I have read some of the installation guides offered here and attempted to install Opensuse via my USB stick without success. My question is there a setup.exe download offered for Vista users who would like to create a dual boot laptops? I have an 8Gb USB stick that was made "bootable" via some other forums, and I have downloaded the DVD ISO image of Opensuse 11.2 to my desktop.

Thing is, grub didn't install! I'm pretty sure a full install of ubuntu 10.10 in on a partition that I can't access. To complicate matters further, loading Vista necessitated a restart when it installed a "generic volume driver" by itself. Restarting vista doesn't show any difference (obviously since vista can't see linux formatted partitions).
This is not strictly a Linux question, although I am interested in any Linux cautions as to what to avoid that could impact my Linux on the computer in question. I have Linux (openSUSE-11.1) setup on dual boot with MS-Vista on a Dell Studio 1537 laptop. My wife is "fed up" with Vista, and has asked that I replace Vista with WinXP on this Laptop. I would like to do this over the Christmas holiday break. The laptop's 1 year support warrantee has expired. can someone explain to me the function of the two Dell /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 partitions ?
This laptop was purchased with MS Vista installed, with 3 primary partitions (small /dev/sda1 (called "Dell Utility" ),10GB /dev/sda2 (unknown - appears to be some sort of Dell backup/recovery partition ? ), /dev/sda3 (MS Vista which had the remainder of the 250GB drive, although I have subsequently reduced this to 69GB ).
Again, I note /dev/sda3 is the 69GB MS Vista partition (I reduced it to 69GB when I installed Linux (openSUSE-11.1)). I also believe it may be in /dev/sda3 where I should plan on installing winXP. Currently I have openSUSE-11.1 Linux in /dev/sda4 (divided into extended partitions, with /dev/sda5 (swap), /dev/sda6 (root), and /dev/sda7 (/home) for Linux and it works well. I plan to keep openSUSE-11.1 Linux when Vista is replaced by WinXP Can I remove and merge /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, and /dev/sda3 and replace them with one partition for WinXP ?
Or am I better OFF keeping /sdev/sda1 (Dell Utility) ? and am I better off to keep /dev/sda2 (some sort of Vista ?? recovery) ? and only put winXP on /dev/sda3 ? Aside from the MBR with Grub being destroyed (when I replace Vista with winXP) is there anything else I need to be careful of wrt keeping my openSUSE-11.1 Linux install on this laptop ?

tried to install fedora which couldnt recognize the hard disk partition got ubuntu and tried.. but i dont know where it got installed now my 20 gb unallocated disk is showing as two partitions one of which is 1 gb and the rest is 18gb. how to uninstall ubuntu now. i want to repartition it and install it in proper way is 20gb enough.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been using Linux for a few years, but am new to openSuse. I can use Ubuntu and Debian, but Suse is quite different. So my difficulties may seem childish. Problem 1 - Adding packages: I was able to download scim, because I know the name of the package. However, I cannot add languages. I have the extra languages c.d., but Yast will not install anything. I have a list of folders on the disc, but Yast thinks they are empty. I checked the package download area of Suse's web-site, but searching for languages turns up nothing. Apparently one needs to know the name of the packages. Is there a simple way to download packages? I should not need to know the name of every package. I found Chinese in the package manager (I have yet to try it, so do not yet know if I have what I want.), but cannot find Latin. I am not worried about German, because it should be part of the basic system.
Problem 2 - Adding simple things: I also cannot add founts. Does Suse have a permissions system like Debian and Ubuntu? I need to add these founts for the documents I work on. How do I gain access to the user foulders? With Debian and Ubuntu it is alt+F2, then, gksu nautilus. Does Suse use something similar? Problem 3: This problem is embarrassing. After freshly installing the system I played with desktop customisation. The result is strange. The only way I can have the cute green screen with the chameleon logo is with the "virus" theme. Ugly; do not want it. If I set it up the way it originally was with "image" I can only have a solid colour of my choice. Are there bugs in the system or am I hopeless?

are not the solution, because they install all distro packages, and I want only the base of desktops KDE and Gnome.
I can install LXDE with
apt-get install lxde
instead of
apt-get install lubuntu-desktop
I can install Xfce with
apt-get install xfce4
instead of
apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
However, I could not do the same with KDE and Gnome.

However in light of coming waves in the world of Gnome, I'm looking at my options in the event the Gnome shell 3 /Unity (which seem to me like a divided political party -my domain of geekiness stretches from history to computers- )go south.
I am looking for a non gnome options for then. For now i'm thinking of switching to KDE with OpenSuse (since Kbuntu seems poorly integrated from what i've heard) which I've found very little negative about other than the entire Microsoft>mono affair. What are the main difference in Kde and Suse when compared to run of the mill Ubuntu. this includes but is not limited to
>File management (will the configuration files in my home folder be compatible?)
>package management( How does suse go about doing this?)
>Window management (Windows style or mac style)
>miscellaneous commands commonly used (i.e sudo, mkdir, rm etc)
And finally how will it run on a laptop (Dell Inspiron 1545) that originally was built with vista in mind? Will compiz still work as well as it does in gnome? on a side note: how does kde differ from gnome other than appearance differ in relation to the average jane ( my sister, the other user of my laptop, though she mainly uses it for firefox)
I downloaded the 6.06 version of xubuntu because i have a laptop that doesnt support high graphics mode, and i wasnt able to figure out how to get it to run in low graphics mode. i figured that i would get a version from a while back, and then update it up to the current version. now, to the problem. I was able to upgrade 6.10, but now it says Ubuntu version 8.04 available, so i tried to update it. it gets most of the way through the part where it says calculating or something like that, and then it says: "Can't install 'xubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug." with an option that says close at the bottom. when i click close another window pops up that says: Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. Then the window just closes... anything that i could do to get rid of this problem? EDIT: Is there any way to update directly from an .iso file on the desktop?
I have installed Ubuntu (both 10.10 and 11.04 pre-release) on my laptop but my battery is not recognized and it is detected as a desktop system rather than a laptop. I have tried the cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state method but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an old old laptop and wanted to try Linux on it. I know next to nothing about Linux and slightly more than nothing about Unix. I made a pen drive with Ubuntu on it but the laptop won't boot from a USB device. So I downloaded several distros. I tried to boot a Ubuntu CD but it won't go past the splash screen. I tried DSL and it won't boot that either. So it's still running Windows 98SE at this point.
I tried several of the distro's under QEMU on my desktop and they seem to work... so the distro's are OK I think. Then I tried burning Knoppix on a DVD and booting the PC. I get the splash screen and it get to the point of saying something like "running dbus" and just hangs forever. I waited 40 minutes and still nothing. Tried booting the PC instead with a distro called "PCLinux Phoenix XFCE" that I burned onto CD. Once again splash screen and then nothing. Finally got a message saying it can't configure video and do I want to do it by hand. Really? Like I can do that. So I booted Win XP again and somehow THAT manages to run both monitors.
I was just wondering how I could remote control my desktop running windows7, I have enabled remote connections on my desktop. I also tried using the rdp program given with linux but am lost after that.

He asked me re remove Ubuntu which I thought I could do by simply using the recovery disk to restore the Laptop to the factory condition. This didn't work and I now find that Vista will not boot at all, although Ubunto does. How to remove Ubuntu and put this back to Vista only? I have what may appear an odd question. I have never installed Linux before, but I'm very impressed with the Ubuntu philosophy and this forum so I thought I'd give it a shot. I have a Windows wifi network at home with three laptops: One is Windows 7 and the other two are running Vista. My wife uses the Windows 7 laptop and I am using one of the Vista boxes, with the other one currently running in a spare room. I'd like to use the Vista box as a NAS (for our photos, backups, etc) but I need to keep Vista on it for a variety of reasons. Just hooking up the USB drives to the Vista laptop and sharing them out isn't really the way I want to go, and besides it wouldn't let me install Linux...
What I'd like to do is install Ubuntu into VMWare Player or VirtualBox and have it share out the USB drives on the network. The drives are NTFS and I'd like to keep them that way, because I'd like the flexibility of being able to plug them directly into one of our laptops if need be, or access them from the Vista host OS. I understand I'll need to install SAMBA to get this shared out, and I found a tutorial for that so I can try that out. I did download and play around with FreeNAS, but it has lots of issues with NTFS corruption whereas Linux has the NTFS driver for a few years now. I haven't tried an Openfiler appliance yet but that may be a plug-and-play option as well. My questions are:..........
I'm currently trying to add OpenSUSE to my Laptop which already has Vista Ultimate installed, hoping I will end up with a dual boot system. Currently, my HD is divided into four partition: Vista Ultimate with Bitlocker enabled needs two partitions - one for the unencrypted boot files, and one for the rest of the system. Then I have an unencrypted partition for data that I don't want encrypted, and finally the partition in which I plan to install Linux.
I have already installed OpenSUSE to that fourth partition, and it worked just fine. But now, I'd like to reinstall with LVM, so that I can use encryption as well. Upon installation, however, I get the following error: Code: Error Failure occurred during following action: Creating volume group system fromv System error code was: -4004 I'm wondering if this is because I'm running out of (primary?) partitions? Seems like LVM, just like Vista Ultimate, needs two partitions, one for the boot files and one for the rest of the system. I've read something about a PC drive only being able to hold four partitions, so I'm wondering if I need to get rid of that extra unencrypted partition I have in order to get OpenSUSE with LVM installed. Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I have still not been successfully able to boot from CD. No matter if it says to boot from CD/DVD Drive first, it skips on to Main driver and starts Windows. It's not because I didn't burn the .ISO image right, because it worked on my desktop, which is ALSO an Acer, an Acer Aspire T180. What I am trying to do, is install Windows XP Professional, and dual-boot it with my Windows Vista. Only thing is, it WON'T boot from CD.

i have 3 comps(running ubuntu 10.04) and a laptop(running vista sp2). i have installed samba on all ubuntu comps. i have a printer attached to one of the comps and it has been shared also the internet connection on that comp has been shared. all the computers are connected using lan cables through an ethernet switch. i also have a wireless router which is connected to the ethernet switch.
I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet.the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.all the systems have a static ip.
