I have a HP laptop which can support 1600x900. But after I install ubuntu 9.10 on it, it can only support up to 1280x700. My laptop has a Nvidia graphics card. And i am using GNOME as my desktop environment.
View 1 RepliesI have been on Ubuntu for a total of about 1 hour now, as I have finally made the switch from Windows. So far so good, but I do have some learning to do. First off, when I got Ubuntu 10.04 installed, everything worked great! Video lagged a little however. No biggy. The next time I booted up, it asked if I wanted to install video card drivers. I thought this is why my video was lagging, so I said yes. It then automatically installed my nvidia card drivers.
Then when I rebooted, I was greeted with a 640x480 screen resolution. When I go to System->Preferences->Monitors, I am given a warning that says: "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics drivers vendor's tool instead?"
Regardless if I hit "yes" or "no" I am brought to windows that should allow me to change resolutions. However, the only resolutions I can choose are 640x480 and 320x240. I know my "monitor" can support higher resolutions as I was running it at higher resolutions before the switch to Ubuntu. (I put monitor in quotes, as I am using a large rear projection T.V. as my monitor). How I can get a higher resolution?
I have an AMD Radeon HD 6950 and I know that no driver will be released for a while that works (current one causes xorg to crash and creates a reboot loop). Until then I have a 1920x1080 monitor running at 1280x1024 bc there are no higher settings.Is there any way to increase the resolution until the driver support comes? I tried a method involving xandr but that didnt work.

We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

The system is not showing correct resolution in the grub menu and the splash screen is black, until I reach the logon screen.Screen resolution, and video rendering after booting is picture-perfect.I presume this is a bug of the sort "VBE does not support 1920x1080 wide screen resolution".Or, maybe I am missing some point.I hope there must be some workaround.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed the latest Debian on an Atom 525 rig, with GMA 3150 integrated graphics. I have a 16:9 full HD monitor connected to the rig, but the available resolutions are not 16:9, except for the first and (roughly) the last:
1920x1080, 1680x1050, 1280x1024, 1152x864, 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480, 720x400
Now, 1920x1080 is the monitor's native resolution, but I really can't use it, stuff is just too small and not everything can be fixed by changing the system fonts' size. So I was wondering if there is a way to add some 16:9 resolutions, I'd look for 1600x900 and most of all 1280x720.I know that this usually gets done editing xorg.conf, but there's no such file in the /etc/X11 folder on my rig.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to dual-boot Windows 7 and Debian 6 upon its release on my sister's laptop. I want to share a partition between the two of them so that /home points to this directory and the Windows equivalent also points to it (C:Users).
Anyway, I've heard good and bad things about the NTFSMount driver (I think it's NTFS-3G now) and the NTFSprogs project and so I am not so certain what I should believe. I do know that NTFS has relatively high overhead, though I do not recall the source of this assertion, so I am considering the use of EXFAT. An open source EXFAT project is hosted on Google Code at [url] and it utilizes the kernel module FUSE.
I'm quite certain that I've got everything covered on the Windows side -- that is, I know that both NTFS and EXFAT will be suitable filesystems for my required usage.
My issue is that I'm curious which will have superior performance and stability in Debian. I planned on building the package from source and mounting the device in my FSTAB but I have also found a PPA for Ubuntu on Launchpad at [url] that I could borrow the debian/rules from and make a .deb package from.
What do you guys think? Should I go at it with the EXFAT or NTFS partitioning? Is NTFS-3G actually fairly supported at this point? Or perhaps should I consider some alternate method?
I have also considered that the only files she will be sharing are those of music, videos, and pictures so it could be better to just link /home/xxxx/Pictures (Music and Videos, too) to the new partition instead of all of /home.
I would like to know if it is possibile to have support for wi-fi midi support in linux.

I am new to opensuse and have installed 11.2 KDE. It is simply perfect for my system. However after the initial setup the display resolution was set perfectly fine for my 18.5" LED monitor, default resolution was 1366x768, and everything looked good from desktop to fonts but the OSS drivers didn't support compositing so I decided to switch to nvidia drivers. I installed the driver as shown in openSUSE repositories page, for my 6600GT card. Now after rebooting everything is stretched,even the fonts look really ugly and fuzzy.
I am unable to find any mode in Nvidia XServer settings that would correct the current ugly stretched display. I am unable to set 1366x768 manually as well, doing so my PC won't boot to KDM but rather sticks to console. Now it's for sure that my monitor and display card supports 1366x768 resolution but it's just that nvidia drivers/Nvidia XServer settings won't let me set that resolution. How can I set the resolution or even better if I can enable compositing using OSS drivers then that would be great an dm willing to switch back.
do you have any suggestions how I can install Ubuntu netbook edition on an old Laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook 2131) currently running Windows 2000 with all servicepacks (if I recall correctly it is SP5) without boot-support for USB-Stick/Media, CD-ROM, PXE/netboot; booting is only supported from builtin harddisk and from floppy-disk drive, which is definitely broken. (with working floppy disk drive all would be fine). I also installed WUBI, but the harddisk is only 4 GB, so I had to use the USB-Stick as the Ubuntu install partition and this is not supported by the Laptop as it cannot boot from it.
Has anybody an idea, is it viable to online-resize an NTFS-partition to create a small linux-partition for bootstrapping the install?? I do not want to, it's still useful, so when crashing the NTFS-filesystem is likely I prefer not to take this route and leave the laptop with Win2k installed.
First off, let me say: I'm a long time Linux hobbyist and recently installed Fedora 12. I've been looking (some say "lurking") around these forums for a bit after I loaded it up and let me say: Leigh, You're an amazing young man! Keep up the great work! I've a question: I've just put together a hobby computer: Pentuim 4, with 1 Gig of RAM and a Nvidia Geforce5700LE. When I install Fedora from a fresh install, everything works great: nice screen resolution, good graphics, etc. but no 3d or acceleration, so I'm very limited on my programs.
So I decided I need to upgrade my Nvidia driver. I followed Leigh's Nvidia setup guide after installing Fedora 12 (all four steps!) everything seemed to go fine, but when I reboot, I quickly see the Nvidia splash screen, but the screen then goes blank. Well, not really blank, I can see what appears to be a kind of cross-hatch pattern, plus I can see what should be my mouse cursor on screen (it also is a square shaped pattern). I suspect it may be at a screen resolution that my monitor doesn't support. Once there, the computer pretty much doesn't do anything else. Usually I can break into the x driver loading and go to the command prompt, but this latest time I can't even do that.
I'd like a distribution with KDE.
I've tried Kubuntu, but I don't get any higher screen resolution than 640*480. The graphics adapter that seems to get me in trouble is an Intel based one.
I'm open to other OS'es that uses KDE -I just need to be able to use Kdenlive.
I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 as a virtual machine under my Win7 windows. Everything is OK except that I can not get resolution higher than 800*600. Actually there are two options in Display Settings Menu 800*600 and 640*480. But my laptop has 15.4 inch monitor so its normal resolution is 1280*800.

Both browsers can be started and showed websites normaly. But no javascript, even simple tests like [URL] failed. I started elink with ./elink and typed then the url.

I'd prefer a machine with a higher res, but I've heard that Ubuntu will only go as high as 1024x768.I'm guessing, however, that by 9.1, it should recog the higher res while loading and it won't be a problem, but thought I'd check before shelling out on a machine with a nicer display.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThis is my first posting as a Linux Newbie. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 inside of a MS Virtual PC on my Vista machine. Everything seems to work beautifully and is stable. However, I would like to use a resolution higher than the current maximum of 800x600. I've poked around on the web and have tried various tips. I tried using the xrandr options which added a higher resolution mode, but when I would try to set the output to that resolution, I would get an error message to the effect that I could not exceed the current maximum of 800x600.
I tried to cobble parameter values together and create an xorg.conf file, but every iteration seems to produce a bunch of colorful vertical bars within my Virtual PC window, and I would have to blow away that virtual PC setup and rebuild it (along with reinstalling Ubuntu). As I said, 800x600 is not a show stopper, but I would like to take advantage of the real estate I have with my display. These "fifty-five year old" eyes could benefit from the larger size. FYI, I did take a stab at installing Virtual Box, but got the infamous "blue screen", so I would rather stick with what appears to be a stable virtual PC base.
I am installing Ubuntu Server 10.10 on and old Dell Laptop. The network connection is an Xircom PCMCIA card.During install, the computer sees and interacts via the network just fine. For example, I can ping the gateway. Also, the command "lspcmcia" works and show the Xircom card.When I reboot, however, there is no network access, and the "lspcmcia" command is not there. When I try "lspcmcia" the OS helpfully tells me that I can "apt-get" pcmciautils, but, without network access, that fails.I tried adding the install cdrom to apt using "apt-cdrom" and then tried to "apt-get" pcmciautils and it got further, installing some dependencies, but acted like it still was unable to locate the pcmciautils package.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Ubuntu can not go any higher then 640x480. I have found out what the problem is. The monitor has broken down (firmware or some thing) but still works fine in Windows. How do i know this ? Well a few mouths ago i was on Windows Me and one day it booted up saying that it is installing a default driver for the screen , so i let it do and after it did that it would never use the VA702 driver. Also the resolution could get higher then 1280x1024(this is the screens biggest res). A other mouth later i installed Windows XP and when using it i tried to install the VA702 driver but it did not work so i had to manually install it which worked but did not get correct resolutions e.g. could go higher than the monitor is meant to go. Now in Ubuntu can't go higher then 640x480. How can i fix this ?

I'm trying to make get a higher resolution when I use Ctrl+Alt+F2, I've looked up in other forums but apparently 9.10 changed its methods to fixing your desired resolution. I've tried other ways of changing it but I get an error when I boot in to the system, I have Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, a GeForce 8800m GTS, the highest my screen can go is 1440x900.
