Fedora :: How To Clone Image Of Drive With F12

Mar 19, 2010

I have a dual boot of winxp and fedora 12 on a sata laptop hdd in an external USB enclosure. I need to use the hdd for something else, so I want to create a clone image of the drive that I can later restore to a different hdd I put into the enclosure. What is the best method of doing this? Can I boot up into Linux on my external and create a single cloned image and save that image to the internal hdd on my computer? If so how do I do this? Is it a native function of Fedora or do I have to install a separate program?

Ubuntu Installation :: Image Clone Will Not Boot

Jan 18, 2011

My HDD crashed (it wasn't completely disastrous, though). I was able to get my Ubuntu 10.10 partition of the disk with dd_rescue. I can see all of the data in the partition and everything. dd_rescue reported that there were no errors. Now, I have a fresh HDD, and I copied the image that I created with Gparted, and turned the boot flag on. I turn my system on, and all I get is a flashing cursor in the corner of the screen.I get the feeling that this would be easy for a seasoned user, but I'm not sure where to go. I originally got some information about cloning partitions here: [URL] But, it doesn't tell you how to reload the image after you make it.

Ubuntu :: Make A Mirror Image 'clone' Of Flash To Another?

Nov 6, 2010

In the end, with much gnashing of my teeth, I just started over and created a new 4gb flash. And, as one helper told me, it was truly easier a second go around. Not quick, mind you, but easier Now that I've got my flash somewhat stable, I'd like to know how to make a mirror image 'clone' of this flash to another, just like it. Between my Broadcom drivers, nVidea drivers, updates and flash/java, I've gotten pretty protective of this little flash drive! I've head 'dd' will do it, but, as a newb, is their an application or tool that might make the job easier.

General :: Create An Image Of Hard Drive?

Jun 14, 2011

I've performed a clean install of Linux on my system, and would like to create a snapshot of my whole disk so that I can go back to a fresh state immediately.

I used to use DriveImage XML and it was a FANTASTIC program, but unfortunately the boot CD containing it can only be created by having Windows installed. So it might be time to explore a new program that is equally simple and effective as that one.

I'd like your recommendations of imaging programs that are free, and that work off a boot CD/DVD (because the live backup thing generally takes much longer for imaging an entire disk).

One thing I liked about DriveImage XML was that it stored the backup in a fairly readable format, so if one day DriveImage XML were no longer available you wouldn't lose your backed up data. Any such programs?

Also, would these programs work for a drive that contains an encrypted root partition (i.e. enabling the encryption checkbox in the CentOS installation)?

General :: Create An Image For A 300GB Hdd Drive Over The Internet

May 14, 2010

I want to make an image of a 300GB hdd and I'm looking for a program that can do this.

There's one hdd with one single partition, 300GB size and I want to create an image of the hdd. To make things more clear, I want a mirror of a hdd.

Thing is, I have a server machine over the internet, which has a 300GB hdd single partition and I want to copy its contains, including OS.

I know Acronis, I worked with it before, but... idk if it has a gb limit when creating a image of a hdd. Acronis can backup/restore images of a hdd via internet, if you have an acronis server.

Let's put it this way, I don't have time (liek always... sorry 'bout that, but I'm not lazy, I just don't have time ) to search for a program and to make tests, and I would like a little help, maybe point to a program / solution that you guys have been tested.

- Remember it's a single 300GB hdd with a single partition. I want to copy the hdd over the internet, that's why I'm pointing to a program that can makes an image of that hdd over the internet.

Like... it's not that I want especially a program that can do this, maybe there's other solution aswell. Just feel free and share your solution/opinion whatever.

General :: How To Create Disk Image Of Actual Data

Nov 15, 2010

Suppose I have a 80 GB hard disk (sda) with 4GB of contents. Using a dd to copy to a different disk

Code:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb
copies all the contents (including free space). So sdb also needs to be 80GB.

You will notice that in VMWare or VirtualBox disk images, it is possible to set the disk to use only the amount of space of actual data. So a 80GB virtualbox/vmware image with 4GB of contents will be 4GB.

Is it possible to do that with an actual hard disk (sda) image? I want to create an image of an actual hard disk, copy it to DVD and transport it (in mail) for restoration on another computer (having same hard disk).

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Backup Or Clone

Aug 9, 2011

I have a file server running in an office that's mostly used for file sharing and a scanner saves pdf files to the server. I'm running the latest LTS ubuntu server edition and I really only have ssh installed and samba. My question is that I've done so much to the server as far as premissions and configuration and I'd like to make a clone of this to another computer and not sure how I would do this?

I'm not sure if clonezilla or something like this can perform this task? I basically just have a very old computer and now I have another very old computer that I want to make into a spare just incase something happens to the original. Any recommedations on how I would accomplish this?

Is it possible for me to hook them up on the secondary NICs and boot the second machine with Knoppix or something else, and easily tell it to duplicate the first machine onto the second, down to the last bit, or do I need to make all the partitions beforehand and dd each one separately?
