View 1 RepliesI just switched from Ubuntu to Fedora 13 because I was unable to get Ubuntu to connect to wireless networks. I tried everything suggested in help and forums, and kept getting "Bad Password" with WICD and Network Manager. Now, with Fedora...I still can't connect.
Problem #1: The guide says to "...make sure that the relevant wireless interface (usually eth0 or eth1) is controlled by NetworkManager," and that I do this via: System>Administration>Network
However, there is no Network option under System>Administration.
Problem #2: I open Network Manager, which displays a list of networks. I click on mine, configure it with WPA and the right password, and it fails to connect: "The network connection has been disconnected."
I am a first time Linux user - though I've Unix and Windows experience. So though I can follow your most tech instructions, I'll need some hand-holding.
Need help getting my wireless network to work on my newly installed Oracle Linux on Dell laptop.
Not sure what wireless card is installed, or it's mac address (though I can boot into windows and get that info, I don't want to - it'll be kind of a let down if I can't fix it all thru Linux).
Install has detected a Broadcom wired card, but not the wireless. Funny thing is that it detected the Bluetooth.
I have configured my PC to run a linux 2.6 kernel in VMware and have no problem loading the image and using the wired network adaptor and the basic functions. I am having trouble finding the wireless network however. My Box has an " Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6250 AGN " wireless network adaptor. From what I can tell, this is supported by this version of linux. I have the adaptor enabled, my image settings as bridged, and the wimax enabled in the removable devices (connected). When I run WiCD manager I get the error message " Could not connect to wicd's D-Bus interface "

It doesn't seem to be accepting the essid setting, and it's giving an error for the key setting. Also, I'm noticing an inconsistency in the wireless protocols. The AP claims that it's 802.11g with rates up to 54 Mb/s. But it should be 802.11n. It's an Apple Airport Extreme and the Radio Mode is set to Automatic and displays "802.11a/n-02.11b/g/n" on the Airport Utility. The interface also claims that it's 802.11g, though shows a rate of 300 Mb/s. It's a Belkin "Play" Wireless USB Adapter (F7D4101).
(Note: I'm using ndiswrapper and the WinXP drivers which were installed from the Belkin software.)

My USB wifi device is detected in YAST > Hardware and I am using the module it says Hardware is using. It doesn't seem to save the module under YAST> Network Settings> Network Card Setup. Is this tool broken or useless? It seems setting up WiFi should be easier than this. YAST should work shouldn't it?

The equipment I'm having a problem with is a little web-server that was purchased by my employer that has, quite suddenly, stopped functioning. I was changing the IP address within YaST, at which point the device offered to update itself, which I saw no harm in. Post-update, however, I was unable to so much as ping the device.
I tried "ifconfig eth0": "Error fetching interface information: Device not found." I went into network settings via YaST and found that there are two cards now listed as: RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller Both IP addresses are "Not configured". The information pane, for both cards, cites:
RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controllerBusID : 0000:02:00.0 Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details. The only difference in either of the cards is the BusID (0000:02:00.0 and 0000:03.00.0)
I can neither edit nor delete either of these cards. As I mentioned, I am a total Linux novice, and am at a total loss for what to do next, or even how to find critical information about the system itself. I know enough to check dmesg, but not enough to have any clue what to look for in the output.
I've installed the Ubuntu 10.04 Server onto a PPC G4 Mac just for the experience of setting up a server. During the installation process Ubuntu couldn't auto-configure my DHCP Network. I'm using the airport card on a wireless network. How can I manually configure the network once Ubuntu is installed.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was told by an experienced Linux user/IT professional that older Broadcom wireless cards had embedded code preventing access through non-Windows OS's. I was told that there were drivers that were basically "hacks" for skirting this issue. I've tried two different drivers and neither seems to be doing the trick. My current driver is the "Broadcom STA wireless driver".

i have got the driver loaded with the help of modprobe, still unable able to make it right. when i use system-config-network - wireless - no sign of RT2870.
I have a desktop and a laptop. I have Netgear WGR614v9 Wireless Router connected to my desktop. Since my Laptop is pretty old I also bought a Netger Wireless Adapter for the sme model. Now when I connect the Wireless Adapter I am unable to connect to Wi-fi. I am new to Linux, after googling I ran "lsusb" command and it showed Netgear Wireless adapter and its version. Also in GUI when I open File Browser it also shows the Adapter detected but I am unable to connet the same to my router. Also the blue light on the adapter is not glowing.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWe have several new DELL STUDIO-XPS machines pre-packaged with Win7 onto which we intend to load 10.3 the 2.6.22.5-31-default kernel as a dual boot.
The first test machine however is showing reluctance to reveal its NIC under SuSE. The card in question is a Broadcom Netlink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet with driver version 12.4.0.3 under Windows.
The error message I recieve under SuSE is "Unable to configure network card because kernel device is not present".
ifconfig confirms this showing only the loopback device.
The tg3.ko driver seems to be OK (although I am not sure how to interogate this file for its vesion?). It is listed under /sbin/lsmod and I have attempted a rmmod followed by an insmod but thsi seems to have no effect.
Talk on the net suggests Windows will not 'let go' of the card on a dual boot machine but this seems unlikely and I have attempted the various power down options without success.
I still cannot access to internet. May I know why?
Is it due to the Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A)
The step i did:
1) iwlist eth1 scanning
2) sudo iwconfig eth1 essid shabana key s:xxxxxx
3) invoke firefox ... cannot surf
Do I need to set dhclient? how should I set? DO I need to enable wpa_supplicant?

I recently installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and everything works fine except wi-fi card, of course. The problem is that after installation the system recognized the card (is was listed in network devices in Yast) but I was unable to enable it through network-manager applet. Though the device could make scanning through terminal (found article in docs but didn't fully understand wpa_gui). Then i was stupid enough to delete the device from Yast list to try to reinstall it. So the problem is that i simply can't do this cause i see no way to re-detect. That is the goal is to at least turn back to post-install system state and try to enable wifi card again.

I have installed Linux SuSE 10.3 on a PC (Lenovo Thinkstation A58). However, when I start the computer I get the following error message:
"No valid Host_ID or host-name found."
I then use YaST to set up the network. I get the following error message:
"Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device is not present."
The computer has Windows 7 installed and everything seems to work fine. The LED on the Ethernetplug is blinking when using Windows, but not when using Linux. I guess this means that there is no driver for the Ethernet card (Marvell Yukon 88E8057). I have not found any driver for the card and am considering buying a new one. Which PCI card works with SuSE Linux 10.3?
I installed 10.3 (after buying it a couple of years ago and letting sit on the shelf) and can't get it to configure my ethernet connection or my wireless card. Yast doesn't include a list of available cards, and the error I get in installation-network setup is that the kernel isn't present. The machine I'm installing this on is a Lenovo, in which there isn't a discrete ethernet card (it's in the motherboard), but my wireless card (a Cisco LINKSYS 802.11G) is a discrete card. Because I'm divorcing Microsoft for a number of valid reasons, I don't have Windows available on that box.
View 4 Replies View RelatedInstalled a TP-Link TG-3269 Gigabit card in a machine running OS 11.3 32 bit, when I go into Yast, Network Devices, Network to try configuring the card I get this errormsg: Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. Couldn't find any mention of the card in dmesg's output, (though the 8139 onboard card is in there) there is some stuff about pci host bridge but I don't know whether they would be relevant or not
The chip on the card says it's rtl8169sc but lspci lists it as being 00:07.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8369 (rev 10) Done some googling and there don't seem be any drivers for a Realtek 8639 and it returns no matches from a search on realtek's site, but there is a driver there for rtl8169sc chips, which I downloaded and installed, no errors when installing it Even after a reboot I still get the same error in Yast's Network Settings screen, lspci still lists it as 8369 and the device isn't listed at all if I run ifconfig
I'm using OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit on a Lenovo G560. I'm able to establish both wired and unwired connections without problems. Now I'm in a situation where I'd like to share my laptop's internet connection with other devices. My thought was to establish an ad-hoc network that another computer could connect to wirelessly in order to get into the Internet, because I've only got one ethernet jack.
First thought was to use Network Manager, since that manages all my connections. A left click on the Network Manager icon brings up a menu in which "Wireless 802.11, Create network connection..." is an option. If I click on that I see a list of all the networks available in the area, as well as all the networks I've set up in the past. Below that are two options: "New Ad-Hoc Network" and "Connect To Other Network With Wireless 802.11..."
"New Ad-Hoc Network" seems like the right option, but when I double click on it the window closes and nothing happens. No error message, nothing. Network Manager continues to run and my connection is unchanged. If I just left click on it and then click "Connect" at the bottom of the window, the same thing happens.
I did a fresh install,I also enable the networkmanager.after installation,my wireless unable to connect to my router . when I click to connect , it prompt for password then after that nothing happen.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI finally installed openSUSE along side ubuntu and xp in my ThinkPad EDGENow I am facing issue with toggling the wi-fi, I had no such problem in ubuntu.Seems like there is some issue in the thinkpad-acpi module.I use fn+F9 to toggle the wifi, which toggles both bluetooh and wifi, but on openSUSE it only toggles bluetooth.acpi_listen in ubuntu gives me the below result when I press fn+F9ibm/hotkey HKEY 00000080 00001005but in openSUSE its blank but bluetooth gets toggled. dmesg from ubuntu:
