 2011

I currently run VNC with Gnome to run VirtualBox for my VPS's, but the problem I'm facing is that occasionally, the VNC session will die.

Ubuntu - 11.04 Server Edition.

I mean, randomly just die and then through up an error (specially connection refused 10061). The problem caused by this is that after I reset the VNC session, VirtualBox will have stopped and in turn the VPS's.

Is there any way I could run VirtualBox without being dependent on VNC + Gnome? Or at least, beable to stop VNC is dying on me?

If you require any more information, just ask and I'll reply within 5 minutes.

Ubuntu :: WindowsXP Running Slow In VirtualBox

Apr 1, 2011

I have WindowsXP installed under VirtualBox. Most of the time this works fine, but sometimes when I boot it up, it runs so incredibly slowly that it is unusable. My only solution to this has been to copy out the important data, restore the vdi file from backup and reboot. This usually solves the problem until next time. "top" shows that vbox is taking 35% of the memory (which is the amount I have allocated) and about 102% of my dual core's CPU. Everything else is running OK at the time.

Fedora :: F12 - Can't Get VirtualBox Running ?

Dec 29, 2009

I've been trying to get a converted virtual disk running in VirtualBox for the past several days. The VM begins to boot in a window but never gets past a black field. Until today the title bar would always change from "running" to "suspended" and just hang there. Now it just keeps saying "running" but never boots so I'm thinking the virtual disk may have become corrupted from repeated shutdowns without ever booting.

The User Manual at VirtualBox.org is of little help since it appears to assume you're using their packages. They also make references to utilities or scripts like "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv" that aren't even in the latest version so I think it hasn't been updated in a while.

There doesn't appear to be many hints in the Vbox.log either - couldn't find a way to get more verbose logging. Until now I'd get to this point and it wouldn't change until I shut it down:

I'm guessing the reason for the suspension was the message immediately above the notice. Now I just see the "unmapped device" message and the guest window says "running" indefinitely. I've attached copies of logs from a couple of sessions, one where it suspends itself (a vnc session) and another where it just stays running (a console session). Some googling suggested that the "unmapped device" message implies it can't find the boot drive or the boot sector on the virtual disk.

The host is normally accessed through a VNC session to a virtual console but VBox log messages indicate that it cannot determine the keyboard type when accessed this way so I now have to physically sit at the native console. If anyone knows of a way to overcome this limitation I'm all ears.

People don't usually respond to my threads so I'm basically talking to myself outloud here. I'll read it again later an maybe come up with something else to try. For now I'm going to remove all the VBox packages and re-install them, starting from scratch. If that doesn't get it working I'll delete the converted virtual disk and re-convert it from the original. If I still can't get VBox working after that I'll be forced to install VMware Server (resource hog). I'm getting desperate now...

[Background] Until a few weeks ago we were happily using qemu-kvm but encountered a bug when using the "-smb" argument after updating the host from Fedora 9 to 12. (re: F12: qemu-kvm with -smb hangs then dies) In an attempt to get our virtualized MS Windows Server 2003 back up and running I installed VirtualBox-OSE-3.0.10-1.fc12.x86_64 and friends over the Christmas break. I converted the qemu qcow2 image to raw then to vdi format using qemu-img and VBoxManage tools. There were no errors during the install of VirtualBox. In the beginning Bug Buddy notified of a crash whenever we started up VBox but after some digging and experimenting I believe the crashes were caused by running VBox in a VNC session instead of at the console. I haven't seen a crash when starting it in a native console session. Unfortunately, this means I can do very little remotely.
