General :: Equivalent Of Gnu `sort -R` On OSX?
Sep 11, 2011
The GNU sort text utility features a non-standard -R option to randomize input lines (presumably by sorting on a hash).
OSX sort does not have this extension. Is there similar functionality available in another text filter?

Under unix/linux, there is this extremely useful program screen: it's for bash, text-only, and I can detach a session, log out (the session is still running though), log in later (even from a different computer) and resume the session exactly as I left it. My question is, is there an equivalent to screen for X? So what I want to do is: work remotely with ssh -X in an X-session on a remote linux machine, log out, then later log in from a different computer again with ssh -X and then re-attach the X-session; practically resuming work from the moment when I logged out before. Is this possible?

I need to tail -f a log file that is rotated.
This is the exact same issue as the one here, but on OS X:
Why does less tail mode stop working?
So how can I constantly track a file whose inode might change under OS X?

I want to create a bootable flash drive that will boot and install the slackware 13.0 distro, except that I need to be able to do it from a Windows system for a Linux install. Here's what the Linux version does(from a web page written by Eric Hameleers, who also wrote the script):
"This directory contains a script (create_multipartboot.sh) and several other files that will transform your USB stick into a bootable Slackware installer. The script creates an multi-partition image file (hence the script's filename), which you need to copy onto a USB stick.A (small) FAT partition contains the slackware setup program and the bootable code, while the rest of the available space will be used up by a 'ext2' formatted partition in which as much Slackware packages are stored as can fit."

I am running an older version of linux (RHEL 5 desktop) and I've been a bit spoiled by the mac desktop I had at my previous job. There are a few niceties I really miss, but the big one is the window management provided by SizeUp. The feature I'm looking for is a keyboard shortcut to resize and move windows to sides and corners of the screen. Is there such a tool for Linux?

Is there any Linux equivalent to Windows Live Writer? I've got the Wordpress for iPhone app on my iPod and Windows Live Writer on Windows. These programs are much easier for stuff such as adding images than the web interface. Is there a similar program for Linux that works with self-hosted Wordpress blogs?

Why isn't there a simple program like Microsoft Windows' Notepad? One which is format stupid (ASCII only), so I can over-ride hidden html character entities. The other day I found myself wasting hours trying to get the Xephyr to work by cutting and pasting the terminal instructions from the following website into a gnome-terminal session - but each time it would give me the same, small window. I tried copying the text from the browser (using copy and paste) to gedit, but gedit was not showing the hidden character entities from the html code. After all this lost time trying different resolution sizes, I became suspicious that something was interfering with my cutting and pasting between gedit and the CLI terminal. Sure enough when I compared the webpage source code it gave me the clue to the problem.
From the same page - two examples:
Hidden character (notice the '' or × )
$ Xephyr -ac -screen 1280786 -br -reset -terminate 2> /dev/null :2 &
NO hidden character (notice the 'x')
$ Xephyr -ac -screen 1280x1024 -br -reset -terminate 2> /dev/null :1 &
[code]....
I even tried cutting and pasting out of the terminal yet somehow it retained the hidden characters. I could not find any preference setting in any of these programs which would allow for either eliminating the hidden characters doing a cut and paste or at least revealing them. I would like to plead to programmers out there for this basic functionality...

We often require to find an equivalent text command for any GUI operation. Just as an example we click on a folder (say ABC) from the current directory in order to see the contents of that directory. The equivalent command for it to happen would be->
Code:
cd ABC ls Now the thing is that we often don't know what that equivalent command will be. So I want to know that is there any way out to find it. What I want to do is that I shall perform any operation using mouse in the GUI mode(whatever operation it could be) and then I can see a log file to see what I actually did last(rather what the command would have been if I have worked in the text mode)...

I am comiling some programs on Linux using gcc previously compiled using cc compiler on Solaris. Below are some of the confusions:
1. There is -xildoff option in cc which is giving error "language ildoff not recognized". xildoff in cc is for switching off the option of incremental editor ild. Is there anything equivalent on gcc?
2. There is runtime link option in cc as -R but gcc just says "unrecognised option". Does gcc only supports LD_RUN_PATH?
3. There is -Xa option to force cc to chose a particular flavor of c.Its for default c and K&R C. gcc has -std option but not sure which one is equivalent to -Xa in c. It seems -std=c90?
