View 1 Replies View RelatedLets say I log in to bash, open a file in vi, then using alt-f2 I open a new terminal. After logging in I navigate to a second file and open that in vi. How can I CnP between these two files?
I found this from [URL]. I'm not familiar with this command shift-8-y-y. I follow the vimtutor and use virtual mode. I tried this sequence and was unsuccessful.
And, I read this about registers. I found a mention of using double_quote-p to 'put' or paste the register, but this does not work in a different file. The second file reported the register empty.
Alternatively, I read in the VIM docs, it is possible to open multiple files under split screens. This may be a course to a solution. The need I often encounter has me navigating in a different bash window to find a file, then wishing to copy between the two. Whereas, I imagine, a split VIM window useful for files in the same directory.

View 7 Replies View RelatedDoes Ubuntu have an equivalent to system restore like windows?
I just want to know what the best way is to save everything , as in settings and programs etc. , just in case there's some sort of major failure.
Any ghosting programs that will allow me to save the last known good configuration? or clone the entire drive?
Since I've been using Ubuntu I haven't run into any major screwups like with windows , but there are some times I've installed it and it took a while to get different things working. I don't want to have to go through the whole process again if there's ever a major malfunction.
Here at work we've made very good use of Server 2003's Shadow Copy service, which lets me restore users' files quickly and easily using the Previous Versions software--yet takes minimal resources and storage space on the server. I've also heard that the service may be available to users in Windows 7. Is there an equivalent of this in Ubuntu? Something I could set up that would snapshot files on my hard drive every so often, and let me recover deleted files or earlier versions of files?
View 1 Replies View RelatedDoes Ubuntu have the equivalent of a Windows .exe self-installable file? If so, what is it called? I seem to remember installing LimeWire on Ubuntu a while back and the file I downloaded was self-installable. Is there a place where Ubuntu programs are available for download as packages that install themselves?Why are most programs for Linux not self-installable, like .exe installers in Windows? Is there a security advantage to most programs not being available for download a single automatic install file? It would be much easier for me to go to a program's website, download a single file that installs by itself, and be done with it.
Also, why is it that, unless you install a program in Ubuntu using synaptic package manager, the program cannot be uninstalled under GUI? I really love Ubuntu, but find that even having simple control over installing and uninstalling programs is a real pain. I would love to go to LibreOffice's website, download a single file for Ubuntu that would install the entire program, install it, and be done with it.
Is there a good Windows Live Writer equivalent for Ubuntu, something that would let me post on my wordpress blogs in a more convenient way?
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe only thing I miss about Windows is the US International keyboard setting. Is there really no equivalent in Ubuntu?
The current Ubuntu US International keyboard setting is just not the same. "whodoesitwant" explained the difference last year [URL], and it has been asked about before [URL]. Does anyone know if there are plans to implement a Windows-like keyboard setting?
This may seem petty, but it's a real nuisance if you've learned to touch type in Windows. At the moment the best I can find in Ubuntu is the US International (AltGr dead keys) layout, but it's awkward and slow using the right-hand alt key.
I have a logon script set in the startup folder "All Users > Startup > logon.bat" and it nicely mounts network drives from a Windows Server 2003 computer. The script is as follows:
<logon.txt (.bat) attachment>
Very simple. Now what I need to know:
- What is a batch equivalent and what commands will I need?
- Where is/how do I use the equivalent to Startup folder
- Can I get it to mount in the Computer folder or will it be mounted through root ("/") or can I have it easily accessible (maybe the Desktop)?
- Is there a way I can get the equivalent to the Windows password vault (remember passwords for certain addresses) and;
- If not, can I get the script to request Username and Password from the user for the mapping?
- Can I write to the folders if the user has permissions to write (had trouble with smbmount doing this)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have to establish password SFTP between one Unix box and Windows in which certain files will be pushed from unix to windows server. Our client is insisting on using TurboFTP on Windows for ssh daemon to run. There are two components in TurboFTO- client and server.
1. I need help if I need to install both. As far as my knowledge with this software is considered, I dont think TurboFTP client to be running as the server componoent will itself run sshd.
2. Also, when I try to add server in TurboFTP server console, it provides me two options - local and remote server types. Local uses 3830 port by default and uses ip 127.0.0.1. If I use Remote server type which uses 3839 and I dont know what ip address to provide. I need help whether I shud go ahead with local server or remote server.
My doubt is if I consider local server type then whether my Unix box will be able to recognize if thie windows machine (which is also naving network specific ip address) has sshd running because windows has local server type enabled which uses 127.0.0.1.

View 2 Replies View RelatedUnder unix/linux, there is this extremely useful program screen: it's for bash, text-only, and I can detach a session, log out (the session is still running though), log in later (even from a different computer) and resume the session exactly as I left it. My question is, is there an equivalent to screen for X? So what I want to do is: work remotely with ssh -X in an X-session on a remote linux machine, log out, then later log in from a different computer again with ssh -X and then re-attach the X-session; practically resuming work from the moment when I logged out before. Is this possible?
