I have a Toshiba Satellite L55 S5105 Laptop with "Atheros AR8152 PCI-E fast ethernet controller"

I have ubuntu9.10 running on this[dual boot].
For some reason there is no wifi and ethernet connectivity.
Are the drivers not installed? where and how do I start to troubleshoot this problem.
My VX3000 webcam seems to be recognized by skype and kopete, however the image is terrible (green screen with some colour-ful dots at the top).

I am working on a project to build an embedded board with WIFI connectivity. My present status:
- I have a embedded development board TS7200 .
- It has USB and Ethernet Port.
- I am able to get port Linux on it and run program to communicate between devices and a computer using socket programming and Ethernet.
I need help in deciding how to get WIFI connectivity to the board. I guess it would mostly be using WIFI dongle? Any suggestion for a WIFI dongle?How should I get it working? Where should I look for proper reading material? I am am planning to do some basic program practice using WIFI on my laptop. How can I do that ?
i have tested 30 systems all support my card, ts a edimax EW-7128g pci adapter.Debian will not boot from usb... it needs a CD ROM? I am starting to think that Debian is a pile of shit... i am looking for a stable system so can play my video games on... Enemy Territory, open arena, ect.. i been using Ubuntu for 5 years, used suse for 2 years in early 2000+.. i have never used Debian, it aslo give some kind of error during boot about USB not support or some crap... i am starting to think it don't support crap... i noticed it supports a lot cpus... but does it have a lack of hardware support? my system is 5 years old...
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have an iphone, I am trying to get internet connectivity to that phone through wifi. I dont have a wifi router. But i do have a laptop with wifi card. I am connecting to internet via cable modem. In win7 I used to create an accesspoint and do the ics from ethernet card to share via wifi card. It used to work perfectly.
Now as I am sing ubuntu, i want to do the same. I have intalled firestarter, and shared the internet connection through wifi card(wlan0).After this I created an accesspoint using the gnome network applet. Now i can connect my ifone to ths accesspoint. But there is no internet connectivity in my fone.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10. I was using iBall N 150M USB adapter for internet connection with Windows XP. Let me explain about the present Windows connection :
I am using an Outdoor CPE Wimax. For mobility purpose I have connected this wimax to one LAN port of ADSL+ WiFi router ( Beetel 450 TC1 ). This ADSL+wifi router reset to Factosy settings and enabled DHCP. With this setting , I am perfectly able to connect my laptop to Internet.
When I connect my USB adapter to Ubuntu , intially it detected the signal and asked for credentials. I gave the same and network established. But I am not able to browse the net. If I give [URL]..., its going to the ADSL+Wifi's diagnosis page. With Windows , [URL]... was going to the Wimax modem. After 2-3 trial and error , now Ubuntu also not able to connect to the wifi network.
I'm using 11.2 with KDE.
I can connect to the Internet on my WLAN just fine (using Opera) and can dload torrent files (using the same).
However, I have had trouble accessing some community repositories in the past, cannot synchronise with an NTP server (annoying since my battery is low and time and date are reset most reboots) and cannot use the lyrics function or Wikipedia function in Amarok. Nor can I connect to the net using Firefox (though conqueror works just fine...) I cannot download torrents on KTorrent either.
It seems that there is some sort of 'permission'/connectivity issue.
I posted this on Launchpad under bug# 569445 and though I'm certain someone in our heroic development community will have a look at it eventually, maybe someone can help me here in the meantime, or at least provide some background info. Maybe a little reassurance that Ubuntu isn't broken for my Wifi is all I need.

I have a Samsung Jet S8000, which reports to have the following bluetooth services: Headset, Handsfree, Bluetooth stereo headset, Serial port, Dial-up, Basic printing, File Transfer, Object push, SIM access, Phonebook access. When I search for bluetooth devices and find my notebook (kubuntu 10.04, kbluetooth installed), my phone reports that this device (i.e. the notebook) has only the Object push bluetooth service. Whereas Windows (without installing any software) offers to use my mobile as a modem, to browse its content, to be a handsfree headset, etc...
From my phone I can send files to the notebook, but I need to make about 4 trials to succeed once - in the other 3 cases the file sending process stops on the phone with a 'Sending failed' message...What is the problem with this? Where should I debug? What software should I install to have full access to my phone? Is there an app to easily synchronize my phonebooks? bitpim and gnokii don't seem to support this phone.
I have a problem with mediatomb. I installed it from official ubuntu repo and when someone is trying to get some audio files via UPnP there are visible only namefiles istead of title from tags. It strange because MediaTomb provides album covers from tags, but no album, genre or title. How do I configure that ? MediaTomb from repo has taglib support but no id3lib.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI made a full install of Slackware and have been using one of my boxes as an Apache web server. I recently tried to install Joomla, the PHP CMS software, and when I ran the pre-install requisite checker (The second step of the installation), the installer notified me that I do not have MySQL support. I find this especially strange as I've made webpages using PHP that made use of MySQL databases.
My pre-post research has lead me to several other people with the same problem. Half were using windows, and just had not uncommented the "extension mysql.so" line in the php.ini file. The other half solved their problem by installing their distro's php-mysql module. According to what I'd read, you can still use MySQL if you don't have that module installed, but Joomla does need it to be able to use the MySQL database.
I've searched long and hard for this plugin/add-on/module for Slackware, but to no avail. It's available in RPM format, and I know that it's possible to use rpm2tgz to convert these files, but I don't know exactly what the issue is, and if Slackware may be different. I don't want to install that and then find out that it overwrote something that I'd needed.
I'm looking for a usb dongle which allows an extended wifi range (usually looks like a usb stick with a small antenna on top). Buffalo and Planex have both replied they don't support linux. Alfa makes one but I cannot get it locally.

Fedora 15 seems to not have any simplistic solutions. I am confused by rebuidling the kernel and would like a simpler solution if possible.

Wife's laptop has AR5001 Wireless Adapter laptop model is Toshiba Satellite A215
Problem : Wireless networking randomly loses connectivity and can not regain connectivity, the only apparent solution is a full power down , this is not even certain to work. The card works under Windows, she hates Windows. (I love her for this) I know it's not faulty hardware , because it will work for days on end under Windows without problems.
Things I've tried : madwifi drivers (any and all versions available) : These increase stability of the signal and seem to delay the inevitable however it still happens. When using these drivers the only option is to unload them modprobe -r then reboot then remove them again and re add them. It makes no sense why this works, and if I don't remove them prior to rebooting it will not work.
ATH5K drivers : These are pretty much junk, results are unpredictable at best, sometimes it will work perfectly for a few hours, sometimes it will not work at all. Nothing is repeatable, I can't seem to force whatever condition is causing this. rfkill does not show the wifi being blocked (hard or soft), unblocking it anyway does nothing, only way to make this work and it's iffy is to fully power down wait 5-10 minutes turn it back on and it MAY decide to work.
Firmware update : Updated the Toshiba BIOS to the latest version of the firmware 2.0 no joy here either. Same issue both sets of drivers.
Tried different distros and kernels : I've tried Mint 9, 10 ,11 ; Ubuntu 10.10, 10.04 , 9.10 and 11.04 (which is currently installed) , Fedora and OpenSUSE. All are giving the same problems. I have also tried a slew of different kernels no joy from any of them (I'm not at the computer with the issue now I will post exactly what kernel versions I've used when I have access to the machine).
Another useful bit of information, the hard switch to disable/enable wifi WILL disable it but turning it back on does absolutely nothing. The hotkey does nothing at all. The bios does not have an option to disable or enable the wireless card.
I will also post the typical lsmod , lspci , iwconfig all that good stuff when I get back to the computer in question. I'm probably just going to buy a PC card for it and give up on that one, but this is driving me insane and I would really like to see it resolved even if I do replace the hardware.
I have a HP laptop which can support 1600x900. But after I install ubuntu 9.10 on it, it can only support up to 1280x700. My laptop has a Nvidia graphics card. And i am using GNOME as my desktop environment.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had configured openvpn (2.0.9) on my Centos 5.4 machine.I want to route all client traffic through my gateway.So i had enabled (push "redirect-gateway ") in server configuration.Now the problem is the upload speed is very low while connecting through vpn.Normally i got 700 kbps download and 650 kbps upload speed.But while connecting through Vpn the upload speed is only 110-130 kbps but download is almost stable.Here is my Server and client conf Files.

I was using Compaq nx6310 Laptop with Centos 5.2 for some time and I ran into no problems. However every software installed on my Laptop incredibly slowed down after update to 5.3, It took me 8 mins to open firefox, log into and post to this forum. I don't know if related but I have strange values in system monitor, and the cpu usage is 60% to 80% most of the time even if there is no software running in the foreground.

I have disabled IPV6, cleared all caches and cookies but am not seeing any great difference. Last week I installed Knoppix 6.4.4 to have a look at it, and was amazed at the speed of the net -- one major difference was a 10 Mb pdf I was trying to download. In maverick using Firefox the download failed 10 times at between 1.2 and 1.4 megs. In Knoppix it completed first time in about 4 minutes. I have compared page loading speed and pages load on average 6-8 times faster than in Ubuntu. I have not altered any other settings.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHybrid Storage harddisks use a large non-volatile cache to save power and improve speed. I wanted to ask if there's a reasonably simple way to simulate that under Linux. Ideally there would be a FUSE-filesystem that does this, For now this is purely theoretical, but my setup would be a small home server (Sheeva Plug) with an external USB harddisk that goes to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity. To keep it powered down as long as possible, I would like to use a 16GB SD card as a cache for the harddisk, thus simulating Hybrid Storage.
The only possible solutions I found thus far were Hierarchical storage management packages for enterprise use, which are way too expensive for this task.
Has anyone else noticed that Firefox started running incredibly slowly?It just happened on two of my computers (one 9.10, the other 8.04 LTS).After starting firefox, it just sits and sits while trying to load a page. Even a local page (my router's config page). It literally takes about 5 minutes to load URL...Other internet apps are working fine, including Opera, which is how I'm writing this.

I just created a system in vBox with an AMD x4 925 2.8Ghz Quadcore Processor (with AMD Virtualization on). I gave the system 3 cores, 3GB of RAM, 128mb video memory, turned off all acceleration and gave it a 60GB virtual drive.
Following installation I have noticed the vbox is unusable. I click on the start menu for example and it takes 3-4 seconds to show up. Furthermore, just moving the mouse shows a frame rate at, what I would guess, around 5 frames/sec.
This is strange as I have given this machine very good specs.
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 510m with onboard Intel 855 sound (STAC 9750 AC97). The sound was perfect with WinXP, but with Ubuntu it's tinny and lacks richness and vibrates and distorts at higher volumes. I've played around with Alsamixer and changed the driver from ALSA to OSS4 and it has improved slightly, but still not perfect. Is it just not gonna get any better, should I not be expecting it to be as good as WinXP?
I've seen on the Intel site a Linux driver for my controller, it's a tarball but it won't compile after extracting it (read on this forum that someone had the exact same problem with that driver). Will the Intel driver not help, does the problem go deeper than just the driver? It would be perfect it you could just wrap the Dell/Intel driver and use that (just like with wireless ndiswrapper).
Is anyone else seeing high CPU usage with this new kernel while using Firefox 4? I didn't have this problem before this update. If I boot into the previous kernel there is no problem surfing the web with Firefox 4
This kernel update has made browsing the web very slow and scrolling the browser window incredibly slow to the point of frustration.
Should this be reported as a bug or an issue with the new kernel or has anyone already reported this issue?

I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2 with all the released updates are installed. I've got an Windows Xp SP3 on the same hard drive and it's works fine. S.M.A.R.T. says the hdd is 100%. A few days ago I realized that the boot time increased and the hard drive operations takes way too much time. So currently the boot sequence takes 11-14 minutes.
I've already tried to solve this problem but no effect:
1.) cleaned up the root directory to create more free space
2.) plugged the sata cable to another port
3.) changed from AHCI to IDE and reverse in BIOS settings
4.) added ahci, sata_nv into the /etc/sysconfig/kernel file and created a new initrd
5.) searched for problems in the syslog
Just to imagine how slow is currently the system/hdd:
So i am very new to linux based OS. Just started getting used to the terminal. but my problem is i am trying to install a game on steam and it is downloading very slow. i am used to getting close to 700 kb/s on windows 7 but on ubuntu 11.04 i am only getting 170-180 max. now i have searched all over and tried to fix it on my own but i just cant figure it out and am getting very frustrated. so if anybody has an idea as to how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated. (have looked through the forum by the way but as i said im new to linux and im not actually sure if im looking at the right things) but im using a wired connection. it says im connected to something called auto etho. and there is something called a loopback connection or something like that.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using Debian sid 4.1.3-1 and when i shutdown the system it takes 3 - 5 minutes before actually shutdown, there is only a black screen until the hdd led start flashing and after that the system finally shutdown. The weird part is that sometimes it happen in less than 30 seconds , how can i figure out where the problem is ?
