Ubuntu :: Have The Equivalent Of A Windows .exe Self-installable File?
Jun 14, 2011
Does Ubuntu have the equivalent of a Windows .exe self-installable file? If so, what is it called? I seem to remember installing LimeWire on Ubuntu a while back and the file I downloaded was self-installable. Is there a place where Ubuntu programs are available for download as packages that install themselves? Why are most programs for Linux not self-installable, like .exe installers in Windows? Is there a security advantage to most programs not being available for download a single automatic install file? It would be much easier for me to go to a program's website, download a single file that installs by itself, and be done with it.
Also, why is it that, unless you install a program in Ubuntu using synaptic package manager, the program cannot be uninstalled under GUI? I really love Ubuntu, but find that even having simple control over installing and uninstalling programs is a real pain. I would love to go to LibreOffice's website, download a single file for Ubuntu that would install the entire program, install it, and be done with it.

I have installed debian on my dell latitude d630 laptop and am currently making a derivative for others to use. however I can't get the wireless to work. I downloaded it from the broadcom site but it comes as a gzip file instead of a deb file. if I extract the gzip file I don't get any installable (deb) files. I need the wireless to work because now a bridged network from my windows laptop isn't working.

Does Ubuntu have an equivalent to system restore like windows?
I just want to know what the best way is to save everything , as in settings and programs etc. , just in case there's some sort of major failure.
Any ghosting programs that will allow me to save the last known good configuration? or clone the entire drive?
Since I've been using Ubuntu I haven't run into any major screwups like with windows , but there are some times I've installed it and it took a while to get different things working. I don't want to have to go through the whole process again if there's ever a major malfunction.

Here at work we've made very good use of Server 2003's Shadow Copy service, which lets me restore users' files quickly and easily using the Previous Versions software--yet takes minimal resources and storage space on the server. I've also heard that the service may be available to users in Windows 7. Is there an equivalent of this in Ubuntu? Something I could set up that would snapshot files on my hard drive every so often, and let me recover deleted files or earlier versions of files?

The only thing I miss about Windows is the US International keyboard setting. Is there really no equivalent in Ubuntu?
The current Ubuntu US International keyboard setting is just not the same. "whodoesitwant" explained the difference last year [URL], and it has been asked about before [URL]. Does anyone know if there are plans to implement a Windows-like keyboard setting?
This may seem petty, but it's a real nuisance if you've learned to touch type in Windows. At the moment the best I can find in Ubuntu is the US International (AltGr dead keys) layout, but it's awkward and slow using the right-hand alt key.

I have a logon script set in the startup folder "All Users > Startup > logon.bat" and it nicely mounts network drives from a Windows Server 2003 computer. The script is as follows:
<logon.txt (.bat) attachment>
Very simple. Now what I need to know:
- What is a batch equivalent and what commands will I need?
- Where is/how do I use the equivalent to Startup folder
- Can I get it to mount in the Computer folder or will it be mounted through root ("/") or can I have it easily accessible (maybe the Desktop)?
- Is there a way I can get the equivalent to the Windows password vault (remember passwords for certain addresses) and;
- If not, can I get the script to request Username and Password from the user for the mapping?
- Can I write to the folders if the user has permissions to write (had trouble with smbmount doing this)

Is there any Linux equivalent to Windows Live Writer? I've got the Wordpress for iPhone app on my iPod and Windows Live Writer on Windows. These programs are much easier for stuff such as adding images than the web interface. Is there a similar program for Linux that works with self-hosted Wordpress blogs?

I was attempting to install the package 'gnustep-devel', but the package 'gorm.app' which gnustep-devel depends on is not available. I've checked in Synaptic's Settings->Repositories and I have all repositories enabled, and the package is available via a Debian repository... I'm pretty sure that there's a better place to report it than here, but I don't know where that is.

When I installed Ubuntu server, I was shown a nice list of services I could add on if required. When I installed Ubuntu through the netboot network installer, I was shown a even bigger list. Now that I have the desktop, how do I see it again? Do they each have a name? I remember seeing LAMP server, DNS server, some cloud hosting services etc ..

I would like a new linux distro. I've been using ubuntu for like 2 years or more and I'm just done with it. Some things that I want out of the new distro are:
Since I like learning, I want the distro to NOT be so user-friendly. I want a challenge. Just anything new to learn would be amazing. I need wireless support out of the box though, since that's the only source of internet I have around here.. I need it to be installable from usb, since i'm using a netbook without a cd drive.

I am trying to install ubuntu on an old machine and no matter what version I try to install I get this same error.
"No installable Kernel was found in the defined APT sources"
The versions I have tried are (9.04server. 9.10desktop, 10.04 server).
I have swapped both the CD drive and HDD drive becuase, well i don't know why, but I have. This didn't work.
I have read [URL] and have tried changing my BIOS settings so that i have my config is:
IDE Primary Master : Maxtor 6Y080L0 (HDD)
IDE Primary Slave : HL-dt-st-sl8480b (CD-DRIVE)
This didn't work.
I have also tried doing the instructions posted by migraineman on the second page of the thread mentioned above but this also didn't work.
My specs are:
Cyrix 6x86 Processor
80Gb Maxtor HDD
LG-GCE CD-ROM Drive

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and WINE 1.2. WineHQ APPDB states that Rosetta Stone is not installable. I have installed it, so the information there is not correct/complete. When I installed, it ran perfectly. I created an ISO of the install disc and the first lesson. I then loop mounted each of them in turn for them to run and assigned each of them a windows directory, configuring them as CD-ROM. This worked perfectly the first day. Now it no longer works with the ISO or with the original disc. I have run the program in terminal and received the following output:
Quote:
err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {96749377-3391-11d2-9ee3-00c04f797396} not registered
err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {96749377-3391-11d2-9ee3-00c04f797396} not registered

err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {96749377-3391-11d2-9ee3-00c04f797396} could be created for context 0x17
[Code].....
I have seen similar outputs on the forums, but nothing that included that AUDIO ERROR. This seems to be an issue of time. If I don't do anything, the program will crash giving me error 5118. If I run through lesson select and mic testing quickly then I can get all the way to the lesson before it crashes with the same error.

I want to install Debian 8 (XFCE) on the other one.I have tried using Debian-8.0.0-Live-amd64-xfce, Debian-8.0.0-amd64-DVD and Debian-8.0.0-amd64-netinst, all from a USB key (prepared with Unetbootin), but after successfully partitionning SSD disk, the installer raises the following issue:"no install-able kernel was found in the defined apt sources".
