View 8 RepliesIm trying to recover some data from my friends laptop, since it wont boot from the harddisk anymore. From the knoppix cd i can find harddrive but when i try to access it im asked for a password. However dont know the password I have tried the password from his windows login but that doesnt work. Is there another way to access the drive so i dont have to use a password? If possible i would like to avoid removing the harddrive from the laptop. The installed OS is win7.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI use Linux but have a computer with windows I use for gaming. It died and put the hard drive into another computer and used knoppix to recover my files. I looked at the ownership of the windows files and the owner is knoppix. Now I am concerned that ownership will not work on my new Windows computer (when I finish building it, that is). Since I don't get into Windows much I have no idea what those permissions should be.
If I copy them with owner knoppix can I even access them in Windows to change the ownership to whatever Windows will accept? If I change the ownership before putting them on a CD with knoppix, can I write the CD? I will have to use the hard drive on the new windows box so will not have access to the files later (unless I also copy them to my Linux computer for safekeeping). At least I know the ownership changes to make with Linux.
I am trying to rescue some files on a Dell Laptop running XP that is in a BSOD state. I can boot up Knoppix just fine but all the files are read only but get the error: The remount command failed. Maybe there is another process accessing the filesystem currently.Also when I look at the files and folders on the Knoppix CD they look really odd. See attachment

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am new to knoppix. I actually have never used it. I was under the impression that I could change or recover my password on Windows Vista. I only have one user and it is the administrator. I am not exactly sure why it is no longer working. It is on a laptop and I have let others use it at times. don't know if someone may have changed when it was open at work or something. Every time I boot up and my user account comes up. I put in my password and it looks like it will log on but then comes back and says wrong password. I did see a way to do it with Windows 2000, and XP. Will that also work with Vista?

We have G5 PPC with Mac OS 10.xx (panther?). I need files from it, but we don't have the passwords for the machine, and have no disks with which to recover data or reinstall the OS. So, I used an Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 disk and mounted the drives, but when I try and open the target dir, I get permission problems.

I have run into a bit of an obstacle -- there seems to be some permissions setting that are barring me from accessing the files I need to. I can see the Machintosh HD and can access some files. How do I change permissions for the entire drive and all it's directories?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI wanted to get the data off the WD2500 (250MB) hard drive so slaved it to an older Dell machine running Win 2k. Unfortunately, the older machine's BIOS is so old it can't read the larger hard drive. Then, I connected it to a Gateway machine running Win 2k; it started running chkdsk on the WD2500 drive and indicated it was 'fixing' a bunch of errors. It appeared to be in an endless loop, fixing the same problem over and over, so I killed the power. Then, I booted the Gateway machine with Knoppix Live CDIt shows the 250G hard drive in the file manager window. When I click on the 250G hard drive icon it shows at the bottom of the window '1 visible item (0 hidden), Free space: 97.4 GB (Total: 250.0 GB)This seems about rightHowever, the file listing only includes a single item, 'Documents and Settings' of size 4.1 kb. So something to do with the directory structure is corrupted, but I don't know what, and I don't know how to fix it
View 8 Replies View RelatedIt seems that by default a Windows share mounted at /mnt/Windows/ will be owned by root and have 755 permissions set on all files. I usually do a chown or chmod to allow my user to have write access to these files. Does that affect the Windows files in any way? It takes quite some time to complete the chown/chmod when there's a lot of data. Where is the Linux permission data kept for the Windows share? On the Linux computer where I set the permissions? I just want to get a better understanding how this works.

How do I set the permissions on the mount to allow certain users read/write access to the share? I am logged on the Linux server as the same user who authenticated the mount. The user can read write on the Windows server share, but not while loggged into the Linux server.

The link is there however, I can't even open the folder. How should I go about getting access. So that I'm able to copy files from other systems on the network.
Here is my fstab's content:

I am currently using the windows version of gVim to edit source files on a networked drive mapped to a linux system, as well as local files created in cygwin.
The problem is that the windows version of gVim destroys the original file permissions on the respective systems. IE: Files on cygwin are defaulted to 077. When edited by the windows version of vim they are saved as 777.This problem doesn't even occur when using ms-notepad (as well as all other editors I've tried), so I am not quite sure why gVim does it.
A possible solution would be to use cygwin's gVim for everything, but that's rather cumbersome as it requires running an x11 environment to support it, and it causes some problems when running some commands from within gVim (or vim for that matter) when working on the networked drive.
Any ideas how I might be able to maintain the existing file permissions?
This morning while on a different machine the problem with cygwin did not occur. Cygwin & gVim were the same version, however the other machine is running WinXP while the machine the problem is occurring on runs Win7.
I'm using Ubuntu 7.04 on a live boot right now so I can move from files from a hard drive on a computer that won't boot. This is my work computer, which contains about three years worth of accounting and inventory information that I absolutely must recover from the drive. The computer runs one SATA drive, and has no ports for additional drives. Otherwise I have two USB drives connected and an IDE connected through a USB adapter. (The SATA drive will not work through the adapter for some reason). I have absolutely no access to another computer with SATA support.
All the drives mount on 7.04, and I can view the files on the SATA drive - which leads me to believe the drive isn't completely dead. So i'm hoping to move the files I need over to one of the USB drives.
However, i'm getting flags when I move files. -Without- installing Linux, is there a way for me to grant myself permissions to move/copy/delete files on my hard drives? Otherwise, is there a simple way (that won't compromise the data on the drive) for me to re-do the partitions the SATA drive so I can install linux?
Have problem with HD too full so I have booted from a live CD hoping to copy my document and data files onto an external drive.
Have a problem with a couple directories on my HD. They have a X on them and when I try to copy them I get an error message that I do not have permission to read them. Same thing happens when I go to open the directory to see what files are in there.
I can get the permissions changed in live CD session so I can copy them to the external drive.
No luck doing it in a regular boot to my HD as it will not allow me in due to the HD being full. Even in terminal I can't access the directories in question because the seem not to exist but yet when I do a df command they show up.
P.S. This problem occurred after I updated to ver 10.4
I have broken my MBR and can now only enter 9.10 with the ubuntu start up cd.when i boot through he ubuntu live cd.I can see my mounted drive with all my files however i do not have the permissions to open or copy some of my files( music, films, pics) . id like to do this so i can transfer all my files to an external HDD and reformat start all over again.error when trying to open files.You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of.

I have a DVD with Linux program on and I been trying to install them but no success. (No .exe files here). It appears the program on the DVD comes in different formats ( different file extensions). Can someone tell me how to install programs on Knoppix 6.1
View 7 Replies View RelatedI thought I knew my way around a little, but apparently mounting is still a complete mystery to me. I'm trying to back up my data with Knoppix since Ubuntu won't start up. something weird is happening with the keyboard and it starts spamming ^[[26~ across the splash screen. When I try to read my hard drive, Knoppix tells me "mount: wrong fstype, bad option, bad superblock." It seems like it should be a pretty common error, but I haven't found any anything helpful and understandable that doesn't involve rebooting (won't get me anywhere with Knoppix). I think it has something to do with Knoppix insisting my drive is hda instead of sda, though I have read that Ubuntu likes to tell you hda is sda anyway. Knoppix is the only distro that has worked on a live boot so far.I've thought of trying dd, dd rescue, or just cp onto my external, but I don't know if Knoppix's hda business will make a working backup. The other computers around are all Windows with no extra space, so I don't know what the easiest and safest way is to test wether the back up worked.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI was trying to troubleshoot a problematic server. The server, which runs on CentOS 4.x, is attached to Hardware RAID / disk array. Since the OS partition is having issues, I plan to troubleshoot the server by booting up with Knoppix 6 in "knoppix 2" / text mode. Everything went fine except, I'm not able to see all volumes available on the disk array. Only the first volume is presented.
Based on this, I'm suspecting Knoppix 6 kernel is not supporting Multiple LUN by default, based on a few Google search. Tried kernel parameters such as "max_luns=128" and "max_scsi_luns=128" at boot prompt but no luck. how can I enable Multiple LUN support during boot time or right after boot time?
Is there any Linux equivalent to Windows Live Writer? I've got the Wordpress for iPhone app on my iPod and Windows Live Writer on Windows. These programs are much easier for stuff such as adding images than the web interface. Is there a similar program for Linux that works with self-hosted Wordpress blogs?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI own a Lacie Network Space (1) which has recently given up the ghost - I looked into getting data recovered from it and it turns out it would cost around 500quid!! After doing some research I've found out that the drive runs linux - SO, I have bought myself a HDD cradle, Downloaded an Ubuntu Live CD, taken the drive out of the network space and mounted it in Ubuntu via USB. All good up til now, I've managed to get the majority of my data off except one folder - my music folder. It has quite a deep file structure (which maybe the issue) but essentially the permissions for the top folder have a padlock and a small cross - this doesn't allow me to even read the files to copy them off. I've now tried the 'chown' command: sudo chown ubuntu /media/ 999GBfilessystem/ openshare/audio

I'm using robocopy to copy the files. But i have a small problem with sleep. Every 30mins or maybe an hour knoppix goes to sleep and my transfer stops. How do i change the time or disable it completely? so i dont have to tap a key every 30mins
