CentOS 5 :: Incredibly Slowed Down After 5.3 Update ?

I was using Compaq nx6310 Laptop with Centos 5.2 for some time and I ran into no problems. However every software installed on my Laptop incredibly slowed down after update to 5.3, It took me 8 mins to open firefox, log into and post to this forum. I don't know if related but I have strange values in system monitor, and the cpu usage is 60% to 80% most of the time even if there is no software running in the foreground.

Everything seems to be fine and everything boots up in fedora 11 still; However, the recent updates to my system really hangs my boot time up and it takes a while for it to boot strangely... don't know what exactly could be going on really, but it's doing this for the current and previous kernel of F11. I upgraded several months ago from 8.04 to 9.10 and found my system slowed considerably.I thought I'd get used to it, but it just seems to really drag. I'd like some suggestions on how to downgrade or alternatively speed up the system (are there items I can "turn off" that can bring back the speediness of 8.04?).I'm considering wiping and re-installing, but getting my system back the way I want it is keeping me from doing that.

I have been noticing recently that my net speed has been getting slower and slower. I have disabled IPV6, cleared all caches and cookies but am not seeing any great difference. Last week I installed Knoppix 6.4.4 to have a look at it, and was amazed at the speed of the net -- one major difference was a 10 Mb pdf I was trying to download. In maverick using Firefox the download failed 10 times at between 1.2 and 1.4 megs. In Knoppix it completed first time in about 4 minutes. I have compared page loading speed and pages load on average 6-8 times faster than in Ubuntu. I have not altered any other settings.

I am trying to install F11 on an IBM Netvista 8307. Everything works fine until I set the root password. When I click next, the installation just hangs. The DVD checks out as not having any errors. Not sure what to do. The installation was not locking up, it just took a long time to go to the next page.

Each time I boot my opensuse 11.2 system one of the very first things that happens is that the system seems to test how fast it can handle my HDD, an older EIDE drive with the wide ribbon cable. This takes about a minute, one test each 15 secs or so until it gets down to about 33 speed and then the boot proceeds as normal.
I guess this is just the normal testing by the more advanced sata procedures in the kernel (2.6.34). If I were only booting this machine once every 6 months it would not be an issue, but I do so at least once a day. Is there any way to indicate to the system the speed of the connection so that it does not have to do the test, or close the gap a bit so that it finds the answer more quickly?

While I have Transmission running, whether it be up/downloading or just open with one thing unpaused and no activity, all other computer functions that need internet access are unusable. Transmission says my port is closed in its preferences.
1. How do I find and open port?
2. Will finding an open port solve the problem of all things internet not working while Transmission is?
3. Do I need to create a static ip in order to forward a port through my router?
4. Will creating a static ip and forwarding that port solve my problem of only being able to use the internet while Transmission is on?

I am a newbie to Linux, and so just installed Ubuntu.. for the first week all was fantastic, but now, everything has slowed down. It seems to run fine for a few minutes and then everything slows down. I try and drag a window or open a menu, type, anything, and it takes forever! Also the internet seems to stop working on a regular basis. I have checked processes to see if there was anything happening and one of the processors was sitting at 100%, but no actual processes in the list seemed to be using any processing power at all!

Has anyone else who uses Miro noticed a very noticeable sluggishness to it lately? It's been a bit since I've used it, but opened it up today, and it's just performing at a crawl, not to mention sucking up a goodly amount of CPU cycles (process "miro.real"). I've tried the Repo version 3.5.x as well as the PPA version 4.0.3, both are just as slow and as choppy as it can be in 11.04. Any thoughts, or anyone just want to share my misery? It loves company...

Has anyone else noticed that Firefox started running incredibly slowly?It just happened on two of my computers (one 9.10, the other 8.04 LTS).After starting firefox, it just sits and sits while trying to load a page. Even a local page (my router's config page). It literally takes about 5 minutes to load URL...Other internet apps are working fine, including Opera, which is how I'm writing this.

Has anyone had any issues when they freshly install Windows XP in VirtualBox?
I just created a system in vBox with an AMD x4 925 2.8Ghz Quadcore Processor (with AMD Virtualization on). I gave the system 3 cores, 3GB of RAM, 128mb video memory, turned off all acceleration and gave it a 60GB virtual drive.
Following installation I have noticed the vbox is unusable. I click on the start menu for example and it takes 3-4 seconds to show up. Furthermore, just moving the mouse shows a frame rate at, what I would guess, around 5 frames/sec.
This is strange as I have given this machine very good specs.

Is anyone else seeing high CPU usage with this new kernel while using Firefox 4? I didn't have this problem before this update. If I boot into the previous kernel there is no problem surfing the web with Firefox 4
This kernel update has made browsing the web very slow and scrolling the browser window incredibly slow to the point of frustration.
Should this be reported as a bug or an issue with the new kernel or has anyone already reported this issue?

My hardware:
AMD Athlon X2 4800+ (2,5 GHz) + 2 GB DDR2 memory
MSI K9N V2 (nforce 520)
SAMSUNG HD250HJ (SATA, 250 GB)
I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2 with all the released updates are installed. I've got an Windows Xp SP3 on the same hard drive and it's works fine. S.M.A.R.T. says the hdd is 100%. A few days ago I realized that the boot time increased and the hard drive operations takes way too much time. So currently the boot sequence takes 11-14 minutes.
I've already tried to solve this problem but no effect:
1.) cleaned up the root directory to create more free space
2.) plugged the sata cable to another port
3.) changed from AHCI to IDE and reverse in BIOS settings
4.) added ahci, sata_nv into the /etc/sysconfig/kernel file and created a new initrd
5.) searched for problems in the syslog

So i am very new to linux based OS. Just started getting used to the terminal. but my problem is i am trying to install a game on steam and it is downloading very slow. i am used to getting close to 700 kb/s on windows 7 but on ubuntu 11.04 i am only getting 170-180 max. now i have searched all over and tried to fix it on my own but i just cant figure it out and am getting very frustrated. so if anybody has an idea as to how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated. (have looked through the forum by the way but as i said im new to linux and im not actually sure if im looking at the right things) but im using a wired connection. it says im connected to something called auto etho. and there is something called a loopback connection or something like that.

I am using Debian sid 4.1.3-1 and when i shutdown the system it takes 3 - 5 minutes before actually shutdown, there is only a black screen until the hdd led start flashing and after that the system finally shutdown. The weird part is that sometimes it happen in less than 30 seconds , how can i figure out where the problem is ?

I have just installed 11.04 desktop edition on a freshly built machine with a 3GHz processor and 8GB ram. It has 8GB swap space and a 250GB partition which runs along side a 750GB Windows partition. The problem is it is running incredibly slowly. The interface freezes up every few minutes and stuff takes ages to load. I have run Ubuntu on computers with less than a 1GHz processor before and it has been fine. Should I just reinstall?

I have XFCE and xorg-server-1.7.7 in slackware64-13.0. I have my keyboard set up in xorg.conf. X ignores that and takes info from hal. So I have a US keyboard, when I have a UK/IE keyboard actually. When I added openoffice, i found I was getting double letters am getting double letters all over the place, and the cursor blink has slowed too near zero. So when I want to remove them again, the mouse will not land the cursor in the middle of a word to delete the extras. An average of 3 double letters are happening each line. Mouse sometimes works to remove them, usually not. I have set 'repeat delay' at maximum, 'repeat speed' & 'blink delay' at minimum. No effect. Disabled key repeat - still happens.

Since "upgrading" (ha!) to lucid I have had a number of problems that I am working my way through. The latest is accessing samba shares from a Win7 PC. It takes minutes to open the requested share from the Windows 7 PC. File transfers, once the directory is accessed, can be measured in bytes. It is an absolute trickle.
AFAIK the smb.conf is unchanged and, in any case, there is no problem accessing the shares from another linux PC.

On two Centos5 servers, yum gives a segmentation fault error when trying 'yum update' or 'yum check-update' after running 'yum clean' :

The error is the same for the other computer except while attempting to update the rpmforge repository. Nothing has really changed on the servers in some time and 'yum update' worked fine on each yesterday and I have no idea why they would both suddenly fail!

For some reason, when I do a yum check-update I get a list of no changed packages to install. If I follow this immediately with a yum update then it tries to install drbd83. I've tried a yum clean all and repeated the commands and get the same thing. This happens on both the machines that are set up to use DRBD. Just seems weird and I don't understand. Anyone got an explanation?

Just checking to be sure. 5.3>5.4 update went without a hitch:) But a message ran about (/etc/yum.repo.d) CentOS-Base.repo.rpmnew. Comparing CentOS-Base.repo with the new one show the 1st has the correct priorities and .rpmnew does not have the correct priorities. Should I remove the *.rpmnew repo after making sure it otherwise is the same as the original CentOS-Base.repo?

I am an old days RH release user(from 6.x) and just switching back from Debian/Ubuntu to CentOS on some servers, but I can not understand the kernel update strategy currently enabled in CentOS.There are two boxes, with almost identical installation, but recently there was an auto update of kernel on one box. This auto update also seems to issue an auto reboot on the machine, which is unacceptable on server machines.

After some testing for a couple of days, I decided to take the plunge and update all my 5.3 machines. Using the recipe from the release notes:
yum clean all
yum update glibc*
yum update yum* rpm* python*
yum clean all
yum update
shutdown -r now
I updated some guinea pigs that I had physical access to and didn't have any issues. So I remotely updated a small farm of LAMP machines that handle a couple of million page views per day. It took each machine approximately 5-6 minutes to download/install/reboot.

I have been a Linux user in the past for a good couple of years but I got back into gaming and left Linux for a while. Now after coming back to it, I have just installed Ubuntu 10.4 and all networking just seems incredibly slow.
I've browsed the internet as much as I can and found those Firefox pipelining tweaks all over the place; trying them makes no difference whatsoever so I decided to take a temporary solution and resort to OpenDNS but even this feels obviously too slow for the broadband I have.
Not only with loading web pages in Firefox, I have also tried downloading files from the internet and trying Google Chrome. But neither of these were right either.
I'm almost 90% sure it's not my BTHomeHub that's causing the problems because when using Windows, it works just fine and internet speeds are perfectly normal. The only OS I'm having this speed problem with is Ubuntu.
I'm unsure as to what evidence/help I can post, pings, IPv4/IPv6 information or WiFi configurations?
Just wondering though, this seems to be a big problem with Ubuntu 10.04 so has anyone had and solved this problem before and returned their internet speeds to what they should be?

I just ran a "yum update" on my CentOS 5.3 system. After a reboot, I noticed /etc/redhat-release show CentOS 5.4.
I thought yum upgrade was supposed to do that?
I wanted to simply patch my CentOS 5.3 system without turning it into CentOS 5.4 ... YET.
