General :: Change/erase Windows Password Using Ubuntu Live?

May 1, 2011

How can I change or erase windows XP password from Ubuntu Live (11.04) booted on the PC in question? I reckon it should be possible, at least it is possible to do so to another Ubuntu installation, but I never knew how to do it to XP.

Ubuntu Security :: Erase A Partition Without Entering A Password?

Jan 2, 2010

I've installed Karmic after having used Jaunty in the past and it's working great, but I have a couple of security questions...

I opened the Disc Utility (Palimpsest) under System>Administration and was amazed that it looks like it will let me delete partitions on my hard drive, and without even asking for a password. This seems like an enormous security oversight, what am I missing here? Is there a bug filed for this?

Also related, why does Ubuntu allow a user to disable startup applications without requiring a password?

Ubuntu :: Erase It And Reinstall Windows Xp

May 2, 2011

job installing windows XP and a partion ubuntu (?) on my desktop compooper. telling him i have no knowledge of ubuntu, he still isntalled it. I am giving this computer to my parents, and want to just put Windows XP on it. here is what a half *** job means, windows XP doesn't have the sound and ethernet driver. he couldn't find them to install them onto the computer...and i keep getting errors all over the place when i try and do things on ubuntu.

I downloaded Windows XP Professional 64bit Corporate yesterday and burned it to a CD. Restarted the computer so it will boot but it just keeps going to the screen asking which system I want to log in to. NOW HERE IS THE KICKER.... when i try to go onto the windows XP side, it is coming up with an error that says I need to activate windows. when i click yes, it says i have already activated. when i click on the user it repeats what i just stated. so now i can't even get into the windows xp side.

General :: Ssh Connection Forces Password Change Then Closes Connection - WARNING: Your Password Has Expired

Feb 16, 2011

On my linux machine, I've enforced a password expiry policy every 45 days. So, today when I tried to ssh to the host, I get the typical "WARNING: Your password has expired". Fine, no big deal. But when I enter my new password and confirm, instead of giving me a login prompt, it tells me passwd all auth tokens updated successfully, then next line, "Connection to <host> closed". I can re-ssh back into that host and all is well from here, but it's a nuisance having to go through the extra step. Is this something in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config somewhere or perhaps a PAM config issue?

Ubuntu :: Change Root Password - Typing A Password, No Characters Show Up?

Mar 9, 2010

I'm really new to Linux so this will probably sound like a pretty naive question to most users, but how do you change the root password? To install Java, I have to type # su into Terminal, which then asks for the password. What's weird is that when I start typing a password, no characters show up. I don't know if this is supposed to happen or not.I've found a bunch of different sites on the Internet that explain how to change the root password, but none of them seem to work for my specific work station.

I've got Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. In the GRUB boot menu, I can choose to boot normal or in recovery mode (I'm led to believe older versions don't have this option).I've tried typing # sudo passwrd into Terminal, but I already have a root password set up apparently, so I can't change it there.
