General :: Any Equivalent To Windows Live Writer?
Jan 14, 2010Is there any Linux equivalent to Windows Live Writer? I've got the Wordpress for iPhone app on my iPod and Windows Live Writer on Windows. These programs are much easier for stuff such as adding images than the web interface. Is there a similar program for Linux that works with self-hosted Wordpress blogs?

Dec 20, 2010I've just discovered the app TuneIn on my Android phone, it allows you to access radio stations that broadcast over the net, as well net-only ones, in an easy searchable interface (the 'backend' is the website radiotime.com).
Is there a way to do a similar thing on Opensuse? Currently I have a small list of stations in banshee which I had to manually add - a very painstaking manual process. Is there a plugin for banshee or another program that does this well?
Software :: Good System Recovery Live CD?
Jul 30, 2010I personally use System Rescue CD, but I need something to recommend to newbies with gui menus to mount local hard drives and such. It doesn't need to have much other than that. I've been out of the loop for a while and don't know what is currently available and good.

I just want to know what the best way is to save everything , as in settings and programs etc. , just in case there's some sort of major failure.
Any ghosting programs that will allow me to save the last known good configuration? or clone the entire drive?
Since I've been using Ubuntu I haven't run into any major screwups like with windows , but there are some times I've installed it and it took a while to get different things working. I don't want to have to go through the whole process again if there's ever a major malfunction.

Mar 29, 2011Here at work we've made very good use of Server 2003's Shadow Copy service, which lets me restore users' files quickly and easily using the Previous Versions software--yet takes minimal resources and storage space on the server. I've also heard that the service may be available to users in Windows 7. Is there an equivalent of this in Ubuntu? Something I could set up that would snapshot files on my hard drive every so often, and let me recover deleted files or earlier versions of files?

Jun 14, 2011Does Ubuntu have the equivalent of a Windows .exe self-installable file? If so, what is it called? I seem to remember installing LimeWire on Ubuntu a while back and the file I downloaded was self-installable. Is there a place where Ubuntu programs are available for download as packages that install themselves?Why are most programs for Linux not self-installable, like .exe installers in Windows? Is there a security advantage to most programs not being available for download a single automatic install file? It would be much easier for me to go to a program's website, download a single file that installs by itself, and be done with it.
Also, why is it that, unless you install a program in Ubuntu using synaptic package manager, the program cannot be uninstalled under GUI? I really love Ubuntu, but find that even having simple control over installing and uninstalling programs is a real pain. I would love to go to LibreOffice's website, download a single file for Ubuntu that would install the entire program, install it, and be done with it.
Ubuntu :: No Equivalent To Windows US International Keyboard Layout?
Oct 8, 2010The only thing I miss about Windows is the US International keyboard setting. Is there really no equivalent in Ubuntu?
The current Ubuntu US International keyboard setting is just not the same. "whodoesitwant" explained the difference last year [URL], and it has been asked about before [URL]. Does anyone know if there are plans to implement a Windows-like keyboard setting?
This may seem petty, but it's a real nuisance if you've learned to touch type in Windows. At the moment the best I can find in Ubuntu is the US International (AltGr dead keys) layout, but it's awkward and slow using the right-hand alt key.
Ubuntu :: Windows Equivalent - Logon Batch Scripts?
Sep 5, 2010I have a logon script set in the startup folder "All Users > Startup > logon.bat" and it nicely mounts network drives from a Windows Server 2003 computer. The script is as follows:

Very simple. Now what I need to know:
- What is a batch equivalent and what commands will I need?
- Where is/how do I use the equivalent to Startup folder
- Can I get it to mount in the Computer folder or will it be mounted through root ("/") or can I have it easily accessible (maybe the Desktop)?
- Is there a way I can get the equivalent to the Windows password vault (remember passwords for certain addresses) and;
- If not, can I get the script to request Username and Password from the user for the mapping?
- Can I write to the folders if the user has permissions to write (had trouble with smbmount doing this)

Now that Ubuntu 10.10 supports all my hardware out of the box,I'm planning on using that, but I'm looking for a good replacement for Windows Journal. I don't need compatibility with Windows, but I do need to be able to save and load the notes. Handwriting recognition isn't needed or really wanted, I just use it to draw graphs, formulas, and musical notation for various classes.I love Tomboy, if there's a version that supports touch, I'd love it, but really any app that allows me to draw sometimes and type sometimes and easily switch between the two.

Dec 1, 2010They have pictures and documents everywhere so I figured I would just backup their entire HDD onto my external one and let them go in and transfer them back off. I keep proper backups so this isn't how I normally do things. I have done similar things in the past with dieing HDD's and Knoppix but I have never had this issue. I burned a CD using the latest ISO and Ubuntu seen both the main HDD and my external. I just copied all the contents of the main HDD over to the external. All went well and I could browse and view all the files from the external HDD after the transfer using the live CD. Unfortunately I am having an issue seeing the external HDD in Windows. As soon as I hook the drive up - windows says I need to Format it(Which I won't do obviously). But if I boot the live CD I can still see and use the files. How do can I get windows to see the drive and files without destroying data?

When i boot the Live CD from USB, and then go to the installation, then when i get to the partition part, it does not detect windows at all. It says that i have no operating systems installed. Jan 25, 2011My laptop froze up this morning and required a forceful shutdown and since will not boot. it is a new drive in the machine and have to admit I had not tried my old Ubuntu partition since cloning the drive from my one I RMA'd to Western Digital. So I have downloaded 10.10 Desktop version and burnt to a DVD.
If I try and use Nautilus I can not view anything on the WinXP partition but I can access my NTFS Data drive and my old Ubuntu Studio partitions (which I can't boot although I see Grub options.)
If I go via Terminal I can get at least some access though. What Ubuntu is showing as the name looks suspiciously like a Windows serial number. Is it in fact what I registered my Windows with? Once I get into the Win partition I can view contents of C's root. Here I can view the boot.ini file (which all help on the internet I could find claimed had probably got corrupted) but it looks as it should. I can get into Program File and Documents and Settings so some of the drive seems to work (and I should be able to back up my settings, all Docs and data already live on another partition anyway.) But it will not access the WINDOWS folder. This means I can not try replacing stated missing files from WINDOWS/system32.
Is this because either part of WINDOWS has become corrupt? Or the Address Headers for it? Or is there something that locks off Ubuntu from accessing this that I need to change? Seems strange I get nothing at all listed for the WinXP drive on Nautilus but at least some access with Terminal. Is there a Check Disk type program within Ubuntu that can work on NTFS partitions? Last time I checked (fair few months ago now) there wasn't but here's hoping to progress.

Apr 6, 2011Two days ago my Windows 7 just crashed and it doesn't work any more. Using a computer in a Internet point a downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 Live and now I'm running it in my computer. I would like to install Ubuntu definitely on my computer but before I would like to find all my old file from Windows 7. In Places/Computer has only the File System and nothing else. In System/Administration/Disk Utility I can see my 320 GB hard Disk (ATA Samsung HM3200II) but I can't do anything in that. I tried to use the Ubuntu 10.10 live in other computer and this work perfectly, but in this one no. What can I do to right now?

Since I've been doing some sound stuff with my computer, I decided to try Ubuntu Studio. Anyway, I am at college and do not have any cds available to be able to burn the image on. Is there a way to install Ubuntu onto my current partition (yes, I want to back everything up and erase what is on this partition) without burning the .iso to a disk. I have a Ubuntu 10.04 live disk and a Windows 7 partition on my hard drive. Is this possible with what I have and can anyone give me instructions or link me to something showing how? (I googled for a bit, but must have been missing the magic keywords if it's out there.)

Jun 16, 2010I'm trying to set-up a dual-boot (Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04), but whenever I start the installation from a Live CD and get to the partition section it is showing that my hard-drive is has no operating system, when it in fact does. Has anyone else encountered this issue, when trying to set-up dual-booting on their system? And, if you have had this issue, what did you do to resolve it? I find it very strange, since I've never had a problem like this with any of the older releases.
