Is there any Linux equivalent to Windows Live Writer? I've got the Wordpress for iPhone app on my iPod and Windows Live Writer on Windows. These programs are much easier for stuff such as adding images than the web interface. Is there a similar program for Linux that works with self-hosted Wordpress blogs?

Since I've been using Ubuntu I haven't run into any major screwups like with windows , but there are some times I've installed it and it took a while to get different things working. I don't want to have to go through the whole process again if there's ever a major malfunction.
Here at work we've made very good use of Server 2003's Shadow Copy service, which lets me restore users' files quickly and easily using the Previous Versions software--yet takes minimal resources and storage space on the server. I've also heard that the service may be available to users in Windows 7. Is there an equivalent of this in Ubuntu? Something I could set up that would snapshot files on my hard drive every so often, and let me recover deleted files or earlier versions of files?

I seem to remember installing LimeWire on Ubuntu a while back and the file I downloaded was self-installable. Is there a place where Ubuntu programs are available for download as packages that install themselves?Why are most programs for Linux not self-installable, like .exe installers in Windows? Is there a security advantage to most programs not being available for download a single automatic install file? It would be much easier for me to go to a program's website, download a single file that installs by itself, and be done with it.
Also, why is it that, unless you install a program in Ubuntu using synaptic package manager, the program cannot be uninstalled under GUI? I really love Ubuntu, but find that even having simple control over installing and uninstalling programs is a real pain. I would love to go to LibreOffice's website, download a single file for Ubuntu that would install the entire program, install it, and be done with it.
The only thing I miss about Windows is the US International keyboard setting. Is there really no equivalent in Ubuntu?
The current Ubuntu US International keyboard setting is just not the same. "whodoesitwant" explained the difference last year [URL], and it has been asked about before [URL]. Does anyone know if there are plans to implement a Windows-like keyboard setting?
This may seem petty, but it's a real nuisance if you've learned to touch type in Windows. At the moment the best I can find in Ubuntu is the US International (AltGr dead keys) layout, but it's awkward and slow using the right-hand alt key.
I have a logon script set in the startup folder "All Users > Startup > logon.bat" and it nicely mounts network drives from a Windows Server 2003 computer. The script is as follows:

Very simple. Now what I need to know:
- What is a batch equivalent and what commands will I need?
- Where is/how do I use the equivalent to Startup folder
- Can I get it to mount in the Computer folder or will it be mounted through root ("/") or can I have it easily accessible (maybe the Desktop)?
- Is there a way I can get the equivalent to the Windows password vault (remember passwords for certain addresses) and;
- If not, can I get the script to request Username and Password from the user for the mapping?
- Can I write to the folders if the user has permissions to write (had trouble with smbmount doing this)

View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to set up my USB memory stick(s) (4gb) so that I have a partition (3gb?) for personal data storage and another hidden (1gb?) for booting/installing Ubuntu live from the 'stick' on friends' and colleagues' computers.I have a number of queries:
1) If I flag the boot partition 'hidden' in Gparted, it does what I want in Ubuntu but not in Windows; in Windows you can see the hidden partition, 'Wubi', and not the storage one. Does it simply depend on the physical position of the partitions on the memory stick?
2) I am using Unetbootin and Gparted (both GUIs). Should I prepare the live boot partition before or after partitioning the memory stick?
3) How much memory should I allow for the live boot partition?
4) Is there anyone who has asked similar questions or tried to achieve the same results before? Please let me know if I'm doing it all wrong.
I have a friend of mines computer that is hosed and gets the BSOD. He has pictures of his grandson on there that her really needs before I fix it. Is there a way to mount the main windows partition while running the Live CD? I have tried it and get an error but I am not able to get it working. Does anyone else know any other tricks I can do to help get my friends pictures of his grandson off there?

From the knoppix cd i can find harddrive but when i try to access it im asked for a password. However dont know the password I have tried the password from his windows login but that doesnt work. Is there another way to access the drive so i dont have to use a password? If possible i would like to avoid removing the harddrive from the laptop. The installed OS is win7.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows laptop that isn't booting up anymore for some reason Safe Mode doesn't even work. Looking at what is printed out when it hangs, I did a search on google and it is some sort of HP laptop problem. Apparently the hard drive should still be OK, if only I can access it somehow. I was thinking maybe I could use one of those live Linux CDs to boot up. But I'm not too familiar with those. Would they be able to detect the laptop's DVD burner, and allow me to burn files off the NTFS partition to a blank DVD? I want to get my data off before I hand the laptop over to the IT department - who knows what they will do to it. So exactly which live Linux CD flavor should I use (my other working computer only has a CD burner)? And then would it be easy to burn a DVD after booting up the live Linux CD?

I have two DVDs .One is player that works okay, but the system does not recognize the other one ,which is MSI DVD writer. Those are both ATA connected on same line . I have tried to switch positions ..but the MSI writer is always hidden.
I can't see MSI on your hardware compatibility list. Is it not useable with Linux ?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Kubuntu 11.04 and LibreOffice Writer 3.3.2. I'm trying to print a #10 envelope on an HP LaserJet 5M printer. When I create the envelope and attempt to print it, LIbreOffice sets the paper size to #10 Envelope, as it should. I put the envelope into the manual feed tray and initiate the actual printing operation. The printer goes through the motions of processing the output -- and then goes back to the READY state without printing anything. I've tried using all possible Paper Tray settings and also using the CUPS drivers rather than the Foomatic drivers. None of that makes a difference. What does make a difference is setting the paper size to Letter, but then, of course, the information prints in the wrong place on the page.

Since the files are all created by gedit, in each case there is both file and file~. I want to get rid of all the 'file~' lines. I thought I could do search and replace using *~, but this doesn't work.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThey have pictures and documents everywhere so I figured I would just backup their entire HDD onto my external one and let them go in and transfer them back off. I keep proper backups so this isn't how I normally do things. I have done similar things in the past with dieing HDD's and Knoppix but I have never had this issue. I burned a CD using the latest ISO and Ubuntu seen both the main HDD and my external. I just copied all the contents of the main HDD over to the external. All went well and I could browse and view all the files from the external HDD after the transfer using the live CD. Unfortunately I am having an issue seeing the external HDD in Windows. As soon as I hook the drive up - windows says I need to Format it(Which I won't do obviously). But if I boot the live CD I can still see and use the files. How do can I get windows to see the drive and files without destroying data?
