General :: Poor Quality Sound - Vibrates And Distorts At High Volume

May 11, 2010

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 510m with onboard Intel 855 sound (STAC 9750 AC97). The sound was perfect with WinXP, but with Ubuntu it's tinny and lacks richness and vibrates and distorts at higher volumes. I've played around with Alsamixer and changed the driver from ALSA to OSS4 and it has improved slightly, but still not perfect. Is it just not gonna get any better, should I not be expecting it to be as good as WinXP?

I've seen on the Intel site a Linux driver for my controller, it's a tarball but it won't compile after extracting it (read on this forum that someone had the exact same problem with that driver). Will the Intel driver not help, does the problem go deeper than just the driver? It would be perfect it you could just wrap the Dell/Intel driver and use that (just like with wireless ndiswrapper).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 5.1 Surround Sound Plays Very Poor Quality

Nov 8, 2010

I got a 5.1 desktop sound sys for my recently built gaming rig. It sounds great. On Windows, that is. In ubuntu when I'm playing music, primarily when the subwoofer plays the bass, the speakers sound like they're farting and ripping phone books in half. Also, they get very statticy and sort of quiet. In sound preferences, analog stereo duplex is selected, if that's of any value. How can I get good sound playback in ubuntu?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Play Anything - Music - Flash - Videos - Games - 'muffled' - Poor Sound Quality

Apr 7, 2010

I just got my hands on an MSI E7235-295US and slapped Ubuntu 9.10 on it. So far everything's worked great, but I am beginning to get a bit concerned about my sound quality. The laptop itself has 5 speakers + subwoofer so I should be getting 5.1 sound, if I understand things correctly (the newegg link should provide more details) and when I play anything (music, flash, videos, games, etc...) the sound comes out 'muffled'. Almost as if it is in a concert hall, maybe. I initially wondered if the problem is related to the 5 speakers and if the sound is initially only setup for two. If that is the case, nothing I've done has seemed to made any real difference. I've tried changing the master/pci channels, but it only hides it a little, and doesn't solve the problem.

This seemed to be on the right track, but the laptop is still really new and not listed in the alsa file.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Intel Motherboard H67MA-E35 (B3) - Sound Is Poor And The Volume Controls Just As Bad

Sep 11, 2011

Got this new motherboard and it's running 11.4 of Opensuse and it works great. Even got the DVI working with the monitor with help of instructions I found here. However the sound is poor and the volume controls just as bad. According to the motherboard docs it has THX Tru Studio sound pro, a Intel H67 (B3) chipset. Six audio ports. And the chipset integration by Realtek ALC837. I have tried to find this information in the sound setup with no luck. What was selected was the Intel model (no other specifics was found). According to the Alsamixer it says HDA Intel PCH and the card and chip is set as PulseAudio. What should the sound card be set to other than Intel?

Ubuntu :: Sound Glitch When Volume High?

Apr 25, 2011

I am using a Dell Inspiron Laptop 1464. I have Ubuntu 11.04 Installed, and every time I have the volume at MAX and especially when I'm listening to music that has like high bit-rate (342) or what ever, there is a glitch in the sound, it sounds like when a CD skips or when it is scratched. I tried installing all types of different mp3 encoders and still the same.

Also it is the same when I use Banshee or Rhythumbox.

Fedora :: Poor Quality LATEX Fonts?

May 18, 2010

I am currently working on a large document using LATEX and have bumped into a problem. Here is the thing: I write this document in several machines, there is a Mac at school, some Ubuntu based machine, and this Fedora 12 x64 laptop. The thing is that I compile the document periodically on these machines and I WOULD expect the results to be similar, but they are not because the resulting PDF is of inferior quality! (fonts do not look very well when they are zoomed in).

Mac OSX's latex-produced-PDFs are of higher quality than their Linux counterparts. Is there something I can do to fix that? Install an extra package perhaps?

Fedora :: Poor Picture Quality In Firefox And Other Browsers?

Jun 18, 2010

After taking a first look onto internet under Fedora linux (using Firefox web browser) I've saw that every single image is displayer much much worse than in same Firefox under Windows. Especially when scaling, it became pixelized, but even without scaling it is smoothen very much. I've checked Konqueror but quality is bad too and the same as in Firefox. What could be the reason and how could I fix it?

BTW, everything in linux GUI looks a little worse, including font, etc, looks smooth. Images under IrfanView too, but not as bad as in browsers. Proprietary Nvidia driver from RPMfusion is installed and 3D works. But running Fedora under VirtualBox in Windows produce same bad quality as in native Fedora.

Slackware :: Poor Quality Fonts In OpenOffice Menus

Mar 23, 2011

I'm running -current (13.37) 32 bit and have installed OpenOffice 3.2.1. The problem is the menu fonts in OpenOffice which look very thin and are not smooth. All other application fonts look very good. When I had this same version of OpenOffice installed on Slackware 12.2 I did not see this problem. In OpenOffice I have ticked the option to use system font for user interface but this doesn't seem to have any effect. I've also ticked the screen font anti aliasing option because the fonts look worse when this is not ticked. My KDE system font is DejaVu Sans, the same as it was on Slackware 12.2.

My OpenOffice package was built using a script written by Robby Workman which I think I got from his web site a long time ago. It takes the rpms and creates a Slackware package.

Software :: ImageMagick's Convert Utility And High Quality Output?

Jun 22, 2011

I am trying to split a PDF into component pages that are of equal quality to the original. If I use display mypdf.pdf, then the PDF is split into pages of acceptable quality. The problem here is that I have to save each page individually. If, however, I use convert mypdf.pdf mypdf.bmp, I get the individual pages of the PDF in .BMP format (which is fine, but not exactly what I want), but the quality is substantially less than the original. I've tried dozens of combinations of commands to try to increase this quality, but to no avail.

Even if I do convert mypdf.pdf mypdfagain.pdf, there is a big loss of quality. Anyone familiar with splitting a PDF into individual pages without suffering a loss in quality?
Ideally, I would just save all the "scenes/frames" from display, but that feature unfortunately does not exist (though I may endeavor myself to add it if no formal solution exists).

NOTE: I think part of my problem might be: by using identify mypdf.pdf I can see that the resolution is specified, and when I convert it the resolution is much lower. This could be a source of quality loss, but I'm not familiar enough with image conversion to say that for sure. Whatever this command does, it removes the extra layer or whatever it is that prevents OCR from succeeding. I'd really like to understand that technology.. What is it about a PDF that allows an individual to embed some meta-data into every page of the PDF so that the only thing seen, say, through OCR, or a text search function, is the embedded text?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Distorts In Ubuntu 10.04 With External Audio Interface ?

Nov 1, 2010

I have an external audio interface that is supported by alsa and works really well with ubuntu 10.04. The only problem is that on my studio monitors I can clearly hear that the sound from ubuntu is distorted, like there is too much gain somwhere. Since my audio interface (Lexicon Omega) has an output level knob on the interface, ALSA does not have a level slider (software) through any mixer (eg GNOME ALSA mixer).

In order to stop the distorting sound problem, ie the signal input to my external audio interface is too "hot" first install PulseAudio Volume Control (referred to as pavucontrol in repos) in PulseAudio Volume Control configuration tab, set "profile" of your external sound interface to "off" log out, and when you log in again your problem should be solved.

General :: Sound Lacking High And Low End

Is this just a standard characteristic of Linux or is there some way I can EQ all the audio? I've had nothing but problems with audio sounding like a scratched record in Linux. It would skip, crackle and break up no matter the source or volume. Found a solution that one to simply remove PulseAudio.

I'm using Altec Lansing ADA885 speakers with 8" DVC subwoofer. System response is good down to ~28Hz but it sounds like a cheap boombox. Last time I had these hooked up to a Windows (XP Pro) system, the bass was deep and full. Very audible all the way down. Now it sounds like the audio is boosted at center frequencies and overly cut on high and low end.I even tried putting in a PCI Turtle Beach Santa Cruz 5.1 card and the sound did NOT improve.
